句動詞についてのビデオです。

Now I've never made a video about phrasal verbs properly before.

さて、私はこれまで句動詞についてきちんとしたビデオを作ったことがなかった。

They are very important.

それらはとても重要だ。

When you learn English at school you probably don't realise that the spoken English language is very very different to what you learn in your lessons at school and grammar is not so important when you're trying to communicate and you realise how many of these phrasal verbs we actually use.

学校で英語を習うとき、話し言葉が学校の授業で習うものとはまったく違うことに気づかないだろうし、コミュニケーションをとろうとするとき、文法はそれほど重要ではない。

Now why do we use phrasal verbs?

さて、なぜ私たちは句動詞を使うのだろうか？

Well that's a very good question.

とてもいい質問だね。

It's been a slow kind of journey of them taking over.

彼らが支配するまでの道のりは、ゆっくりとしたものだった。

You see there's a phrasal verb taking over.

ほら、句動詞が引き継いでいる。

That means to dominate.

つまり、支配するということだ。

It's been a slow process of them sort of coming into the language.

彼らが言葉に入ってくるまでには時間がかかった。

Very often phrasal verbs just make everything easier.

句動詞を使うことで、すべてが簡単になることがよくある。

They require less words to make the same point.

同じことを言うのに、言葉は少なくてすむ。

I don't even want to think about how difficult it would be to say wake up if I didn't use the phrasal verb wake up.

もしwake upという句動詞を使わなかったら、wake upと言うのがどんなに難しいか考えたくもない。

But there was a time where we would have said arose or became awake or started the day.

しかし、私たちが起床を告げたり、目を覚ましたり、一日を始めたりした時期もあったはずだ。

I have no idea.

全く分からない。

Something like that.

そんな感じだ。

So I use hundreds of these things a day and I use them without even noticing.

だから、私は1日に何百ものものを使っているし、気づかないうちに使っている。

And so when my students don't use them and they use a formal word instead it really grates on me because I suddenly realise how informal and how kind of friendly and warm the language has become with these phrasal verbs.

だから、生徒たちが句動詞を使わず、代わりにフォーマルな言葉を使うと、私は本当に腹が立つんだ。

I really like them.

本当に気に入っている。

So instead of learning great big long lists of phrasal verbs I think it's much more effective to learn them by context.

だから、句動詞の大きな長いリストを覚えるのではなく、文脈から覚える方がずっと効果的だと思う。

And today I'm going to show you all of the phrasal verbs that you will need or that will come in handy for a typical day on the weekend.

そして今日は、週末の典型的な一日に必要な、あるいは便利な句動詞をすべて紹介しよう。

It's Saturday morning.

土曜日の朝だ。

The sun is pouring in to your bedroom.

あなたの寝室には太陽が降り注いでいる。

If you're an early bird you might just spring out of bed but if not you might fancy having a lie in.

早起きする人ならベッドから飛び出すかもしれないが、そうでない人は横になっているのが好きかもしれない。

Now to lie in is to sleep or lie in bed longer than usual.

今のlie inは、いつもより長く寝たり、ベッドに横になったりすることだ。

I love lying in particularly on Sundays, that is my special day of rest right?

日曜日は私の特別な休息日なんだ。

It is a day of rest Sunday so everyone should lie in.

日曜日は休息日だから、みんな横になるべきだ。

So when you eventually get up you start to get ready for the day.

そうしてやがて起きると、その日の準備を始める。

You pick out your favourite outfit for the day, put it on and then you put on other things like makeup, sun cream, perfume, jewellery, hair clips, hairspray, a hat, sunglasses and some shoes.

その日のお気に入りの服を選び、それを着て、化粧、日焼け止めクリーム、香水、アクセサリー、ヘアクリップ、ヘアスプレー、帽子、サングラス、靴などを身につける。

Then after a quick breakfast, or if you're anything like me you'll skip breakfast and just have coffee instead, you'll head out into the summer sunshine.

そして簡単な朝食を済ませたら、あるいは私のように朝食を省いて代わりにコーヒーを飲んだら、夏の日差しの中に出かける。

You head down the road towards the bus stop and you get on a bus.

バス停に向かい、バスに乗る。

You sit down on the top floor because it's a double-decker bus, my favourite kind of bus, and you put on your headphones and turn up your favourite music.

私の好きな2階建てバスなので、最上階に座り、ヘッドフォンをつけて好きな音楽をかける。

You look out the window and take in the sights as the bus drives through London and you just chill out for a bit.

バスがロンドンを走り抜ける間、窓の外を眺め、景色を眺め、そして少し冷静になる。

Now it's time to get off.

さあ、降りる時間だ。

You get off the bus and you make your way towards your favourite cafe, and when they ask you if your coffee is to have in or to have out or take away, you say take away please, and then you make your way slowly to the park.

バスを降り、お気に入りのカフェに向かい、コーヒーを店内で飲むかテイクアウトするか聞かれたら、テイクアウトでお願いしますと答え、ゆっくりと公園へと向かう。

You sit down on a rug in the park and spend a good couple of hours there.

公園の敷物の上に座り、そこで2、3時間を過ごす。

You whip out the novel that you're currently reading and you just sip your coffee and kick back.

今読んでいる小説を取り出し、コーヒーを飲みながらくつろぐ。

The sun comes out so you lie down and sunbathe for a little bit.

太陽が顔を出したので、横になって少し日光浴をする。

Everything is just truly wonderful in that moment and now it's time for you to go and meet your friend.

