which gives you a fantastic view of all the great places  that you can explore while you're here

there is so much to see let's not  waste any time

It's worth noting that Iwaki is only 2.5 hours by car from Tokyo

実はいわき市は車で立ったの2時間半。特急でも上野から2時間くらいで行けます

if you're going to  the top of the iwaki marine tower

いわきマリンタワーに登るときも

going to a dharma festival

ダルマのお祭りに行くときも

perhaps exploring the  local aquarium

または地元の水族館を訪問するときも

you're going to need energy to do all of that

エネルギーを消費します

so the first thing we did was hunt  out a delicious cafe at iwaki station

それなので我々が最初にしたのはイワキ駅近くの美味しいカフェを探すことでした

the name of this cafe is Break

このカフェの名前はブレイク

and it's quite popular with  the locals

地元の人の間でも有名です

i could see that as soon as i walked in

入った瞬間それがわかりました

well frequented

賑やかで

made me really really happy to  see that

繁盛しているのは嬉しいことです

it has a few specialties but the one that particularly drew me to it was that it has an  oversized sandwich

which uses 1.5 loaves of bread in its creation

if you can believe that

信じられないかもしれませんが

you think you know how big it's going to be

until it drops on the table

and i think no matter who  you are you're going to be kind of surprised by the size of this thing

誰であったとしてもこのサンドの大きさには驚きますよ

you're not going to be  disappointed

大きさにガッカリすることはありません

now if your eyes felt a little bit bigger than your stomach

それがテーブルについた時にお腹にはちょっと入らないかもしれないと

once it drops onto your  table

i think there's no shame in sharing this with a friend

友人とシェアしても良いでしょう

although if you're really hungry you  probably crush your way right through to the other side of it

as for the ingredients

so nice

the vegetables were super fresh

中の野菜もとても新鮮

everything was good

now the encore that we went with was an oversized  parfait

brimming with many different kinds of fruit

splashed with whipped cream all over

and  of course a delectable cherry on top

no one i think has ever left break feeling hungry

and i say that with great great confidence

there's real charm here

the  little lady who was running the store that day was so kind to us

この日に店を切り盛りしていた女性はとても親切でした

kept coming over making sure  that we were okay

everything was all right

全てが良かったです

really really nice pleasant laid-back atmosphere

リラックスできる素敵な空間です

well worth dropping into if you're around the station

駅近くに来たら是非寄ってみたい場所ですね

with great value for what it is that they're selling

提供しているものは本当の価値の高いものです

even got a nice little fist bump from that kind little lady at the end

最後にその女性とグータッチをしました

after  being super fueled for the rest of the day

一日乗り切るための十分なエネルギーを得て

who among us doesn't enjoy getting to be a kid again on some occasion

たまに子供に戻りたいと思わない人なんていますか？

and that's what i felt when i went to visit the iwaki aquarium

そんな気分にさせてくれたのがいわきアクアマリンです

i haven't  been to something like this since i was probably 10 years old

10歳以来このような施設には来たことがありませんね

and it was never on the scale  that i found here

そのときもこんな大きい場所ではありませんでした

also pleasantly surprised to see that they actually had a lot of fuzzy cute  land animals that you could observe

そしてふわふわして可愛い陸の動物がいることにも正直驚きました

another part of the experience was seeing feeding time in the enclosure

where the caretakers would throw chunks of the food for the day into the water

今日の餌を飼育員が水の中に投げ入れます

and then you would watch them the animals rush up to the glass and make off with their delicious lunch

そしてガラス近くで動物が餌に食いついて持っていく様子が見られました

they looked very very happy and i feel like that was indicative of the kind of care that they were getting

動物らはとても幸せそうで、よく手入れがされているのだなとわかりました

the aquarium itself is separated into two buildings

水族館自体は二つの大きな建物に分かれていました

the larger of the sea creatures can  be found in the second building

大きな方の動物は２つ目の建物にいました

and before we even went in we commented that it sounded like  there were dinosaurs in there

