Let's take a little tour of the store.

店内を少し見学しましょう。

So the first thing we usually do when we enter the store is grab one of these things.

通常、店に入ると最初にすることは、これらのもののうちの1つを手に取ることです。

They come in really handy when you're shopping.

買い物の時に不可欠なものです。

Imagine you're in a store with your American friend and you wanna ask them to get one of these.

アメリカ人の友達と買い物に行ったとき、「これ買ってきて」と頼んだとしましょう。

So what do you say?

What do we call it?

Yes, that's right.

It's a shopping cart.

ショッピングカートです。

A fun fact: In Great Britain, Australia and New Zealand, they call it a trolley and you might also hear the word buggy in addition to shopping cart in Southern US and Canada.

豆知識：イギリス、オーストラリア、ニュージーランドではトロリーと呼ばれ、アメリカ南部やカナダではショッピングカートの他にバギーと呼ばれることもあります。

And shockingly, this is not the fullest, but these are the most commonly used ones.

また、衝撃的なことに、これが全てではありませんが、これらは最も一般的に使われているものです。

When we go through the store, we go through the departments; the specific sections or areas of the store that sell particular types of products.

店内を移動すると、departments を通過します。それは、特定の種類の製品を販売している店の特定のセクションやエリアです。

They can also be referred to as sections.

sections と呼ばれることもあります。

There are a lot of different departments in the store among which might be the deli department, clothing department, household goods or seasonal items and so on.

This is for example, the produce department or the produce section.

例えば、青果売り場です。

So if you lost your American friend in the store and they text you and ask you, "Where are you?"

You can say, "I'm in the XYZ section."

「XYZのコーナーにいる。」と言えばいいでしょう。

And these are called aisles.

これを「aisle（通路）」と呼びます。

"Excuse me, where can I find the beans?" "They are in aisle 10."

「すみません、豆はどこにありますか？」「10番通路にありますよ。」

If there's something you need from way up there, but you can't reach it. How do you ask someone for help?

上の方に必要なものがあるのに、手が届かなかったら、どうやって誰かに助けを求めますか？

For instance, you could say to a staff member or someone tall, "Excuse me, can you help me get the pack of cereal from the top shelf?"

例えば、店員や背の高い人に 「すみません、上の棚からシリアルを取るのを手伝ってもらえますか？」と言えます。

I have been in this situation countless times because of my height.

私は身長が高いので、数え切れないほどこのような状況に陥ったことがあります。

So these are called shelves where products are placed for display or storage.

これは「shelve（棚）」と呼ばれるもので、商品を陳列したり保管したりする場所ですね。

And here we have another good word: display.

「display」という言葉もありますね。

It's the arrangement of products in an attractive manner to catch customers attention.

それは製品を引き立てるように魅力的に配置して、顧客の注意を引くことです。

Each individual product displayed on the shelf, we can call an item.

棚に陳列された個々の商品を「item」と呼びます。

Do you know what these are called?

これらは何と呼ばれているかご存知ですか？

Let's imagine there is an item you need to get and this thing is nowhere to be found.

ある「item」が必要で、その「item」がどこにもないとしましょう。

You go looking for an assistant to ask them about it.

アシスタントを探して聞いてみます。

So what do you say?

それで何て言うんですか？

That's right.

そうですね。

You would say, "Excuse me, there's no price tag for this item."

「すみません、この商品には値札がありません 」って言うんでしょう。

So this is a price tag.

これが値札です。

Let's move on.

次に行きましょう。

Sections like these are called clearance.

こういうセクションを「clearance」と呼びます。

It's a section in the store where products are heavily discounted to clear out inventory.

在庫一掃のため、商品を大幅に値引きするコーナーです。

Do you like pasta, by the way?

ところでパスタはお好きですか？

Let's say that you had dinner at your friend's last night and you wanted to know what sauce they used for the pasta.

昨夜友人宅で夕食をとったとして、パスタにどんなソースを使ったか知りたかったとしましょう。

And let's say they told you that it was marinara sauce, but there are different kinds of marinara.

マリナーラソースだと言われたとしましょう。でもマリナーラにも種類があるんです。

So you would need to ask about the brand name to be able to get that specific one.

だからブランド名を聞かないと、その特定のものを手に入れることはできません。

These are the brand names.

これが「brand names（ブランド名）」です。

This is a checkout.

「checkout（お会計）」です。

It's the area where you pay for your purchases with the help of a cashier.

それは、レジ係の助けを借りて購入した商品の支払いを行うエリアですㄡ。

But I, for instance, very rarely go to a checkout.

しかし、私などはレジに行くことはほとんどありません。

I prefer a self-checkout.

セルフレジがいいです。

This is where customers can complete their own transactions.

お客が自分で会計を済ませる場所です。

Do you know what this action is called?

この動作が何だかわかりますか？

Let's say you did this twice and now you need to call an assistant and describe your problem so that they can delete another item.

2回やってしまったので、アシスタントを呼んで、別のアイテムを削除してもらう必要があるとしましょう。

So what do you say?

何て言うんでしょう？

You would say something like, "Hi, excuse me, I scanned this twice."

「すみません、2回スキャンしてしまいました 」とか言うんでしょう。

And they usually reply right away with "no worries," and delete the second item on the list.

そうすると、大抵はすぐに 「大丈夫ですよ」と返事が返ってきて、2つ目の項目を削除してくれるんです。

So this is called scanning an item.

これは「商品をスキャンする」ということです。

And this is a receipt.

これは「 receipt（レシート）」です。

Let's go over a couple of more essential vocabulary words associated with stores.

店舗に関連する必須単語をもう少し確認しましょう。

In every store, you will find products on sale or discounted.

どこの店にも、セール品や値引き品があります。

I'm pretty sure we all know what these words mean, but do you know what the difference is between them?

これらの言葉の意味はみんな知ってると思うけど、何が違うか知っていますか？

If you don't, no worries, I'll tell you.

もし分からなくても、大丈夫、教えます。

So, discounts show you a certain percentage of the original price and when the product is on sale, the price tag will indicate the exact new price.

で、値引きは元の値段の何パーセントかを示すし、商品がセールになると、値札には正確な新価格が表示されるんです。

Also, if you didn't like the item you purchased or the quality wasn't what you had expected or it didn't fit, you can return or exchange it.

また、購入した商品が気に入らなかったり、品質が思っていたものと違ったり、サイズが合わなかったりした場合は、返品や交換が可能です。

To return something means to bring an item back and get a refund, meaning you get your money back.

「return（返品）」とは、商品を持ち帰って返金してもらうことです。

And to exchange something means to give one item back and get another one instead of that one.

「exchange（交換）」というのは、あるものを返して、その代わりに別のものをもらうということです。
