It's never a nice situation.

決していい状況ではないでしょう。

When that happens, you need to tell your boss or tell your teacher why you're late.

You need to give them an excuse.

You need to give them a reason for being late.

In this English lesson, I'll teach you about ten common reasons why people are late and what you say in English when you're in that situation.

If you drive to work or if you drive to school, sometimes there's a lot of other cars and trucks on the road, and traffic slows down and it makes you late.

車で通勤や通学していると、他の車やトラックがたくさん走っていて、交通量が減って遅刻してしまうことがありますね。

If you were in that situation, you would say to your boss or say to your teacher, "I was stuck in traffic."

そんな時、あなたは上司に、あるいは先生に「渋滞に巻き込まれた」と言うでしょう。

Or you might just say, "Traffic."

あるいは、「渋滞」だけ言うかもしれません。

"Why were you late, Bob?" -"Traffic."

「なぜ遅れた、ボブ？」-「渋滞です。」

"Traffic was awful."

「渋滞がひどかったです。」

Or you might say a sentence like this.

あるいは、こんなことを言うかもしれません。

You might say, "I was in a traffic jam."

渋滞に巻き込まれました。

A traffic jam is when traffic actually stops on the road and you can't make any progress.

「traffic jam」とは、実際に道路で交通が止まってしまい、何も進めなくなることです。

So if you're late for work because there were a lot of other vehicles on the road driving very slowly, you might say, "I was stuck in traffic."

You might just say, "Traffic."

「渋滞」と言うかもしれません。

Or you might say, "I was in a traffic jam."

Maybe you don't have your own vehicle.

自分の車を持っていないのかもしれません。

Maybe you take the bus or you take the train to work or school.

バスか電車で通勤・通学しているのでは？

And sometimes when you are running late, you miss the bus or you miss the train.

バスに乗り遅れたり、電車に乗り遅れたりすることもありますね。

And that's exactly the excuse you would give.

それこそあなたが使う言い訳でしょう。

When you arrived at work or when you arrived at school, you would say, "I'm late because I missed my bus."

仕事に着いたとき、または学校に着いたとき、「バスに乗り遅れたから遅れました」と言うことになります。

Or "I'm late because I missed my train."

「電車に乗り遅れました。」

Maybe you just didn't get to the bus stop or to the train station on time and you saw your bus pulling away or your train pulling away and you had to take the next one.

もしかしたらバス停や駅に間に合わず、バスが発車したり、電車が発車したりして、次の乗り物に乗らなければなりませんでした。

So then when you get to work or when you get to school, you would say, "Hey, sorry, I missed my bus."

Or, "Hey, sorry, I missed my train."

あるいは、「すみません、電車に乗り遅れました。」

In order to be somewhere on time in the morning, you need to get up on time.

朝、時間通りにどこかに行くためには、時間通りに起きる必要があります。

And there's a number of different things that can happen to you in the morning where you don't get up on time.

朝、時間通りに起きられないと、いろいろなことが起こりますね。

Here's a few things you might have to explain to your boss or your teacher.

上司や先生に説明しなければならないことがいくつかあります。

You might simply say, "I slept in."

単純に「寝坊しました」とでも言うかもしれません。

You might say, "I overslept."

「寝過ごしてしまいました」と言うかもしれません。

That's the same as sleeping in.

You might say, my alarm didn't go off.

Or my alarm clock didn't go off.

Or you might say, "Sorry, I forgot to set my alarm."

So there's a variety of reasons why you might be late in the morning related to when you got out of bed.

朝遅れる理由は、起床時間に関連するさまざまな理由があります。

And those are four different ways you could describe whatever happened to you.

Sometimes you're late because you had to go back home because you forgot something.

Sometimes you rush out the door, and then you get to your car, or you get to the bus stop, and you realize that you forgot something important, and then you have to go back and get it.

And so when you finally do arrive at work or school, you might say, "Sorry, I forgot my keys and I had to go back home and get them."

Or "Sorry I forgot my wallet and I had to run back home to grab my wallet."

So I'm not sure if you're a forgetful person.

