In the celestial court of the Jade Emperor lived seven princesses.

玉皇大帝の天宮には7人の姫君が住んでいました。

Each had their chosen place in court,

それぞれに宮廷での居場所が決まっていました、

but the youngest princess had a special skill.

しかし一番若い王女には特別な特技がありました。

She could pluck clouds from the sky and spin them into the softest robes.

彼女は空から雲を紡ぎ出し、そして柔らかな衣を作ることができました。

Her work was so precise, not even the most expert eye could find a seam.

彼女の仕事はとても正確で、どんなに熟練した目でも継ぎ目を見つけることはできませんでした。

But her craft was the same day after day, and she longed for new inspiration.

しかし、彼女の仕事は毎日同じことの繰り返しで、新たな刺激を求めていました。

Finally, the Queen Mother granted the weaver permission to visit Earth.

そしてついに、クィーン・マザーは織姫に地球を訪れる許可を与えました。

The other princesses would accompany her to protect their sister from earthly dangers.

他の王女たちも同行し、地上の危険から妹を守ることになります。

Dressed in special robes that allowed them to fly between Heaven and Earth,

天と地を行き来できる特別な衣をまとい、

the sisters soared down from the sky.

空から舞い降りました。

The weaver was in awe of the rolling hills and rivers,

織姫はなだらかな丘と川に畏敬の念を抱きました、

and the sisters decided to swim in one of the glittering streams.

そして、姉妹は光り輝く小川で泳ぐことにしました。

As the weaver floated, she dreamt about staying forever.

織姫は浮きながら、いつまでもここにいる夢を見ました。

Meanwhile, a lone cowherd approached the riverbank.

そんな中、一人の牛飼いが川岸に近づいてきました。

He came here often to sweep his parents' grave

彼は両親の墓を掃除するためによくここに来ました。

and speak with his only companion—

そして唯一の仲間に話します。

a stoic bull who listened patiently to the cowherd's sorrows.

牛飼いの悲しみを辛抱強く聞いていた忍耐強い雄牛。

But upon seeing the weaver's beauty, the cowherd forgot his routine.

しかし、織姫の美しさを見て、牛飼いは日常を忘れてしまいました。

While he longed to introduce himself, his lonely lifestyle had made him timid.

彼は自己紹介をしたかったが、孤独な生活が彼を臆病にさせました。

Thankfully, the bull saw his friend's plight and offered some advice.

有難いことに、牡牛は友人の窮状を察して、アドバイスを与えてくれました。

He told the cowherd of the swimmer's celestial origins and of her dream to stay on Earth;

彼は牛飼いに、織姫の天界での家柄と、地上に留まりたいという彼女の夢を話しました；

but also that she could only remain if she lost her ticket back to Heaven.

それだけではなく、彼女は天界への切符を失った場合のみ地上に留まることができると。

As the cowherd approached, the princesses flew away in fear—

牛飼いが近づくと、王女たちは恐れて飛び去りました。

leaving their dreaming sister behind.

夢見る妹を残して。

While keeping her magic robes hidden,

魔法のローブを隠しながら、

the cowherd offered his own garment as a substitute.

牛飼いは自分の衣を身代わりに差し出しました。

And after gaining her trust, the pair began exploring the countryside.

そして彼女の信頼を得て、二人は近郷を探索し始めました。

She was struck by his caring nature,

彼女は彼の気遣いに心を打たれました、

and he learned to see the world's wonder through her eyes.

Before long, the two had fallen deeply in love.

The weaver and the cowherd built a prosperous life.

織姫と牛飼いは豊かな生活を築きました。

Their farm flourished, and the weaver taught her skills to local villagers.

彼らの農場は栄え、織姫は地元の村人たちに彼女の技術を教えました。

As time marched on, the pair was blessed with two healthy children,

時は流れ、二人は健康な二人の子供に恵まれました、

but their bull was growing old.

しかし、彼らの雄牛は老いていきました。

Before he died, the bull implored the family to keep his hide

牡牛は死ぬ前に、自分の皮を残しておくよう家族に懇願しました。

and use its magic at their time of need.

そして、いざという時にはその魔力を使うようにと。

While the husband grieved for his friend,

夫が嘆き悲しむ中、

the weaver's mind turned to her other family.

織姫の心はもう一人の家族に向いていました。

Dusting off her magical robe, she decided to pay a visit to the heavens.

魔法のローブのホコリを払い、彼女は天界を訪れることにしました。

But when the weaver swept into her old home,

しかし、織姫が古巣に入った時..、

no one seemed surprised to see her.

誰も彼女をみて驚きませんでした。

With a start, she realized that barely any time had passed—

ハッとして、彼女はほとんど時間が経っていないことに気づきました。

for a year on Earth was merely a day in Heaven.

地上での一年は、天国での一日に過ぎないのですから。

When her family learned of her new life, they were enraged.

彼女の新しい人生を知った家族は激怒しました。

How dare she waste her love on a human?

人間に愛を捧げるとは何事だ？

The weaver tried to escape back to Earth,

織姫は地球に逃げ帰ろうとしました、

but the Queen Mother plucked a golden hairpin from her head and tore through the sky.

しかし、クィーン・マザーは彼女の頭から金のヘアピンを抜き取り、空を切り裂きました。

A great gulf opened, forming a river of stars between Heaven and Earth.

大きな溝が開き、天と地の間に星の川ができました。

Below, the cowherd trembled, but he also remembered the bull's final words.

牛飼いは震え上がりました、しかし、牛の最後の言葉を思い出したのです。

Hastily placing each child in a basket,

急いで子供をかごに入れ、

he draped the bull's pelt over his back and hurtled upwards.

牡牛の毛皮を背中にかけ、上に向かって飛び上がりました。

Above the clouds, each lover attempted to wade through the surging stars.

雲の上で、 二人は星をかき分けようとしました。

But no matter how hard they struggled,

しかし どんなに頑張っても、

the gulf between them only grew wider.

二人の溝は広がるばかりでした。

Day after day, the Queen Mother watched without pity.

毎日毎日、クィーン・マザーは憐れみもなく見守っていました。

Years passed, and the weaver and the cowherd had no one,

月日は流れ、織姫にも牛飼いにも誰もいませんでした、

except the passing magpies to cheer them on.

通りすがりのカササギだけが彼らを励ました。

Finally, their love moved the Queen Mother's heart.

そしてついに、彼らの愛はクイーン・マザーの心を動かしました。

While she couldn't forgive her granddaughter entirely,

孫娘を完全に許すことはできませんでしたが、

the Queen Mother would allow the weaver to meet her earthly family once a year.

クイーン・マザーは年に一度、織姫が地上の家族に会うことを許しました。

And so, in late summer, the magpies forma bridge across the Milky Way,

そして夏の終わり、カササギは天の川に橋を架け、

reuniting the weaver and the cowherd.

織姫と牛飼いを再会させます。
