The rat has a rice barrel in hand. It's quite a unique one

What is that?

This is called an Okesa

This is to show that I am a servant of Buddha

Before we put the Kesa on, there is a Sutra we have to say to Buddha so repeat after me

袈裟をかける前に、仏様に言うべきお経がありますから、私の後を繰り返してください。

So for here on, we will go through training as a servant of Buddha

だから、これからは仏の下僕として修行に励むのだ

This is the main hall of our temple

こちらは当寺の本堂

This is where we have the Buddha worshiped

ここで、仏陀を拝ませる

We have the guests seated here for different ceremonies

ここでは、さまざまなセレモニーのためにゲストを着席させています

I want you to try something called the Mokugyo

木魚（もくぎょ）というものを試してほしい

How is it? Is it light or heavy?

どうですか？軽いですか、重いですか？

It's actually pretty light

実はかなり軽い

What is this shape?

この形はなんだろう？

From the past it was the shape of the fish, and that's why it's called Mokugyo, or the wooden fish

昔から魚の形をしていたので、木魚（もくぎょ）と呼ばれています

It may not look like a fish

魚には見えないかもしれませんが

We hit this with this

これで打ちました。

It's to make a sound

音を鳴らすことです

I will be hitting the bigger one, so please follow by chanting Namuamidabutsu

大きい方を叩くので、ナムアミダブツを唱えてついてきてください

This is a way of Buddhism

これは仏教の道である

To chant Namuabidabu will enable you to enter nirvana when you die

南無阿弥陀仏と唱えれば、死んでも涅槃に入ることができる

so to enter nirvana we will chant Namuamidabu

というわけで、涅槃に入るために南無阿弥陀仏と唱えることにします。

Which generation? -Now my father is 26th, and in future I will be 27th

どの世代？-現在、私の父は26歳で、将来は27歳になります。

I'm not sure what the difference between temples and shrines

お寺と神社の違いがよくわからないのですが

The big difference is that shrines worship gods

大きな違いは、神社は神様を祀っていること

but in temples we worship Buddha

けど、お寺では仏様を拝む

This is the big difference

ここが大きな違い

Usually temples have doors to enter

通常、お寺には入るための扉があります

For shrines they have gates called Torii and ahead of that gate is the realm of gods

神社には鳥居があり、その先に神の領域がある。

This separates the border of gods and humans

これが神と人間の境界を分ける

When you pass a gate, it's usually a shrine

門をくぐると、たいてい神社がある

How to enter? -For temples, the most beautiful way is to enter with your hands together

入り方は？-お寺の場合は、手を合わせて入場するのが一番美しいとされています。

There is a version where you put your hands together, and one where you just bow

手を合わせるバージョンと、ただお辞儀をするバージョンがあります。

Both shrines and temples have similar ways of thinking

神社もお寺も考え方が似ている

You don't walk through the middle

真ん中を歩かない

This thought come from the middle being the path which gods or Buddha walk through so you don't walk in the middle

この考えは、真ん中は神や仏が通る道だから、真ん中を歩くなということから来ています。