忘れっぽい人なのかな？

I am sometimes a forgetful person, and sometimes I'm a little bit late for work because I forget something important.

忘れっぽい性格で、大事なことを忘れて仕事に少し遅刻することもあります。

Usually it's my phone or sometimes even my wedding ring or Fitbit, and I quickly turn around and go home and get it.

普段はスマホか、時には結婚指輪や Fitbit を忘れることもあり、すぐに家に取りに帰ります。

So sometimes you're late because you simply forgot something.

忘れ物で遅刻することもあるんですね。

So if you are someone that drives a car to work or school, there's more than just traffic jams that can cause problems for you.

もしあなたが通勤や通学に車を使う人なら、渋滞以外にも困ることがあるんですね。

Sometimes you have car problems.

車のトラブルもあるんですね。

And so when you get to work or school, you might have to say something like this: "Sorry I'm late, my car wouldn't start this morning."

そして、職場や学校に着くと、こんな風に言わなければならないかもしれません。「遅刻してすみません、今朝は車のエンジンが 掛からなくて…」

Maybe you turned the key and the engine just wouldn't turn on.

鍵を回してもエンジンがかからなかったのかもしれませんね。

You might say, "Sorry I ran out of gas on the way to work."

「仕事中にガス欠になっちゃって」って言うかもしれません。

Or "Sorry my car broke down on the way to work."

「出勤途中に車が故障してしまってすみません」とか。

Or "Sorry my car got a flat tire on the way to work."

または、「通勤途中に車がパンクしてしまってすみません。」

So cars are usually reliable, but sometimes they aren't.

普通、車は信頼できるものですが、そうでないこともありますね。

And sometimes it makes you late.

そのせいで遅刻することもあります。

Another thing that can make you late is simply the weather.

もう一つ、遅刻の原因になるのは単純に天候です。

Especially here in Canada sometimes in the winter, the weather is really bad.

特にカナダは冬になると天気が悪くなるんです。

And so you might have to give excuses like the following:

というような言い訳をしなければならないかもしれません：

You might just say something like, "Sorry I'm late, the roads were really bad."

「道が悪くて遅れました 」とでも言えばいいでしょう。

This would mean there was a lot of snow and ice on the roads, and they were kind of slippery.

道路に雪や氷がたくさんあって、滑りやすかったということです。

You might just say, "Sorry I'm late, the roads were treacherous."

「遅刻してすみません、道路が危険で」とでも言えます。

Or, "Sorry I'm late, the weather was really bad."

「天気が悪くて遅くなってすみません」とか。

And this doesn't have to just relate to driving.

これは運転に限ったことではありません。

I'm sure there are times where it's raining so hard, it's very difficult just to walk across the city.

きっと雨がひどく降っている時、街を歩くのも大変なことがあると思います。

Maybe your umbrella keeps blowing and trying to escape from your hand, and that just makes you late for work.

傘が風で吹き飛ばされてしまい、そのせいで仕事に遅れてしまうことがあります。

So sometimes when you're late, it's because of the weather.

天候のせいで遅刻することもあるんですね。

And those are some of the excuses you could give.

そういう言い訳もあります。

Another reason you might be late for work is simply because you were doing something illegal, not anything major.

仕事に遅れる別の理由として、たんなる小さな違法行為をしていたため、かもしれません。

Maybe you were just speeding.

スピード違反とか。

If you are driving to work and the cops pull you over, you might get a speeding ticket.

通勤中にスピード違反で捕まるかもしれません。

And then when you get to work, you might have to tell your boss or you might have to tell your teacher if you're late for school, why you are late.

仕事に到着したら、上司に理由を説明しなければならないか、学校に遅れた場合は先生に理由を説明しなければならないことがあります。

So you would say, "Sorry I got pulled over" or "Sorry I got a speeding ticket."

だから、「警察に止められたから遅れました」「スピード違反で切符を切られたから遅れました」って言うんです。

or "Sorry I got a ticket on the way to work."

「通勤途中に切符を切られてすみません。」

I'm sure then your boss or teacher will be curious as to what exactly happened, but this could be another reason for being late.

