But why? Why do we even celebrate Valentine's Day?

しかし、なぜバレンタインデーを祝うのだろうか？

ズームインすると、バレンタインデーの起源に光を当てる話がいくつも出てくる。

There are quite a few stories shedding light on the origin of Valentine's day.

One of which takes us back to the 3rd century Rome, which was going through a lot of religious turmoil as many Romans were converting to Christianity.

そのひとつは、宗教的な混乱が続いていた3世紀のローマに遡る。多くのローマ人がキリスト教に改宗していた。

This didn't go well with the Pagan Emperor Claudius II, who was a strict ruler and wanted to stop it.

異教徒であったクラウディウス皇帝も、厳格な支配者であったため、これを止めさせようとした。

Plus, there was one priest who attracted much disfavor from the pagan emperor for helping fellow Christians.

さらに、仲間のキリスト教徒を助けたことで、異教徒である皇帝の恨みを買った司祭もいた。

And it was Saint Valentine.

そして聖バレンタインだった。

That's because he lived in a time when the Roman Empire was in danger and faced threats from inside and outside the borders.

それは、彼がローマ帝国が危機に瀕し、国境の内外からの脅威に直面していた時代に生きていたからであり、ローマ帝国を効果的に防衛する上でローマ軍が無力であったために起こり得たあらゆるおふざけについてである。

And of all the goofiness that could have been possible for the inability of the Roman army in defending the empire effectively, there was one that stood out to the emperor particularly.

He was of the opinion that marriages were causing distractions among the soldiers.

特に、結婚が兵士たちの気を散らしているという意見を持っていた。

So he derived the decision to ban the soldiers from getting married, as it was making them weak and straying from the path of battling for the empire.

そこで彼は、兵士たちの結婚が彼らを弱くし、帝国のために戦う道から迷い込ませるとして、結婚を禁止する決断を下した。

The ban on marriage came as a shock to the people, and it left them in emotional distress.

結婚の禁止は人々にショックを与え、精神的苦痛を与えた。

It is then, Saint Valentine decided that by the powers bestowed on him, he would secretly help the soldiers to tie the knot and began performing ceremonies in the church.

そうだ。そこで聖バレンタインは、自分に授けられた力によって、兵士たちの縁結びを密かに助けることを決意し、教会で儀式を執り行い始めた。

Due to this act of love, Saint Valentine became the angel who helped the emotionally distressed.

He also handed out heart-shaped parchment to remind these men of their vows and God's love.

彼はまた、ハートの形をした羊皮紙を配り、彼らの誓いと神の愛を思い出させた。

Everything seemed to go well, but only for a while.

すべてがうまくいっているように見えたが、しばらくの間だけだった。

It was not long before the knowledge of this secretive mission went into the wrong places and was reported to Emperor Claudius II.

This annoyed the emperor so much that in his outrage, he ordered Saint Valentine to be arrested and locked him up in a dungeon.

But this was just the beginning of another story for Saint Valentine.

Yes, in jail, in which the saint was kept, had a jailer named Asterius who noticed Valentine talking and helping the people around him in the dungeon.

そう、聖人が入れられていた牢獄にはアステリウスという看守がいて、ヴァレンタインが牢獄の中で周りの人々と話し、助けているのに気づいていた。

He also noticed how knowledgeable he was.

彼はまた、聖バレンタインが学問の人であると確信していることに気づいた。

Convinced that Saint Valentine was a man of learning, he started to bring his blind daughter Julia to him in hope of being healed by him.

彼は、盲目の娘ユリアが彼の手によって癒されることを願って、彼のところに連れてくるようになった。

As Julia was a young girl with a sharp mind, Saint Valentine began reading her books about Roman history and gods.

ジュリアはまだ幼く、頭脳明晰であったため、聖バレンタインは彼女にローマの歴史や神々に関する本を読み聞かせ、彼の目を通して世界を見るようになった。

This way, she began to see the world through his eyes.

And according to some legends, Saint Valentine also eventually healed Julia's eyesight.

また、ある伝説によれば、聖バレンタインは最終的にジュリアの視力も回復させたという。

Asterius was so happy by this, that he readily surrendered to Saint Valentine and took up his faith, Christianity.

こうして、彼はとても喜び、聖バレンタインに容易に降伏し、キリスト教を信仰するようになった。

Soon this news spread like fire and the gods learned about the active is taking place in the dungeon.

すぐにこのニュースは火のように広がり、神々はダンジョンで活発に行われていることを知った。

The pagan emperor was at last informed about the ongoing inside his own castle's dungeons and how Valentine was working his charm over the jailer.

異教徒の皇帝はついに、自分の城の地下牢で進行中の出来事と、ヴァレンタインが看守をどのように魅了しているかを知らされた。

So the enraged emperor immediately ordered Valentine to be summoned before him.

そこで、激怒した皇帝は直ちにヴァレンタインを召喚するよう命じた。

Emperor Claudius II asked Valentine to respect his decision of not allowing the soldiers to marry, as well as to give up his religion.

二代皇帝クラウディウスはバレンタインに、兵士たちの結婚を認めないという皇帝の決定を尊重し、宗教を捨てるよう求めたが、バレンタインはいずれも丁重に断った。

To both of which, Valentine politely declined.

The emperor took Valentine's hostility as an insult to his esteem and sentenced him to be executed.

皇帝はヴァレンティヌスの敵意を尊敬に対する侮辱と受け止め、処刑直前に処刑を宣告した。

Just before the execution, Saint Valentine wrote his last letter to Julia on the 14th of February.

聖バレンタインは2月14日にジュリアに最後の手紙を書いた。

He handed over the letter to Asterius to give to his daughter.

娘に渡すようにと、アステリウスに手紙を渡した。

When she opened the letter, she saw his sign, "From your Valentine."

彼女が手紙を開くと、あなたのバレンタインやtr your timeから彼のサインが見えた。

Did you know, it was much later in 496 AD that Pope Gelasius declared 14th February an official holiday to honor Saint Valentine?

ローマ教皇ジウスが2月14日を聖バレンタインにちなんだ公式祝日としたのは、ずっと後の96年4月のことだった。

Today, Valentine's Day is the fifth largest consumer spending event in the United States after the winter holidays and Mother's Day.

今日、バレンタインデーは、冬休みと母の日のスケッチタイムに次いで、米国で5番目に大きな消費支出イベントとなっている。
