I'll start with something familiar.

身近なものから始めよう。

Piece of cake.

Huh.

I don't know if you knew, but POC English stands for piece of cake English.

ご存知かどうかわかりませんが、POCイングリッシュはピース・オブ・ケーキ・イングリッシュの略です。

But what does piece of cake mean?

でも、ピース・オブ・ケーキってどういう意味？

Piece of cake means something that is very easy to do.

ピース・オブ・ケーキ（Piece of cake）とは、とても簡単なことを意味する。

And with POC English, learning English is easy.

そしてPOCイングリッシュを使えば、英語学習は簡単だ。

That's the whole idea of POC.

それがPOCの考え方だ。

For example, don't worry about the test, it'll be a piece of cake.

例えば、テストのことは心配しなくていい。

Don't worry, it'll be a piece of cake.

心配しないで、楽勝だよ。

It'll be very easy.

とても簡単だよ。

Second one is break a leg.

2つ目は足を骨折すること。

Well, no, don't break any legs.

いや、足を折るなよ。

Break a leg doesn't mean to fight or to kill someone or no, no, no.

足を折るというのは、戦うとか、人を殺すとか、そういう意味ではない。

Break a leg means good luck.

足を折ることは幸運を意味する。

Usually before a performance or an exam or a test or an audition, you have your big presentation today, right?

通常、公演や試験、テスト、オーディションの前には、今日、大きなプレゼンテーションがあるよね？

Break a leg.

足を折る。

It means good luck with the presentation.

プレゼンテーションの成功を祈るという意味だ。

What am I doing?

私は何をしているんだ？

I'm hitting the nail on the head.

私は正鵠を射ている。

To hit the nail on the head?

正鵠を射ているか？

What does that mean?

どういう意味ですか？

It means to describe exactly what is causing a problem or a difficult situation.

問題や困難な状況を引き起こしている原因を正確に説明することを意味する。

To be very accurate at identifying the cause of a problem.

問題の原因を非常に正確に特定すること。

To hit the nail on the head.

正鵠を射ている。

You hit the nail on the head when you said that the company needs a new financial strategy.

新しい財務戦略が必要だ、というあなたの言葉は正鵠を射ている。

It means you clearly identified the problem.

つまり、問題を明確に特定したということだ。

You hit the nail on the head.

正鵠を射ている。

I let the cat out of the bag.

私は袋から猫を出した。

Let the cat out of the bag?

猫を袋から出す？

That means open the bag and let the cat out?

つまり、袋を開けて猫を出すということか？

No, it means to accidentally reveal a secret.

いや、うっかり秘密を漏らしてしまうという意味だ。

You're not supposed to tell anyone, but you accidentally say it and you let the cat out of the bag.

誰にも言ってはいけないことなのに、うっかり言ってしまって猫を出してしまった。

For example, I let the cat out of the bag about their surprise party.

例えば、サプライズ・パーティーのことをバラしてしまった。

I let the cat out of the bag.

私は袋から猫を出した。

I revealed the secret by accident.

私は偶然、その秘密を明かしてしまった。

It was not my fault.

私のせいではない。

I bought this tennis racket last week and it cost me an arm and a leg.

先週、このテニスラケットを買った。

Cost me an arm and a leg?

手も足も出ない？

Yeah, that means I paid for it with my arm and with my leg.

そう、つまり、腕と足で払ったということだ。

No, if something costs you an arm and a leg, that thing is very expensive.

いや、手も足も出ないような代物なら、それはとても高価なものだ。

It's another way of saying I was ripped off or that it was too expensive.

別の言い方をすれば、ぼったくられたとか、高すぎたということだ。

That car costs an arm and a leg.

あのクルマは高いよ。

I cannot afford it.

I'm feeling a bit under the weather today.

今日はちょっと調子が悪いんだ。

Under the weather?

天候不順？

What does that mean?

どういう意味ですか？

That means I'm a bit sick.

つまり、私は少し病んでいるということだ。

If somebody is under the weather or is a bit under the weather, they are a bit unwell.

天気が悪かったり、ちょっと具合が悪かったりする人は、ちょっと具合が悪いんだ。

They're feeling a bit sick.

彼らは少し気分が悪いようだ。

I'm feeling a bit under the weather today, so I might stay in.

今日はちょっと調子が悪いから、家にこもってようかな。

Idiom number seven, to bite the bullet.

慣用句その7。

Bullet is something that comes out of a gun.

弾丸は銃から出るもの。

And then you get it and then...

そして、それを手に入れ、そして...。

Bite the bullet.

弾丸を食らえ。

What does that mean?

どういう意味ですか？

Bite the bullet means to force yourself to do something unpleasant.

Bite the bulletとは、不愉快なことを無理に引き受けるという意味だ。

To do something that you do not like, but is necessary.

好きではないが必要なことをすること。

For example, if you have an exam and you don't like studying for it, what else can you do?

例えば、試験があって、そのための勉強が嫌いだとしたら、他に何ができる？

Nothing.

何もない。

Bite the bullet.

弾丸を食らえ。

Do it.

やるんだ。

Force yourself because it's necessary.

必要なことだから強要する。

I don't really want to exercise today, but I think I'll just have to bite the bullet.

今日は運動したくないんだけど、我慢するしかないかな。

I don't want to exercise, but I have to bite the bullet.

運動はしたくないけど、我慢するしかない。

It means I have to do it.

私がやらなければならないということだ。

I have to force myself.

Have you ever heard the phrase best of both worlds?

両世界のベスト・オブ・ベストという言葉を聞いたことがあるだろうか？

Best of both worlds.

