南極へようこそ！

I'm headed to Antarctica, my number one travel bucket list destination, but the adventure of Antarctica begins long before you get there.

南極大陸は私のバケットリスト第1位の旅行先だが、南極大陸の冒険はそこに着くずっと前から始まっている。

First, you have to get to Ushuaia, Argentina.

まず、アルゼンチンのウシュアイアに行かなければならない。

It's definitely an adventure hub, there are a lot of really cool things you can do launching from this city, and it's known as the gateway to Antarctica.

南極への玄関口としても知られている。

In Ushuaia, I boarded the Seabourn Venture thanks to Seabourn, who's hosting me for this trip.

ウシュアイアでは、この旅で私を受け入れてくれるシーボーンのおかげで、シーボーン・ベンチャー号に乗り込んだ。

I've always heard that their Antarctic experiences are incredible.

彼らの南極体験はいつもすごいと聞いている。

But before you get to Antarctica, you have to between the southernmost tip of South America and the South Shetland Islands of Antarctica.

しかし南極大陸に行く前に、南米の最南端と南極のサウスシェトランド諸島の間を通らなければならない。

And it's known to have the roughest seas in the world.

And the stretch we're going to be crossing is nearly 600 miles.

We're about 13 hours into crossing the Drake Passage.

I think we hit it around 2 a.m. last night because I woke up to things in my room starting to slide back and forth.

昨夜は午前2時ごろにぶつかったと思う。部屋の物が前後に滑り始めて目が覚めたからだ。

But so far, so good.

From what I understand, we're having a really easy Drake crossing, so I've been able to enjoy it a little bit.

私の理解では、ドレークの横断は本当に簡単なので、少し楽しむことができた。

I was just out on the bow watching albatross soar around the ship, which is incredible.

私はちょうど船首に出て、アホウドリが船の周りを飛び回るのを見ていた。

These birds have wingspans up to 12 feet.

これらの鳥の翼の長さは最大12フィート（約1.5メートル）。

And for some reason, they like following the wake of the ship, so they're actually hanging around us, which is very cool.

After two days of sailing across the Drake Passage, seeing the Antarctic continent emerge on the horizon was so exciting.

And I was kind of surprised by how dramatic it was.

そして、あまりのドラマチックさにちょっと驚いた。

In some ways, it felt like we'd arrived at another planet.

And the expedition team wasted no time getting us out on shore.

そして探検隊は時間を無駄にすることなく、私たちを岸に送り出してくれた。

So the way this works is the ship hangs out offshore of a landing site, and then expedition leaders bring passengers to shore in zodiac boats.

船は上陸地点の沖合に停泊し、エクスペディション・リーダーがゾディアック・ボートで乗客を岸まで運ぶという仕組みだ。

And the tentative itinerary of the sailing is to travel along the Antarctic Peninsula, making shore landings every day dependent on weather conditions.

そして航海の暫定的な旅程は、南極半島に沿って進み、天候次第で毎日上陸するというものだ。

The thing I was most excited about for this trip was the wildlife, especially penguins, because Antarctica is home to some of the largest penguin colonies in the world.

南極大陸には世界最大級のペンギンのコロニーがあるからだ。

And it did not disappoint.

そしてその期待は裏切られなかった。

Every single shore landing had penguins.

どの上陸地にもペンギンがいた。

We saw all different types.

いろいろなタイプを見た。

We saw chinstrap penguins, which are named for the obvious.

私たちはアゴヒゲペンギンを見た。

We saw Adelie penguins.

アデリーペンギンを見た。

And then the most common penguin we saw was the Gentoo.

そして、私たちが最もよく見かけたペンギンはジェンツーだった。

And there were so many special moments.

特別な瞬間がたくさんあった。

Like one landing was at this incredible spot called Brown Bluff, where these snowy cliffs hung over a beach, and there were penguins everywhere.

ブラウン・ブラフと呼ばれる、雪に覆われた断崖絶壁が浜辺に迫っていて、そこらじゅうにペンギンがいた。

And this young Gentoo penguin was napping with a tuft of feathers in its beak.

そしてこの若いジェンツーペンギンは、くちばしに羽毛の房をくわえて昼寝をしていた。

I didn't realize penguins napped like this, and it's one of the most precious things I've ever seen.

ペンギンがこんな風に昼寝をするとは知らなかったし、今まで見た中で最も貴重なもののひとつだ。

We also saw lots of chicks, even some twins.

たくさんのヒナも見たし、双子のヒナもいた。

I was giddy getting this shot.