その瞬間はすべてが本当に素晴らしい。

You meet up with an old friend that you haven't seen in ages and you have lunch in an amazing new cafe that has just opened up in East London.

久しぶりに会った旧友と、イースト・ロンドンにオープンしたばかりの素晴らしいカフェでランチをする。

You've been meaning to try this cafe out for a while so you're really really excited to try what they have.

以前からこのカフェに行ってみたいと思っていた。

You sit down and you really catch up with your friend.

座って、友人と本当に仲良くなるんだ。

There's plenty to discuss.

議論することはたくさんある。

You order, of course, smashed avocado on toast.

注文はもちろん、アボカドトースト。

Typical London hipster.

典型的なロンドンのヒップスターだ。

I joke about it but it's the most delicious thing ever.

冗談で言っているんだけど、最高に美味しいんだ。

Smashed avocado, try it if you haven't.

アボカドを潰したもの。

You hang out with this friend for at least an hour and a half to two hours.

その友人とは少なくとも1時間半から2時間は一緒にいる。

People in London are so busy so you literally have to plan months in advance if you want to see a friend these days.

ロンドンの人々はとても忙しいので、最近は友人に会おうと思ったら、文字通り何カ月も前から計画を立てなければならない。

You say goodbye to your friend and then after lunch you wander around the shops for a bit and you're just quietly browsing the clothes in H&M when suddenly you bump into an old colleague from work.

友人に別れを告げ、ランチの後、少しショップをぶらつき、H&Mで静かに洋服を見ていると、突然、昔の職場の同僚にばったり会った。

This happens so often in London I don't even know how.

ロンドンではよくあることだ。

It's such a big city yet I always bump into someone I know when I go into H&M.

こんなに大きな街なのに、H&Mに行くといつも知り合いにばったり会う。

And you catch up briefly, have a bit of small talk and then you go on your way.

そして、少し世間話をして、自分の道を行く。

You decide to head home but then you come across a really cool Japanese supermarket.

あなたは家に帰ろうと決めたが、そこでとてもクールな日本のスーパーマーケットに出くわした。

That's the great thing about London, you're just walking along and you can just suddenly come across or find an amazing shop that you were not expecting to find.

それがロンドンの素晴らしいところで、ただ歩いているだけなのに、突然、思ってもみなかったような素晴らしいお店に出くわしたり、見つけたりすることがあるんだ。

There's just so many hidden gems in London.

ロンドンには隠れた名所がたくさんある。

You decide to pick up some things from the Japanese shop for dinner because you're eating in that night so you may as well have something interesting.

せっかくだから何か面白いものを食べよう。

Oh no!

そんな！

You realise your phone battery is running out but that's okay you can just buy a magazine to flip through on the bus.

携帯電話のバッテリーが切れていることに気づくが、バスの中でパラパラと読む雑誌を買えばいい。

A much better use of time than scrolling through Instagram I think.

インスタグラムをスクロールしているよりずっといい時間の使い方だと思う。

You get home and you decide to put your feet up because you've done a jazz music vinyl and you just chill out for a second and then you pour yourself a glass of white wine.

家に帰ったら、ジャズのレコードを聴いたから足を置こうと思って、ちょっと冷静になって、それから白ワインをグラスに注ぐ。

You turn down the lights just to create a bit of atmosphere, some ambience.

雰囲気を出すために照明を落とす。

After dinner you decide to turn in and get an early night.

夕食後、あなたは早寝することにした。

It has been a lovely, calm, relaxing day.

穏やかでリラックスした素敵な一日だった。

You do some yoga before bed to properly relax and then read a bit more of your novel and then you turn the world.

寝る前にヨガをして体をほぐし、小説をもう少し読んでから世界を変える。

So that was literally my day about three weeks ago and I don't go to London very often anymore because I don't live there and so when I do go I have such a great time and I just love it.

ロンドンに住んでいないので、ロンドンに行くことはもうあまりない。

Pronunciation tips.

発音のコツ

Okay let me give you some tips for how to pronounce phrasal verbs.

では、句動詞の発音のコツを教えよう。

The most the preposition together and that again you guessed it is to make it easier to say.

最も前置詞が一緒になっているのは、言いやすくするためです。

We're really just quite lazy aren't we?

僕らは本当に怠け者なんだね。

We just want everything smooth easy to say.

私たちはただ、何でもスムーズに簡単に言いたいだけなのだ。

Anyway this is really easy when the verb ends with a consonant and the preposition starts with a vowel which is obviously very very often.

とにかく、動詞が子音で終わり、前置詞が母音で始まる場合、これは本当に簡単だ。

Let me show you what I mean.

どういうことか、お見せしよう。

For the phrasal verbs with turn we've got turn off turn off it becomes one word.

turnを使った句動詞では、turn off turn offがあり、これは1つの単語になる。

Don't say turn off turn off it's not as natural.

電源を切るなんて言わないで......自然じゃない。

We want this to sound really natural because if you're going to use phrasal verbs you may as well sound natural because that's the whole point of using them.

もし句動詞を使うのであれば、自然に聞こえるようにしたい。

Similarly in turn in we've got turn and the phrasal verbs with get we've got get up get up not get up it's get up and get on get on the bus get on sounds like a completely different word doesn't it when you think of it like that.

同様に、turnにはturn、getにはget upという句動詞がある。

So yes just remember to blend them together.

だから、そうだね。
