In this English lesson, I'll teach you five very common questions you might hear if you're having one of these conversations.

And I'll teach you two possible answers for each question.

そして、それぞれの質問に対して、2つの答えの候補を教えます。

One answer that's really, really positive and one that's a little more negative.

本当にポジティブな答えと、少しネガティブな答えです。

The first question that is very common when having a conversation like this is the question: How was your day?

このような会話をするときに、まずよくあるのが質問です： 今日はどうでしたか？

This is a question that you might be asked at the end of your day, maybe by a spouse or a friend.

これは、一日の終わりに、配偶者や友人から聞かれるかもしれない質問です。

And basically they're just trying to figure out how your day went.

基本的には、あなたの一日がどのようなものであったかを知ろうとしているのです。

A very negative answer to this question would be to say, I had a horrible day.

この質問に対する否定的な回答は、「ひどい一日だった」と言うことです。

Maybe your boss was mean to you.

上司に意地悪されたとか

Maybe you were at school and the teacher wasn't very nice.

学校で先生に嫌味を言われたとか

You would just say, I had a horrible day.

ひどい一日だったって言うんでしょ？

A positive way to answer this question, though, is to say, I had an awesome day.

この質問にポジティブに答えるなら、私は素晴らしい一日を過ごしたと言うことになるのですが。

Maybe your boss was really nice to you at work.

職場で上司に優しくされたとか？

Maybe your teacher was in a really good mood, if you're in school, you would then say in a very positive way, I had an awesome day.

学校の先生がすごく機嫌が良かったのかもしれない。学校なら、とてもポジティブな言い方で「今日は最高だった」と言うでしょう。

So how was your day?

それで今日はどうだった？

A negative response: I had a horrible day.

否定的な回答です： ひどい一日だった。

A positive response: I had an awesome day.

肯定的な反応： 素晴らしい一日だった。

Another question that's very common is the question how was the weather?

また、非常に多い質問として、「天気はどうでしたか？

This is a question that someone will usually ask after you went on a trip or maybe after the weekend, and maybe they know that you went and did something fun.

旅行に行った後や週末に聞かれることが多い質問で、何か楽しいことをしたことを知られるかもしれません。

So they'll say, How was the weather?

天気はどうだった？

A negative response would be to say:

否定的な回答は、こう言うでしょう：

The weather was miserable.

天気は悲惨だった。

When we describe miserable weather, we're talking about a day where it rains a lot or a day where it snows a lot.

悲惨な天気というと、雨がたくさん降る日や雪がたくさん降る日を指します。

We're talking about a day where the weather isn't very nice.

天気があまり良くない日の話です。

The weather was miserable.

悲惨な天気でしたね。

If I was to describe the weather in a positive way, though, I would say the weather was gorgeous or the weather was beautiful.

ポジティブに表現するならば、「素晴らしい天気だった」とか「美しい天気だった」と言うのでしょう。

Now, I know we usually use those words to describe people,

さて、私たちは普段、人を表現するときにその言葉を使いますよね、

but if someone says the weather was gorgeous or the weather was beautiful, it usually means it was sunny, not too warm, not too cool.

しかし、もし誰かが「天気が良かった」とか「天気が美しかった」と言ったら、それはたいてい晴れていて、暑すぎず、寒すぎずという意味です。

The weather was just right.

天気は丁度良かった。

The weather was gorgeous or the weather was beautiful.

天気は華やかだったか、天気は美しかった。

Another very common question is the question how was traffic?

また、非常によくある質問として、「交通はどうでしたか？」があります。

We usually ask this question when we know someone regularly drives somewhere where there might be traffic jams or where traffic is bad.

渋滞しそうなところや、交通の便が悪いところをいつも運転している人がいる場合、この質問をすることが多いです。

We say: How was traffic?

こう言います： 渋滞はどうでしたか？

And they might answer in a negative way by saying: Traffic was awful.