このショットが撮れて、私はめまいがした。

And do you see this?

これが見えるか？

This is a baby penguin butt with this little nubby tail.

これはペンギンのお尻の赤ちゃん。

I mean, it was all just magical.

つまり、すべてが魔法のようだった。

Something I didn't realize is that while adult penguins swim, it's important for babies to stay dry because their feathers aren't waterproof.

私は知らなかったのだが、大人のペンギンは泳ぐが、赤ちゃんのペンギンは羽毛に防水性がないため、濡れないようにすることが重要なのだ。

And that's one of the biggest survival challenges for parents, especially when they get an unusually wet season, because they not only need to find a dry place to build their nest, but once the baby is born, they need to keep it covered from rain and snow.

特に異常な雨季になると、巣を作るために乾燥した場所を探すだけでなく、赤ちゃんが生まれた後は雨や雪から巣を守る必要があるからだ。

Penguins are really social animals, and it's cutest they are as babies.

ペンギンは本当に社会的な動物で、赤ちゃんの時が一番かわいい。

They go through a really awkward phase growing up.

彼らは成長する過程で、本当に気まずい時期を経験する。

I mean, you think you had some bad looks in your teenage years?

Look at this guy.

And then you have this one whose parent is trying to groom it, and it's running away like, stop, you're embarrassing me.

They also create what's known as penguin highways, which are dedicated trails that you can see them all walking on in a line.

また、ペンギン・ハイウェイと呼ばれる、ペンギンが列をなして歩く専用の小道も作られている。

I just made it back to the ship.

今、船に戻ったところだ。

These landings are so amazing.

このような着陸はとても素晴らしい。

It is incredible to see so much wildlife in such a remote wilderness.

こんな人里離れた荒野で、これほど多くの野生動物を見ることができるなんて信じられない。

To protect all of this wildlife and the environment, there are a lot of rules we have to follow to be able to do these shore landings.

野生生物と環境を守るため、陸揚げを行うには多くのルールに従わなければならない。

We have to be really careful about what we wear and what we bring on shore.

服装や持ち物には本当に気をつけなければならない。

And once we're on land, we can't set anything down.

And before we go out, we walk through these disinfecting tubs.

And this is to make sure that we're not spreading disease from bird colony to bird colony or throughout the wildlife or the environment.

Very cool experience, and I'm just so happy to be here.

The most magical thing is happening right now.

We're sailing in this area where we're surrounded by giant icebergs and mountains, and it's snowing the lightest, fluffiest snowflakes, and we're surrounded by whales.

They're in every direction.

どの方向にもいる。

I couldn't have dreamed up a more beautiful setting.

これ以上美しい舞台はない。

With such incredible conditions around us, the expedition team prepared the zodiacs and got us out on the water.

そんな信じられないようなコンディションのなか、探検チームはゾディアックを用意し、私たちを海に連れ出した。

And this afternoon was probably my favorite of the entire trip.

そしてこの日の午後は、おそらくこの旅で一番のお気に入りだった。

We sat on this all around us.

私たちはその上に座っていた。

This was the most ethereal experience of my life.

これは私の人生で最も幽玄な体験だった。

The camera can't even do it justice.

カメラもそれを正当に評価できない。

So something very cool and unique about the Seabourn Venture is it has two custom expedition submarines, and guests can sign up to go on a submarine experience.

シーボーン・ベンチャーには2隻の特注の探検潜水艦があり、ゲストは申し込んで潜水艦体験をすることができる。

I didn't even realize technology was here yet, and these submarines can dive nearly a thousand feet, giving you the opportunity to see wildlife, plant life in depths of the ocean where very few humans have ever been.

この潜水艦は約1,000フィートまで潜ることができ、人類がほとんど到達したことのない深海で野生生物や植物を観察する機会を与えてくれる。

Another excursion available on this sailing is kayaking.

このセーリングでは、もうひとつのエクスカーションとしてカヤックが用意されている。

Early one morning, I went out with the expedition team to kayak among icebergs.

ある日の早朝、私は探検隊と一緒に氷山の間をカヤックで進んだ。

And before this trip, I'd never considered cold weather climates for kayaking, but it was such a cool experience.

そしてこの旅をするまでは、寒冷地でのカヤックなど考えたこともなかったが、とてもクールな体験だった。

Oh my gosh.

なんてことだ。

Look at that.

あれを見ろ。

So it's another beautiful day in Antarctica, and today we're doing something a little different.

