It's black and white, furry, and kind of looks like a teddy bear.

Kids all over the world have heard of pandas, but have you ever seen one?

世界中の子供たちがパンダの名前を聞いたことがある。でも、見たことはある？

If you're lucky, you may have seen one in a zoo.

運が良ければ、動物園で見たことがあるかもしれない。

But I'm pretty sure you've never come across one just walking around.

でも、歩いていて出くわしたことはないでしょ？

That's because pandas are very rare, and we can learn a lot from them about what all kinds of animals need to survive in the wild.

それは、パンダがとっても珍しい動物で、私たちが野生で生きていくために必要なことを、パンダから学ぶことができるからなの。

The animals you and I know as pandas are actually called giant pandas,

私たちがパンダって呼んでいる動物は、本当はジャイアントパンダって呼ばれるクマで、

and they're bears, in the same family as brown and black bears.

ヒグマやツキノワグマと同じ仲間なの。

And pandas, like all animals, need certain things to live, like food, water, and a place to sleep and be safe.

それに、パンダも他の動物と同じで、食べ物や水、寝る場所とか、生きるために必要なものがあって、安全であることが必要なの。

We call the place where an animal has all of these things that it needs to live its habitat.

動物が生きていくために必要なものがすべて揃っている場所を、私たちは「生息地」と呼んでいるわ。

The place where you live is your habitat.

住んでいる場所が、あなたの生息地なの！

But let's find out what a panda's habitat looks like.

でも、パンダの生息地はどんなところなのか調べてみよう！

All pandas that live in the wild⏤that is, that aren't in zoos⏤can be found in the mountains of China.

動物園にいない野生のパンダは、すべて中国の山地に生息しているの。

The weather there is cool and wet, and the forests in these mountains make up the pandas' habitat.

現地の気候は涼しく、雨が多い。そして、この山々の森がパンダの生息地を構成している。

Pandas make their homes called dens in places like the stumps of old trees or inside big, hollow logs.

パンダは、古い木の切り株や、大きな丸太の中などに巣穴を作る。

So, these mountain forests give pandas a place to sleep and be safe.

だから、この山林はパンダの寝床になって、安全なの。

But a habitat also needs to provide food for the animals that live there.

けど、生息地には、そこに住む動物のための食料も必要よ。

And the panda's favorite food by far is a plant called bamboo.

そして、パンダの大好物は、なんといっても竹という植物なの。

Pandas eat a lot of bamboo, and quickly.

パンダは竹をたくさん食べるので、すぐに食べられる。

They have to eat a lot to get as big as they do, but the problem with a panda's diet is that they don't eat much else.

パンダはたくさん食べないと大きくなれないけど、パンダの食事の問題は、他のものをあまり食べないってことなの。

The fact is, they're very picky eaters.

実は、彼らはとっても食いしん坊なの。

So, a panda's habitat has to have a lot of bamboo growing in it.

だから、パンダの生息地には竹がたくさん生えていなければならない。

Luckily, the cool, wet forests of China are a great place for growing bamboo.

幸いなことに、中国の冷湿潤な森林は竹の栽培に最適！

All in all, these forests are the perfect habitat for pandas.

つまり、これらの森はパンダの生息地として最適なの。

But there is a problem.

けど、問題がある。

The panda's habitat is getting smaller.

パンダの生息地が狭くなっている。

A long time ago, there used to be a lot of mountain forests for the bears to live in.

昔はクマが住む山林がたくさんあった。

But people started to cut down a lot of the forests to make room for buildings and to use the wood for fuel.

けど、人々は建物を建てたり、木材を燃料として使うために、多くの森林を伐採するようになった。

As they did this, the panda's habitat got smaller and separated into pieces.

そうしているうちに、パンダの生息地は小さくなり、バラバラに切り刻まれてしまったの。

Pandas started to have problems finding enough food to eat and safe places to have their babies.

パンダは、十分な食料と、子供を産む安全な場所を確保するのに苦労するようになった。

And as their habitat got smaller, so did the number of pandas.

それで、生息地が狭くなるにつれて、パンダの数も少なくなっていった。

So, today, there are far fewer pandas than there were a long time ago.

だから、今ではパンダの数は一昔前よりずっと少なくなっているの。

Scientists think that there are fewer than 2,000 pandas living in the wild today.

現在、野生のパンダは2,000頭以下って言われているわ。

But there is good news.

けど、良いニュースもあるの！

Once people learned that pandas were in trouble, they started to do things to help them.

パンダが困っていることを知った人たちは、パンダを助けるためにいろいろなことをするようになった。

People aren't allowed to cut down trees in the panda's habitat anymore,

パンダの生息地の木を切ることはもう許されていないし、

and scientists and volunteers have planted bamboo and trees to try and make the pandas' habitat bigger again.

科学者やボランティアは竹や木を植え、パンダの生息地を再び大きくしようと試みている。

It's hard work, but lots of people are trying to solve the problem.

大変な作業だけど、たくさんの人が問題を解決しようとしているの！

So, pandas are already famous for being cute and cuddly,

だから、パンダはもう可愛い、愛らしいって有名なの。

but they're also a great example of how all animals need a healthy habitat in order to survive, and how sometimes, we can help protect it for them.

けど、すべての動物が生きていくためには、健全な生息環境が必要で、時には私たちがその保護に貢献できるってことを示す良い例でもある！