その建物に入る前にまるで中に恐竜がいるような声が聞こえてきました

because of some of the incredible loud sounds that you could hear

it was peaceful watching all the fish swim around

and a real joy to explore because there were so many rooms

that had been modeled after different   parts of specific warmer climates

making it  something of a vacation from the cold

which was very very welcome for me

a definite highlight for  me is when we entered the sea lion enclosure

この水族館の私にとってのハイライトはアシカを見た時です

where at first it was only in my mind that i felt like a  kid

here i actually got to behave like one

ここでは実際に子供のように行動してしまいました

playing along with them as they were swimming around

彼らが泳ぐ様子を見ながら遊べました

and it started to feel like a little bit of a terrence malek movie actually

実際少しだけテレンス・マレックの映画の中にいるようでした

again they looked really  really well cared for

そして彼らもまた同じようにしっかりと飼育されているようでした

太っており、楽しそうでした

and the attendance giving them a really really good lunch

そしてしっかりと昼食を与えられて

lots of different amounts of fish for them to eat

大量の魚を食べていました

the hottest part of the whole aquarium  would come next

そして水族館の最もアツい場所が次でした

where it was basically tropical inside the building

そこは建物の中が熱帯雨林でした

and i had to take  off my jacket

もうジャケットを脱ぐ必要がありました

to not overheat

all the plants the fauna that you saw

そこにある大量の木や植物を見て

and then there were aquariums which were filled with all kinds of fish

そして多くの魚を見て

what i was not expecting to see was  that actually in some of these aquariums  

そしてあまり水族館で見ることはないと思っていましたが

near the end of the tour as you were walking  through

順路を歩いて最後の方では

you actually saw scuba divers who were maintaining the tanks

タンクの手入れをしているスキューバダイーバーを見ることができました

looking after them

魚や海の生物に餌をやったり

feeding  the sea anemones

壁の掃除をしていました

and cleaning all the walls

このように水族館がとても手入れされている様子を見ると

contributing to this idea that the aquarium is  lovingly attended to

そしてそれを支えている人々が素晴らしい体験をさせてくれることを知ると

and just the people again making the experience so so wonderful

感動しますね

if i were to return to IWAKI i would go here again

イワキに来たらまたここに戻ってきたい気持ちになります

and definitely spend more than the time that we had available to us in this visit

今回のように制限された時間ではなく、じっくりと見たいと思います

if only i had better luck

well japan has an answer for that

we got to go to a festival that was  going on in iwaki

イワキで開催されているお祭りに行けました

where they claim to make the real daruma

そこでは本物のダルマがあるそうです

the real doll of luck

and we got to sit down for a quick conversation

そこで少しお話を聞くことができました

with a family that's been doing  it for many many generations

何世代もこちらで受け継がれていて

and answered all the burning questions  that i had about this particular tradition

この伝統について持っていた疑問を答えてくれました

and we were lucky enough to actually have the brother of the owner of  the company

give us a little bit of his time

夕日の時の景色をどうしても見たかったからです

and give us a message for anyone who might be considering coming to visit iwaki

素晴らしかったです

with my belly full of some of the most  amazing seafood i've ever had

そしてその中でも特に素晴らしかったのは灯台です

i headed down to the peninsula again

ここは特に見たかった

because i wanted to see what the views were like as the sun was setting

日が暮れる時になって影が落ちかけていく時の様子は本当に感動的です

it was incredible

ようやく食べたカロリーを消費することができました

and definitely a highlight  for me would have to be the lighthouse

ならば地元の居酒屋で楽しみたいものですね

that i went to see

そこでは福島の酒がとても揃っているようです

and it was so cool to see just as the  shadow would pass over it as the sun went down