上司や先生は何があったのか知りたがると思いますが、これも遅刻の理由の一つかもしれませんね。

Maybe you were speeding and the cops pulled you over and you got a speeding ticket.

もしかしたらスピードを出していて警察に止められ、スピード違反の切符を切られたかもしれません。

This next situation is one that has actually happened to me, and it's when a road or street that you normally take on your way to work or school is closed.

次のシチュエーションは、実際に私の身の回りで起こったことです。通勤や通学でいつも通る道や道路が閉鎖されている場合です。

There was a time a few years ago where I was driving to work and the road I normally take all of the sudden was closed and I had to go a different way.

数年前、車で通勤していたとき、いつも通っている道が突然閉鎖され、別の道を通らなければならなくなったことがありました。

So if this was to happen to you when you arrive at work or school, you would say, "Sorry I'm late, the road was closed."

もし、このようなことが職場や学校に到着したときに起こったとしたら、「道が閉鎖されていたので遅れてすみません」と言うでしょう。

Or, "Sorry I'm late, Smith street was closed."

あるいは、「遅れてすみません、スミス通りが閉鎖されていました」と言うでしょう。

Or you might even just say, "The road I normally take was closed. I had to take a detour."

あるいは、「いつも通る道が閉鎖されていました。迂回しなければならなかったんです。」

A detour is a situation where you have to take a different road or street in order to get somewhere.

「detour」とは、どこかに行くために別の道や通りを通らなければならない状況のことです。

So sometimes things are outside of your control.

自分の力ではどうにもならないこともあるわけです。

Sometimes a road or street is closed and that makes you late.

道路が閉鎖されて遅刻することもあります。

So earlier I talked about how sometimes you're late because you forget something and you have to go back and get it.

さっき、忘れ物をして取りに戻るために遅刻することがあると話しましたが、それはどういうことなんですか？

But sometimes you're also late because you can't find something in the morning.

でも、朝、忘れ物が見つからなくて遅刻することもありますね。

Sometimes you're on your way out the door and you can't find your keys or you can't find your wallet, or you can't find your phone.

時々、出かけようとしているときに、鍵や財布、または携帯電話が見つからないことがあります。

So then when you get to the place where you're going, you might have to give an excuse and you might say something like this: "Sorry I'm late, I couldn't find my keys."

行き先に到着したら、遅れた理由として「すみません、鍵が見つからなくて遅れました」と言うことがあります。

"Sorry I'm late, I couldn't find my phone."

「遅刻してすみません。スマホが見つからなくて。」

"Sorry I'm late, I couldn't find my wallet."

「遅刻してすみません。財布が見つからなくて。」

Hopefully it was just one of those things.

その中の一つだけだといいですけどね。

It's a really bad day when you can't find all three.

3 つとも見つからなかったら最悪だな。

But anyways, sometimes you're late because as you're trying to leave, you simply can't find something important that you need to take with you.

とにかく、時々出かけようとするときに、必要な重要なものが見つからずに遅れることがあるんです。

So hopefully this next one has never happened to you and will never happen to you.

だから、次にこれがあなたには起こらないことを願います。

But sometimes you get in a car accident.

交通事故に遭うこともあります。

Sometimes you're driving to work or school and you accidentally bump into someone or maybe someone hits you.

通勤や通学でぶつかったり、ぶつけられたりすることもあります。

And then of course you're going to be late for work or school.

そうなると当然、仕事や学校に遅刻することになります。

When you arrive, you would just simply say this: "Sorry I'm late, I was in a car accident."

到着したら、こう言うんです： 「遅れてすみません、交通事故に遭いまして。」

Or you might say, "Sorry I'm late, I had a car accident."

あるいは、「遅れてすみません、交通事故に遭ったんです。」

Those are, for me at least, the two most common ways you would describe that situation.

少なくとも私にとっては、この 2 つがその状況を説明する最も一般的な方法です。

So again, hopefully this never happens to you, but sometimes when you get to work or school, you have to say, "Sorry I'm late, I was in a car accident or I had a car accident."
