  • I can't wait to play my guitar for everybody today.

  • I've been practicing and practicing with my halmoni.

  • - Halmoni?

  • - Oh, yeah.

  • Halmoni means grandma in Korean.

  • She sings along while I practice.

  • - Well Ji-Young's halmoni sounds really cool.

  • - Oh, she is.

  • - Wow!

  • - What's everybody else doing for Neighbor Day?

  • - Oh, well Elmo and I are sharing food

  • from the community garden.

  • - Dig it.

  • - And I'm teaching a Japanese dance called the Tanko Bushi.

  • I've been doing that dance ever since I was little Alan.

  • It's a dance we do to honor the hard work people did

  • to build our community.

  • - [Ji-Young And Elmo] Aw!

  • - [Mr. Alan] Good, right?

  • - If Alan was a little Alan, that must've been a long long

  • long long long long - Yes, it was a

  • It's so great to be all together on Neighbor Day.

  • - I was thinking of playing "Arirang".

  • It's an old Korean song my grandma taught me.

  • - Is everything okay?

  • - Well, when I was coming back here,

  • a kid yelled out at me to go back home.

  • It really, really, really hurt my feelings.

  • - Of course it did.

  • - It made me feel sad and scared.

  • - Elmo doesn't understand.

  • Wasn't Ji-Young at her home?

  • - Well, what they meant was

  • that she should leave Sesame Street and this country.

  • - Huh?

  • - Ji-Young is Korean.

  • Her family's from a place called Korea.

  • - And there are some people who don't believe

  • that Asian people like me and Anna and Ji-Young

  • belong in this country.

  • - Oh no.

  • - That was wrong and unfair.

  • I'm Chinese and Irish.

  • And if someone told me to go back home, I would be so sad.

  • - And home is where you live with the people

  • who love you, with your family and your friends.

  • - Yeah, Sesame Street is Ji-Young's home.

  • - Exactly.

  • Telling someone to go back home is not a nice thing to say

  • because we're all neighbors.

  • - Yeah but if people don't think I belong here,

  • maybe I shouldn't sing for Neighbor Day at all.

  • - No.

  • What that kid said to you was wrong.

  • We belong here and we should all be very proud of who we are

  • and where we're from.

  • - Alan's right!

  • And we really want you to play a song

  • for Neighbor Day, Ji-Young.

  • - Yeah.

  • You're our neighbor.

  • - And our friend.

  • - And we have lots of neighbors who are Asian

  • and Pacific Islander.

  • And they are so proud of where they're from

  • When I get through with my route

  • ♪ I like to go and shoot some hoops

  • - Yeah.

  • And basketball is really popular in the Philippines.

  • - Who are some other neighbors?

  • - This is my friend, Luana.

  • She's a hula dancer and Hawaiian,

  • which means she's from Hawaii.

  • Oh I dance the hula each day

  • ♪ I tell a special story this way

  • ♪ I'm Hawaiian and I do the hula

  • Come on over and I'll teach it to ya

  • - Hula dancers really tell a story by dancing?

  • - That's right.

  • - Fascinating.

  • - Oh, and you've got to meet my friends, Menons.

  • They're teachers and they're from India.

  • They also share their traditions with their children.

  • ♪ I wear an Indian sari on a special day

  • Though we wear jerseys when it's time to play

  • - Cool!

  • I wear a Korean hanbok sometimes on special days too.

  • - And I wear a happi coat when I dance to Tanko Bushi.

  • - And I wear a cheongsam on Chinese New Year.

  • We're the friends in your community

  • Jim and I are making decorations for Neighbor Day.

  • - Everybody, I want to introduce you to my friend, Jim Lee.

  • - Hi everyone.

  • - And Jim is Korean, just like you.

  • - Oh, (speaking Korean).

  • - My family moved here from Korea when I was little.

  • - And Jim is also an artist.

  • - Really?

  • - I love making art.

  • I know a lot of incredible Asian

  • and Pacific Islander artists working today.

  • Some paint pictures, some design buildings

  • and some draw comic books like me.

  • - Wow.

  • - You draw comics?

  • Tell us everything.

  • - Well, when I was little, I would read comics.

  • In fact, I learned English by reading comic books

  • about superheroes.

  • I love them because the superheroes were so different

  • from other people.

  • I could relate,

  • because sometimes I felt like I didn't belong.

  • - You felt that way too?

  • - Definitely.

  • - Oh, so what did you do when you felt that way?

  • - Well, I started drawing my own superheroes.

  • I created stories where my heroes worked with their friends

  • to make the world better.

  • - Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes!

  • - Sometimes what makes you different from others

  • is your superpower.

  • - Wow! - Whoa!

  • - My art is a great way for me to express

  • how I'm feeling and share who I am.

  • - Well, that's what I want to do with my music today.

  • - Yeah. - Great idea!

  • - Yes.

  • So it's important people hear you.

  • I think there were some bowls in the back.

  • - Ah, okay!

  • - Ji-Young, this is my friend Padma Lakshmi.

  • What are you doing?

  • - We're making samosas for Neighbor Day.

  • - Oh.

  • What are the samosas?

  • - Samosas are food from India, which is where I'm from.

  • - So, Padma is Asian too.

  • - Mhmm.

  • - That's right.

