I'm starting to feel a lot better, by the way,

ところで、だいぶ調子が良くなってきました。

for those of you that don't know, I was a little bit sick for a couple of weeks, but I thought since I'm just feeling a little bit better, I'll just make a little English lesson.

ご存じない方もいらっしゃると思いますが、私は2週間ほど少し体調を崩していました。でも今は少し良くなってきたので、ちょっと英語のレッスンを作ろうと思いました。

And this little English lesson will be about three phrases you can use to talk about mistakes.

このレッスンでは、「間違い」について話すときに使える3つのフレーズを紹介します。

I made a mistake this morning.

今朝ミスをしました。

That's the first phrase, by the way.

ちなみに、最初のフレーズです。

When you do something that you weren't planning on doing, we usually describe it with the phrase "I made a mistake."

何か予定していなかったことを行ったとき、通常「I made a mistake.（ミスをした）」というフレーズで表現します。

The mistake I made is I put the wrong attachment on the clippers and I shaved my beard and mustache shorter than I normally do, so I made a mistake.

バリカンのアタッチメントを間違えて、ヒゲと口ひげをいつもより短く剃ってしまったのが失敗でした。

That's the phrase I would use to describe that.

その表現がぴったりです。

And there's a few other... by the way, it will grow back.

他にもいくつか...ちなみに、また生えてきます。

That's the nice thing about this kind of mistake, is if I just wait a few days, it will grow back and look normal again.

このようなミスのいいところは、数日待つだけでまた生えて、元に戻ります。

But does it look shorter?

でも短く見えますか？

Do you recognize me?

私がわかりますか？

Maybe I look a little bit different.

ちょっと違うかな。

Anyways, there's two other phrases you can use to describe a situation like this.

とにかく、このような状況を表現するのに使えるフレーズは他にも2つあります。

The other one is you could say "I messed up."

もうひとつは、「I messed up.（やってしまった） 」です。

This morning I messed up.

今朝は失敗しました。

I don't know why.

なんででしょう。

I'm still trying to figure out how I made this mistake or why I messed up this morning.

まだ、なぜ今朝ミスをしたのか、どのようにしてそのミスを犯したのかを理解しようとしています。

I went to the bathroom, I grabbed the clippers, there was the little attachment laying beside the clippers, and I thought it was the right one, so I clipped it on.

私はトイレに行き、バリカンを手に取りました。バリカンの横に小さなアタッチメントが置いてあって、それが正しいものだと思って取り付けました。

But yes, I definitely messed up.

でも、確かに失敗しました。

And then the third phrase that you could use to describe this kind of situation is very informal and some people even consider it a little bit crude, but I could say "I screwed up."

そして、このような状況を表現するのに使える3つ目のフレーズは、とても軽いで、人によっては少し下品だとさえ思うかもしれませんが、「I screwed up. 」と言うことができます。

I certainly screwed up this morning.

確かに今朝は失敗しました。

Again, it's not too big of a screw up, though, is it?

まあ、それほど大きな失敗ではないですね、そうでしょう？

Because this will all grow back.

また生えてくきますからさ。

So just for a quick review, three ways that you can talk about a mistake that you've made in English.

さて、簡単に振り返ってみましょう。英語で自分のミスについて話す方法は3つあります。

You can say simply, "I made a mistake,"

単純に 「I made a mistake 」と言います。

or you can say "I messed up."

あるいは「I messed up.」と言うこともできます。

Or you could say "I screwed up."

「I screwed up.」と言うこともできます。

Now, there is a fourth way to describe a mistake.

さて、ミスを表現する4つ目の方法があります。

Here's a little bonus phrase for you.

おまけにもう一つのフレーズを紹介しましょう。

If you're talking about something like math or you're talking about maybe you're using a calculator, you might say "I made an error."

数学のようなものを話す場合や、たとえば電卓を使っている場合、「I made an error（私は誤りを犯しました）」と言うかもしれません。

An error and a mistake are very similar.

エラーとミスはよく似ています。

Although when I think about it, I usually use the word mistake as a general term, you know when you do something that you didn't plan to do.

考えてみると、私は通常、ミスという言葉を一般的な用語として使います。何か予定していなかったことをしたときなどに使います。

And I use the word error more for things involving numbers and things like that.

数字とか、そういうものに対してエラーという言葉を使うんです。

I don't think it's a hard and fast rule by any means.

それは決して堅い決まりではないと思います。

But for me personally, when I'm talking about numbers, if I, for instance, was adding up the sales for the week on the farm and I forgot to add in a few sales, I might say,

しかし、私個人としては、数字について話すとき、例えば、私が農場で1週間の売上を集計していて、いくつかの売上を足し忘れたとしたら、こう言うかもしれません。

"Jen, oh, I made an error. Let me fix that."

「ジェン、ああ、間違えた。修正するわ。」

So four phrases, I guess.

4つ目のフレーズです。

I made a mistake.

ミスをした。

I messed up.

失敗した。

I screwed up and I made an error.

やってしまったと、間違えた。

Hopefully you don't make too any errors.

ミスをしないことを祈ります。
