Why is it that the Terminator chose to say,

なぜ、ターミネーターは

I'll be back!

I'll be back!

Instead of "I will be back"?

の代わりに、"I will be back "を選んだのでしょうか？

Why did Bill Clinton not contract this sentence?

ビル・クリントンはなぜこの文章を省略しなかったのでしょう？

I did not have sexual relations with that woman.

その女性と性的な関係は持っていない。

And why did king Joffrey not use the contraction "I'm" and, instead, say,

なぜジョフリー王は短縮形の「I'm」を使わず、こう言ったのでしょう。

I am not tired!

わたしは疲れていない！

So, obviously, it's better to use contractions in everyday speech.

つまり、日常会話では明らかに短縮形を使ったほうがいいです。

For example, "I'm tired", "I'm eating", "I'll do this."

例えば、I'm tired「疲れた」I'm eating「食べている」I'll do this.「これする」など。

That sounds normal.

自然に聴こえます。

It would sound like a robot to say things like, "I am eating", "I will be back".

"I am eating"、"I will be back". などと言うとロボットのように聴こえます。

Fun fact: The Terminator himself, Arnold Schwarzenegger, told this story.

ターミネーターことアーノルド・シュワルツェネッガーは、こんな話をしたそうです。

Pronouncing the "I'll" was quite difficult for him with his thick Austrian accent.

オーストリア訛りのある彼にとって、「I'll」の発音はかなり難しかったです。

... for them and listen to it and said, "I'll... I'll..." it... it's just kind of like, uh... and the Terminator doesn't talk like that.

...それを聴いて、"I'll... I'll..."と言って...まるで、あー...ターミネーターはそんな喋り方しないんだけど。

The Terminator would say, "I will be back".

ターミネーターなら「I will be back」と言うでしょう。

However, the director insisted that he say "I'll be back" and not "I will be back."

しかし、監督は "I'll be back "ではなく、"I will be back "と言うようにと主張しました。

Why? Because it sounds more human to say "I'll", the contraction.

なぜでしょう？それは縮約形である「I'll」と言った方が人間らしく聞こえるからです。

But, of course, that's not always true.

しかし、もちろん、必ずしもそうとは限りません。

Sometimes, it's better not to contract, for example:

省略しないほうがいい場合もあります、例えば：

Well, let's say someone asks you, "Have you finished work?"

Have you finished work?「仕事は終わったの？」と聞かれたとしましょう。

And you reply, "Yes, I've."

This is a very common mistake I see with my students, and remember not to do it.

"Yes, I've"⏤that doesn't sound good.

"Yes, I've"⏤ それは良くないと思うんです。

You must have something after.

後ろに何かあるはずです。

"Yes, I finished." Fine.

"Yes I finished." これでよし。

"Yes, I've." Not fine.

"Yes, I've."これは良くないです。

If you don't have that extra information after, don't contract it.

後ろに余分な情報がないのであれば、省略しないことです。

"Yes, I have." That's okay.

"Yes, I have." これでOKです。

And the same is true for other subject-auxiliary or -modal-verb combos.

また、他の主語-助動詞や-助動詞-動詞の組み合わせでも同じことが言えます。

Don't contract them if there is no extra information afterwards.

その後の余分な情報がないのであれば、省略しないでください。

Another example: "Would you like to blah, blah, blah?"

もう一つの例： "Would you like to 〜？"

Yes, I'd.

Yes, I'd.

Again, we have just the subject, this time, with a modal verb.

今回も主語だけです。それに修飾動詞を加えたものです。

You should say, "Yes, I would," not "Yes, I'd."

"Yes, I would" と言うべきで、"Yes, I'd" ではありません。

Why?

なぜでしょう？

Because there's no extra information.

余計な情報がないからです。

If you contract it, remember to put that extra information.

省略する場合は、その余分な情報を入れるのを忘れないようにしましょう。

Yes, I'd love to.

Yes, I'd love to.

And negatives⏤fine to contract.

そして否定形はー省略に適しています。

In fact, it's better⏤you should contract the negatives pretty much all the time.

むしろ、その方が良いです⏤。否定はいつだって省略したほうがいいです。

For example, "Have you finished work?"

例えば、"Have you finished work?"「仕事終わった？」

No, I have not.

No, I have not.「いいえ、まだです」

That sounds a little strong, and, in some cases, maybe aggressive.

ちょっと強い言い方で、場合によっては攻撃的に聞こえるかもしれませんね。

No, I haven't.

No, I haven't.

That looks better, more friendly, more human, not so much robot.

その方が、より親しみやすく、より人間らしく、ロボットらしくない印象です。

So, with the negatives, just remember to contract it.

だから、否定で、省略することだけは忘れないようにしましょう。

Not using a contraction makes the sentence stronger.

短縮形を使わないことで、より強い文章になります。

It adds emphasis and, again, could sound more aggressive, so be careful.

強調され、また、より攻撃的に聞こえる可能性がありますので、注意が必要です。

And this is why King Joffrey said...

そして、これはジョフリー王が言ったことですが

I am not tired!

I am not tired!「わたしは疲れてない！」

He wanted to sound serious and add emphasis

真剣な声で強調したかったのでしょう。

I do not miss Joffrey.

I do not miss Joffrey.「ジョフリーを見逃さない」

See? Stronger!

ほら？より強くなった！

And it also sounds more formal when it's not contracted.

また、省略でない方がフォーマルに聞こえます。

That's why your English teacher will always say,

だから、英語の先生は必ずこう言うんです。

In formal writing, don't use contractions.

正式な文章では、短縮形は使わないでください。

Because it sounds more formal when you don't contract.

省略しない方がフォーマルに聞こえるからです。

Also, some language experts suggest that people don't use contractions when they speak when they want people to believe them.

また、言葉の専門家の中には、人は人に信じてもらいたいときには、話すときに短縮形を使わないという人もいます。

To sound more convincing.

より説得力のある響きにするためです。

So, basically, when they're lying.

だから、基本的に嘘をついているとき

I did not have sexual relations with that woman.

Oh, he really wanted everyone to believe him.

ああ、彼は本当にみんなに信じてもらいたかったんだなあ。

So, the next time your boyfriend or girlfriend says, "I did not cheat on you."

That means they definitely cheated on you. Sorry.

つまり、間違いなく浮気されてます。ごめんね。