そして、彼らはこう言って否定的に答えるかもしれません： 渋滞はひどかったです。

I was in a traffic jam for 30 minutes and I was late for work.

30分も渋滞に巻き込まれ、仕事に遅刻してしまった。

Traffic was awful.

渋滞はひどかった。

That would be your negative response.

それはあなたのネガティブな反応でしょう。

When we give a positive response, though, we usually say: Traffic wasn't bad at all.

ポジティブな回答をするときは、たいていこう言います： 交通の便は悪くなかったよ。

That would be probably the most common way to describe a pleasant experience while driving on the highway.

高速道路を走っていて気持ちよかったという表現が一番多いかもしれませんね。

It wasn't bad at all.

全然悪くなかったよ。

It's as if we always expect traffic to be bad.

まるで交通の便が悪くなることを期待しているかのようです。

We always expect it to be awful.

私たちはいつもひどいと予想しています。

And then when it's good, instead of saying it was amazing, we say it wasn't bad at all.

そして、良かったら「すごかった」と言うのではなく、「全然悪くなかった」と言うのです。

So a negative description: Traffic was awful.

つまり、ネガティブな表現です： 渋滞がひどかった

A positive description: Traffic wasn't bad at all.

肯定的な表現です： 交通の便は悪くなかった。

Sometimes small talk is about movies or television.

世間話といえば、映画やテレビの話だったりしますよね。

And if someone was to say: How was the movie?

そして、もし誰かがこう言ったとします： 「映画はどうでしたか？」

You could reply in a negative way by saying: The movie wasn't very good.

あなたはこう言って否定的に答えることができます： 映画はあまり良くなかったよ。

We don't often use super negative words to describe movies.

映画を表現するのに、超ネガティブな言葉を使うことはあまりない。

We usually just say: The movie wasn't very good.

いつもはこう言います： その映画はあまり良くなかった。

If the movie, however, was good, we might say: The movie was superb.

しかし、その映画が良かった場合、こう言うかもしれません： その映画は最高だった。

Superb is a great word to describe something that's amazing or awesome.

Superb は、何かがすごい、素晴らしいということを表現する言葉です。

The movie was superb.

この映画は最高だった。

So if we're describing a movie that we didn't like, we might say:

では、気に入らなかった映画について説明する場合、こう言うかもしれません：

The movie wasn't very good or the movie wasn't very good at all.

その映画はあまり良くなかった、またはその映画は全く良くなかった。

And if we were to describe it in a positive way, we would say: The movie was superb.

そして、肯定的に表現するならば、こう言うでしょう： この映画は最高だった。

Sports are also a very common topic when having small talk,

また、スポーツの話題も世間話にはよく出てきます、

and you might have someone ask you this question: How was the game?

こんな質問をされることがあるかもしれません： 「試合はどうだった？」

Maybe you just went to see a game and they want to know how the game was.

もしかしたら、あなたが試合を見に行ったばかりで、相手は試合がどうだったかを知りたがっているかもしれません。

How was the game?

Now there's a couple different negative ways to describe a game.

今、ゲームを表現するのに2種類のネガティブな表現があります。

You could say: The game was disappointing.

こう言います： ゲームは期待外れだった。

This would probably mean that the team that you wanted to win lost the game.

これはおそらく、勝ってほしいチームが試合に負けたという意味でしょう。

The game was disappointing.

試合は残念な結果だった。

Maybe, though, the game wasn't very exciting, you might say: The game was boring.

もしかしたら、でも、ゲームはあまり盛り上がらなかった、と言うかもしれませんね： 試合は退屈だった。

Or if you really, really enjoyed the game and you had a lot of fun, you would probably say: The game was amazing.

あるいは、そのゲームが本当に楽しくて、とても楽しかったとしたら、こう言うかもしれません： ゲームはすばらしかった。

This also probably means that the team you liked won.

これもおそらく、あなたが好きなチームが勝ったということでしょう。

So you might say the game was disappointing, the game was boring or the game was amazing.
