Who is Edmund Burke? Edmund Burke (1729-1797) was an Irish statesman, author, and political
theorist known for his advocacy in the British House of Commons. Often called the "father of
modern conservatism", he supported the American Revolutionaries but opposed the French Revolution.
In his seminal "Reflections on the Revolution in France", he predicted the descent of the
revolution into terror. Burke championed the preservation of traditions and institutions and
preferred gradual change over radical reforms. He emphasized the importance of empathy in political
decisions and was critical of abstract radicalism. Some believe his views on politics were rooted in
historical experience rather than ideologies. Additionally, he criticized the British East
India Company's rule in India, spotlighting abuses under Warren Hastings. Burke's writings
have profoundly influenced political theory and remain pivotal today.