今日も南極はいい天気だ。今日はちょっと変わったことをしよう。

We're stopping in Port La Croix, which has the world's southernmost post office.

世界最南端の郵便局があるポート・ラ・クロワに立ち寄る。

And apparently there's a little gift shop there where you can buy postcards and postage and mail letters.

そこには小さなギフトショップがあり、絵葉書や切手を買って手紙を出すことができるらしい。

Port La Croix is a former British military base, and it's also nicknamed the Penguin Post Office because it's home to a Gentoo penguin colony that has made the place their own.

ポート・ラ・クロワはかつてのイギリス軍基地で、ジェンツーペンギンのコロニーがあることから、ペンギン郵便局というニックネームもある。

I just loved seeing them all in front of this house with the red door.

赤いドアのあるこの家の前にいる彼ら全員を見るのが好きだった。

Some of the photos I got here felt like they could be a penguin family holiday card.

ペンギンの家族のホリデーカードになりそうな写真もあった。

This afternoon, we're sailing through the La Mer Channel, which is known to be absolutely beautiful because it's a very narrow channel with steep snowy cliffs on either side.

ラ・メール海峡は非常に狭い海峡で、両側には雪に覆われた険しい崖がある。

The La Mer Channel is nearly seven miles long.

ラ・メール海峡は全長7マイル近くある。

And as if it wasn't special enough on its own, a lone orca showed up and swam alongside the ship as we sailed through.

そして、それだけでも十分特別ではなかったかのように、一頭のシャチが現れ、私たちが航行しているときに船と並走して泳いでいった。

Something that's been so handy on this trip is the suites on the ship have drying closets, so when I get back from excursions, I can hang all of my wet stuff up in here, like my gloves and beanie, turn the radiator on here in the back, and everything gets so toasty and dry.

この旅でとても便利だったのは、船のスイートルームには乾燥クローゼットがあること。エクスカーションから戻ったら、手袋やビーニーなど濡れたものを全部ここに吊るして、奥にあるラジエーターのスイッチを入れると、すべてがとても暖かく乾くんだ。

The Seabourn Venture is a luxury expedition ship designed for diverse polar environments, and you can see this reflected throughout.

シーボーン・ベンチャー号は、多様な極地環境向けに設計された豪華な探検船であり、そのことが随所に反映されています。

The interior design is so beautiful.

インテリアデザインがとても美しい。

There are maps and explorer-themed touches all around the ship.

船内のあちこちに地図や探検家をテーマにした装飾が施されている。

There's the bow lounge that has screens with the ship's location.

船首ラウンジには、船の位置を示すスクリーンがある。

This is one of my favorite spots on the ship.

ここは船で一番好きな場所だ。

It's also a great place to watch for wildlife.

野生動物を観察するには絶好の場所でもある。

There are mudrooms where every passenger gets a personal locker to keep excursion boots and other gear.

泥部屋もあり、各乗客には個人用のロッカーが用意され、遠足用のブーツやその他の道具を保管することができる。

There's a gorgeous sauna, which was amazing for warming up after returning from shore.

豪華なサウナもあり、海岸から戻った後に体を温めるのに最高だった。

There are lots of heated whirlpools and a swimming pool, which are perfect for taking in the scenery while sailing.

温水ジャグジーやプールもたくさんあり、セーリング中に景色を眺めるのに最適だ。

And of course, there are so many restaurants and dining options to choose from.

もちろん、レストランや食事の選択肢もたくさんある。

I think my favorite was sushi in the club, but you will never go hungry on this ship, and the suites are super spacious with balconies, walk-in closets, and full-size bathrooms.

バルコニー、ウォークインクローゼット、フルサイズのバスルームを備えたスイートはとても広々としている。

Today in Antarctica, we are sailing into an active volcano.

今日、南極では活火山に向かって航行している。

We've made it to Deception Island, which is the caldera of the volcano.

火山のカルデラであるデセプション島に到着した。

I believe it last erupted in 1970, and they do monitor it to see how active it is, and apparently it's low risk right now.

最後に噴火したのは1970年だと思うが、どの程度活発かを監視している。

However, the ship has an emergency plan in place if the volcano erupts today.

しかし、今日火山が噴火した場合の緊急プランも用意している。

We're now headed back to Ushuaia, and I'm so happy to have had such a wonderful experience on this trip, and so sad it's coming to an end.

今、私たちはウシュアイアに向かっている。この旅で素晴らしい経験ができたことをとても嬉しく思うと同時に、この旅が終わってしまうことをとても寂しく思っている。