両方の長所を兼ね備えている。

What does it mean?

どういう意味ですか？

Both worlds?

両方の世界？

The best of both worlds is a situation in which someone has two different things to enjoy.

両方の世界のベストは、誰かが2つの異なるものを楽しむことができる状況である。

And these two different things are totally different.

そして、この2つの異なるものはまったく異なるものだ。

For example, you have a part-time job that pays really well and you study at a university.

例えば、高収入のアルバイトをしながら、大学で勉強しているとします。

You have best of both worlds.

両方の長所を兼ね備えている。

You work and earn an income.

あなたは働いて収入を得ている。

And at the same time, you're a student and improving your knowledge.

You have two different situations, but you're enjoying both.

Next idiom, speak of the devil.

What does it mean?

どういう意味ですか？

Imagine you're talking to a friend about another friend whose name is Jack.

ジャックという名前の別の友人について友人と話しているとしよう。

And you say, yeah, you know what?

そして、君はこう言うんだ。

I talked to Jack yesterday.

昨日、ジャックと話したんだ。

And all of a sudden, Jack comes in.

そして突然、ジャックがやってきた。

And you're like, yeah, and Jack told me, oh, speak of the devil.

そうしたらジャックは、ああ、噂をすればって言ったんだ。

Here he comes.

来たぞ。

Speak of the devil is used when you're talking to someone about someone else.

Speak of the devilは、誰かに誰かについて話しているときに使う。

And that person appears out of nowhere.

そして、その人物はどこからともなく現れる。

Hi, John, speak of the devil.

やあ、ジョン。

We were just talking about you.

ちょうど君の話をしていたところだ。

Next idiom, when pigs fly.

次の慣用句、豚が飛ぶとき。

Can pigs fly?

豚は飛べるのか？

Do they have wings?

羽はありますか？

What does it mean when pigs fly?

豚が飛ぶとはどういうことか？

That means never.

つまり、決してということだ。

We use this idiom to talk about something that can never happen when pigs fly.

この慣用句は、豚が飛ぶときには決して起こりえないことについて話すときに使う。

Sorry, boss, can I get a promotion?

すみません、ボス、昇進させてもらえませんか？

You can have a promotion when pigs fly.

豚が飛べば昇進できる。

That means you can never get a promotion.

つまり、昇進はあり得ないということだ。

Well, yeah, my boss is not the best person.

まあ、そうだね、僕の上司は最高の人間じゃないからね。

Next idiom, let's cut to the chase.

次のイディオム、本題に入ろう。

Cut to the chase?

本題に入る？

Cut to the chase means to get to the point without wasting time.

Cut to the chase（本題に入る）とは、時間を無駄にすることなく本題に入るという意味である。

We don't have much time, so please cut to the chase.

あまり時間がないので、本題に入ってください。

That means please get to the main point.

つまり、本題に入ってください。

We don't have much time.

あまり時間がないんだ。

Cut to the chase.

本題に入ろう。

Come on.

さあ、行こう。

Next one is pretty self-explanatory.

次は自明のことだ。

To add fuel to the fire.

火に油を注ぐことになる。

So imagine there is a fire and you have some gas and you add fuel to the fire.

つまり、火事があって、ガスがあり、火に燃料を加えたとする。

What will happen to the fire when you add fuel to it?

火に燃料を加えたらどうなるのか？

Add fuel to the fire means to make a bad situation worse.

火に油を注ぐとは、悪い状況をさらに悪化させることを意味する。

The situation is already bad and you add fuel to the fire.

状況はすでに悪いのに、火に油を注ぐようなものだ。

That means you make it even worse.

つまり、さらに悪化させるということだ。

Don't argue back.

言い返してはいけない。

You will just add fuel to the fire.

火に油を注ぐだけだ。

Don't argue back.

言い返してはいけない。

Means the situation is already bad.

状況はすでに悪いということだ。

Don't argue.

Just go home.

Speaking of go, go the extra mile.

ゴーといえば、余分なマイルを走れ。

What does that mean?

どういう意味ですか？

For example, you wanted to walk for 10 miles.

例えば、10マイル歩きたいとする。

Now walk for 11 miles.

今度は11マイル歩く。

Go the extra mile, right?

余分な距離を走るんだろ？

No.

いや。

Go the extra mile means to go beyond what is expected of you.

ゴー・ザ・エクストラ・マイル（Go the extra mile）とは、期待されている以上のことをする、という意味である。

To do more than necessary.

必要以上のことをすること。

For example, your boss expects you to be nice to the customer and make one phone call.

例えば、上司があなたに、顧客に親切にし、電話を1本かけることを期待しているとする。

But you make a phone call and you email the customer as well and you text them too.

でも、電話もするし、メールもするし、テキストも送る。

You're going the extra mile.

あなたは余計なことをしている。

You're doing things which are not expected but are good things to be done.

あなたは期待されていないことをやっているが、それは良いことだ。

She always goes the extra mile to ensure that the clients are happy.

Idiom 14.

Out of the blue.

青天の霹靂だ。

Out of the blue?

青天の霹靂？

What does that mean?

どういう意味ですか？

If something happens out of the blue, it happens unexpectedly.

青天の霹靂とは、予期せぬことが起こることだ。

You didn't expect that and it happened out of the blue.

予想もしていなかったし、突然の出来事だった。

I hadn't talked to him in years, but out of the blue, I received a letter from him.

もう何年も話をしていなかったが、突然彼から手紙が届いた。

I received a letter out of the blue.

私は突然手紙を受け取った。

I wasn't expecting that letter.

あの手紙は予想外だった。
