Hi tim here with another 9-5 English lesson in today's lesson, we're going to learn how to express support for an idea in english in business.

It's very important to be able to express your ideas confidently.

自分の考えを自信を持って表現できることはとても大切なことです。

That doesn't just mean coming up with new ideas, it can also mean expressing what you think about other people's ideas.

それは単に新しいアイデアを出すということだけでなく、他の人のアイデアに対して自分がどう思うかを表現することでもあります。

In our last lesson we learned how to express doubt.

前回のレッスンでは、「疑い」を表現する方法を学びました。

Today, we're going to look at the other side and talk about how to express support for an idea.

今日は、反対側を見て、ある考えを支持することをどう表現するかについてお話します。

Now, sometimes you want to show moderate support or just a bit of support in this situation, you can use expressions like I guess or I suppose before stating your support and when you state your support, you might use expressions like I can see your point or that's a good way to look at it.

さて、このような状況で適度なサポートやほんの少しのサポートを示したい時は、サポートを述べる前にI guessやI supposeなどの表現を使い、サポートを述べる時はI can see your pointやthat's a good way to look at itなどの表現を使うことがあります。

Let's try a bit of practice with these ways of expressing moderate support for an idea, listen to each example, then repeat it yourself.

このように、あるアイデアを適度に支持する表現について、それぞれの例を聞いて、自分でも繰り返してみる練習をしてみましょう。

I could go along with that.

私はそれに付き合うことができました。

Yeah, I guess I can see your point.

うん、言いたいことはわかる気がする。

That's worth considering.

それは検討する価値がありますね。

I suppose that's a good way to look at it.

という感じでしょうか。

Did you hear that expression, I could go along with that if you go along with something, you agree or support a plan or way of doing something and notice that saying I can or I could are mild expressions.

I could go along with that という表現を聞いたことがありますか？何かに沿って行く場合、その計画や方法に同意したり支持したりすることで、I can や I could は穏やかな表現であることに気づきます。

It's very different from saying, I will go along with that sometimes, however, you don't want to show moderate support instead, you want to show strong support.

しかし、中庸の支持ではなく、強い支持を示したいと思うのです。

Well you might add definitely after I can or I could to turn that expression into one showing strong support.

まあ、I can や I could の後に definitely をつけて、強い支持を示す表現に変えてもいいかもしれませんね。

You might also use words or phrases to emphasize like I'm behind you 100%.

また、I'm behind you 100% のように強調する言葉やフレーズを使ってもよいでしょう。

In that case behind you means I support you or you might say that's a really great idea, you can see how different that sounds then I guess that's a good idea, which doesn't sound strong at all.

その場合、behind youはあなたを支持しますという意味になりますし、それは本当に素晴らしいアイデアだと言うかもしれません、そうするとI guess that's a good ideaと聞こえ、全く強く聞こえません。

Let's try some examples of showing strong support.

強い支持を示す例をいくつか試してみましょう。

Remember to repeat the examples after you hear them.

例文を聞いた後は、忘れずに繰り返してください。

I'm behind you 100%.

100％応援しています。

I can definitely back you up on that.

I must say that's a really great idea, no doubt about it.

So in our last lesson we looked at expressing doubt, but if you say no doubt about it, you're actually saying you strongly support something.

前回のレッスンでは、疑いを表明することについて見てきましたが、疑いを持たないと言うことは、実は何かを強く支持していると言うことなのです。

One other expression you heard for emphasis is I must say you can introduce any opinion with that expression just to emphasize how strongly you feel.

もう一つ、強調のために聞いた表現ですが、I must sayはどんな意見でも、自分がどれだけ強く感じているかを強調するために、この表現で紹介することができるのです。

All right, we've practiced different ways of expressing support, but how does this sound?

Let's listen to a short dialogue between Gillian and Dave.

Jillian is expressing her opinion about who should join a work team.

Dave is expressing support for her ideas.

Daveは彼女のアイデアに支持を表明しているのです。

I think we should bring jane onto the team.

ジェインをチームに入れるべきだと思う。

I could go along with that and maybe Gregory too.

私もそうだし、グレゴリーもそうかもしれない。

He's really smart, no doubt about it now, it's your turn to practice, We'll repeat the dialogue but this time we're going to beep out the second speaker's words.

彼は本当に頭がいいんです、間違いありません。今度はあなたが練習する番です、対話を繰り返しますが、今度は二番目の話者の言葉をビープ音で消していきます。

You will have to say those parts yourself.

そういう部分は自分で言うしかないでしょう。

Remember to start by saying you could go along with that then show strong support for the next idea by saying no doubt about it.

まず、「それなら賛成です」と言い、次に「間違いありません」と強い支持を示すことを忘れないようにしましょう。