そこは大量の種類の日本酒が並んでいるお店でした

but again that meant i burnt off all those calories and needed to eat

地元産でいきましょう

so what better place to enjoy but another local izakaya

福島のお酒です

where they specialized in a lot of great japanese sake from fukushima

we've come to a place that has incredible selection in terms of the Nihonshu that they  have on offer

we've gone for fukushima

個人的には辛口派です

and then within that you have a couple of different flavor profiles

it's a gentler flavor  if you've not tried the Nihonshu before

日本酒だけを求めてこのお店にみんな来るわけではありませんよ

it's really easy to  like

almost too easy to like in fact

i enjoyed a whole lot of it when i was there

二日目は福島の山を登りました

but rather i tell you what it is that they  enjoy

for our second day we ascended the mountains of  fukushima

または人生での初体験

to once again do something

今日はあぶくま洞に来ています

experience something

実は鍾乳洞に入ったことが無いのです

that i never had before since  living in japan

そしてこれはかなり大きい

or in fact in my entire life

さらに色々と中にあるようです

today we're at abukuma caves

すごく楽しみです

i've never  ever been to a cave before

この洞窟は1969年に発見されたようです

and this one is quite extensive

採掘の調査の途中で発見されたようで

with a lot of interesting  features

７０年代後半に一般公開されたようですね

i think it's going to be a lot of fun

２００４年には累計1900万人の訪問者があったようです

so this cave was first found in 1969

その数字だけからもここがかなり有名であるとわかりますね

in a quarrying operation

この洞窟には一年の中、いつきても楽しいと思いますが

and then they later in the 70s opened it to the public

でも今回は冬なので特別な経験ができそうです

by 2004 over 19 million people have come to visit the cave

you can imagine then by  now that it's been very very very popular

すごく特徴的です

i think it'd be interesting to come here at all times of the year

but we're getting this very very interesting experience out of winter where

it's giving it a very distinct vibe

there's a whole lot  that's surprising me here

i thought that it was only going to be narrow

一年通して気温は15度程度のようです

and there's great  expanses of space in some areas

ここが最初にこの洞窟が発見された入り口のようです

i thought it was going to be cold

採掘作業の一環だったことがわかります

and it's actually surprisingly  warm

ここを突き抜けたのでしょうね

it maintains a temperature of 15 degrees celsius all year round

そして古い道具や梯子の様子がまだみられます

here we are at where they actually found the first initial entrance to the cave

その当時はどんな様子だったのでしょうね

you can see it was a mining operation when  they busted through

さらに洞窟の奥の方に行くと

and you can see some of the old equipment and staircase that would have  led down into it

what a day that must have been

一つは探検コース

once you enter the cave and got in a little bit further

もう一つはレギュラーコース

you have two options before you enter the main cavern

今回は冒険コースをいきましょう

one of which is the  exploration course

and one of which is the regular

今通った場所は魂の洗浄をしてくれる場所らしいです

we're going to take the exploration course

そのような湖

to make it just that much more exciting

湖というよりは池のようでしたが

let's go

でも魂を洗浄してくれるならば大歓迎

we just passed what was said  to be where you purify your  soul

でも魂を洗浄してくれるならば大歓迎嘘偽りはありませんでした

in the lake

頭を気をつけないほど天井が低くなりますが

not much of a lake more  like a little pond

私の身長は１８５cmありますが通過可能です

but i'll take anywhere i can purify my soul

それなので少し背が高いから無理と思っても

they're not kidding  when they call this the adventure course

通れると思いますよ

it is low you got to watch your head

大袈裟に言っているわけではなくてインディジョーンズと同じような体験ができますよ

i will  say though i'm 6'1 and it's totally doable

クリスタルスカルの王国のようなレベルではなく

so don't be afraid if you're a little bit  taller to get through here

最後の聖戦や魔宮の伝説レベルの冒険です

no exaggeration that this has some  serious indiana jones-like qualities to it  

この洞窟のメインの洞窟に辿り着きました

and i'm not talking about like kingdom of  the crystal skull letdown