  • Samosas are a savory pastry,

  • usually filled with veggies like potato or meat,

  • and flavored with Indian spices.

  • And you dip it in a sauce called chutney.

  • - Oh, so that's why you need the bowl.

  • - Right.

  • I love teaching people about Indian culture

  • through the food we eat.

  • And my whole family likes trying food from around the world.

  • - Elmo's family loves that too.

  • - Yeah!

  • Food and life is more exciting when you try new things.

  • - Oh, well I can't wait to try what you make!

  • - Elmo too!

  • - Alan too.

  • - I like that attitude.

  • Trying new foods is a great way to bring neighbors together.

  • - [Gonger] I got it, I got it!

  • Whoa!

  • I don't got it.

  • - I think I better go help Gonger.

  • and another bowl of chutney are on the way.

  • Everybody, this is my friend, Chef Melissa King.

  • She makes the most delicious food.

  • - Wow, hi Chef Melissa!

  • - Hey everyone.

  • - What are you making?

  • - We're making one of my favorites, dumplings.

  • I was born in California and I'm Chinese.

  • And this is a traditional snack.

  • During vacations, holidays or Lunar New Year,

  • I would make dumplings with my grandma, mom,

  • cousins, and other family members.

  • It takes a lot of hands and love to make a lot of dumplings.

  • - Elmo's never had dumplings before.

  • - Oh, well you can try them at the celebration.

  • - Okay!

  • - Food is really important in my family.

  • I learned to cook by helping my grandma.

  • - Wow.

  • Me learn to eat by helping me grandma.

  • - I'm really proud to be Chinese.

  • And I love sharing food from my culture.

  • - Well, me love that strategy.

  • Om nom nom!

  • - Cookie!

  • - What?

  • Me appreciating culture!

  • - Cookie.

  • Oh, I'm really proud of my culture too.

  • I love sharing my favorite Korean foods with my friends.

  • My favorite is called Tteokbokki.

  • - I've got some Tteokbokki.

  • - No way.

  • Oh, you guys, they're so good.

  • They're like these chewy yummy sweet rice cakes.

  • Oh, they're amazing.

  • But if you eat too many, sometimes they can get a little--

  • - Om nom nom nom nom nom nom eeh!

  • - Spicy.

  • - Oh no, oh!

  • Wow, wow wow, wow wow wow!

  • So spicy, but worth it.

  • - Cookie and I are making a bunch of different kinds

  • of Asian food for Neighbor Day.

  • There's a lot of different kinds of Asian people,

  • So there's a lot of different kinds of Asian foods.

  • Even though we all have a lot in common,

  • we have really different cultures

  • with our own exciting,

  • - And delicious.

  • - Kinds of food.

  • - Yeah, yeah, yeah, but now we show, no tell.

  • Tada!

  • - [Elmo] Wow!

  • This all looks really yummy.

  • And are those tacos over there?

  • - [Cookie Monster] Yeah yeah yeah.

  • - Wait, aren't tacos from Mexico?

  • - These are bulgogi tacos.

  • They're a mashup of Korean and Mexican foods.

  • - I love bulgogi.

  • - It's great when people share themselves and their culture.

  • It's how neighbors come together.

  • - Yeah.

  • And these bulgogi tacos should come together in me tummy.

  • - Cookie!

  • - Again?

  • - Come together.

  • (gasps) That's it!

  • I know what my song's going to be about!

  • - That's great!

  • - Thanks for the idea, Chef Melissa!

  • - My pleasure.

  • Can't wait to hear your song.

  • Looks like I'm gonna have to make a lot more tacos.

  • - And Tteokbokki and dumplings and the Hong Kong tiramisu.

  • - Wait, what if that mean kid is at Neighbor Day?

  • What if he tells me to go back home again?

  • - Well, you know, we have lots and lots of neighbors

  • who love us, but sometimes someone

  • might say something hurtful.

  • So when that happens, you have to take a deep breath,

  • let it out, stand up straight and say to yourself

  • and to them, that is not okay.

  • And you always have friends around you to talk to.

  • - Thanks, Mr. Alan.

  • - We better go check that out.

  • - Oh, I gotcha!

  • - I do my own stunts.

  • I didn't always know that I could be one.

  • I'm Chinese and when I was growing up,

  • I almost never saw anybody like me in movies and TV.

  • - What?

  • That's a bummer.

  • - And when I did see people like me,

  • they all played the same kind of character,

  • always in the background.

  • And that made me feel like I could only be one kind of thing

  • when I grew up.

  • - But that's silly.

  • You can be anything you want to be.

  • - I know that now.

  • And I want everyone else to know that too.

  • That's why I love being in movies.

  • I can show people that look like me,

  • that our stories matter.

  • Oh, I want to show you something on my phone.

  • - Okay.

  • - I get to work with all different people

  • when I make movies and TV shows.

  • We all came from different places and did different things,

  • but really worked together as a team.

  • - It's great to have a team.

  • - Yeah, like us and our relay race.

  • - Or me and my football team.

  • - I have a lot of upper body strength.

  • - [Group] Oh.

  • - Hey, teamwork makes the dream work.

  • And whenever things get hard,

  • I know the whole team will be there for me.

  • And when we all come together, I feel like I belong.

  • I know I can do it.
