というわけで、日米のオタク文化の違いについてです。

日本とアメリカでアニメ関連なんかの文化に大きな違いはあると思う？

Shine is half Japanese. He's lived in both America and Japan.

And his channel has a lot focusing on video games or anime or kind of random stuff,

so I thought he would be a really good person to ask about this subject today.

アメリカだと「何だこの変なアニムというのは？」みたいな人もいるし。

So today I wanted to discuss the differences between otaku culture in America and Japan.

アニメが好きなだけで馬鹿にされることもあるしね。

We have a lot of viewers who ask "What is it like to be otaku in Japan?"

その点は発祥国でもあるし、アニメ自体は日本で受け入れらていると思います。

"Is it okay? How are Japanese people going to view me?"

アメリカでは成人でも楽しめるカートゥーンも少ないですし。

I feel like it's kind of the same, but I feel like it's a little more accepted in Japan

because I mean Japan made it, right?

私が高校生のときに

In America it's like, "What is this weird thing that you call 'animu'?"

アニメが大好きでキャラを真似たりする人達がいたんですが、

"What is this animu? What is this?!"

中には漫画みたいに、すごい勢いで人に抱きつくglompをする人達がいました。

And people kind of make fun of you for it.

コスプレ・イベントとかでもあるよね。

So I guess at least everyone here is accepting of anime

知らない他人にも？

because it's a Japanese thing.

うん。

Whereas in America-

glompは日本でもあるの？

[Here] you're not like a weirdo who likes foreign stuff. Right.

日本じゃ絶対になさそう。

In America, too, we don't have many cartoons that are geared toward adults.

うん、ないと思う。僕の高校では誰もしなかったし。

We do have stuff like Archer that has a little bit older of an audience.

というか、さっきレイチェルに聞いて初めて知ったし。

Yeah, I love Archer, too. But there's not too much.

アメリカではアニメ・オタク文化はそういった事をする人たちの所為で悪い印象があると思う。

I was curious, though, because when I went to high school like ten years ago in America,

パーソナルスペースを無視して、いきなり抱きついたりとか...

we had a lot of people who were so into anime

アメリカのコスプレ・イベントには行ったことないけど、いきなり触られたりするって聞いたことがあって

that they wanted to act like the characters

うん。別に受け入れらてる訳じゃないけど、する人は沢山いる。

and they would do this thing called "glomping"

日本だと、そもそもボディタッチ自体が一般的じゃないし

where you like run at someone and pretty much just leap onto them

恋人同士でも、公共の場だとハグもしないし。

and give them a hug. And that type of hug is called a glomp.

見ず知らずの人なら、言うまでもないです。

Yeah, they did that at cosplay conventions.

日本人は空気を読めるし。

Yeah, even to people they didn't know, if they liked that character.

社会常識を逸脱するような人はほとんどいないってことですね。

Right.

僕が高校生の時、オタクのクラスメイトが数人いたけど

I was wondering if that happens in Japan.

一人はほっそりした人で、

Wow yeah, I feel like you would never see anyone do that here.

別に普通で、静かだったし

Right.

誰も何の問題も無かった。

I don't think that would happen in Japan. In my school no one did that.

もう一人は太ってて、声が大きくて皆を笑わせてた。好かれてたよ。

変なこともしないし、アニメが好きって聞いたら

アニメキャラの真似とかもしないし。

日本にも中二病って概念があるらしいですが、

I think anime or otaku culture gets a really bad image in America because of that,

中学2年の病気って書くのかな。

like people invading other people's personal space,

自分の中で特別な設定なんかを持っていたりとか。

or assaulting people, even.

アニメ以外でもよくて、高校生の時に自分が吸血鬼だと思ってた人もいたし

I've never actually been to a convention in America, but I've heard

自称イエス・キリストの生まれ変わりもいたかな。

people just come up and touch them...?

とにかく、日本にもそういうのはあるんだ？

Yeah, that definitely happens.

うん。まあ、僕も子供の頃はそんな感じだったけど。

It's not like it's an accepted thing. People get upset over it,

魔法少年みたいな。

but it does happen a lot.

I feel like in Japan just touching people in general is not something you do.

子供なら普通よ。

Like you don't even hug people you're dating in public, so

今でもジョークで時々するけど、

that's definitely not something people would do to someone they don't know.

別に、ぼく魔道士じゃないし。

Yeah, Japanese people can read the situation better, I feel like.

「アニメが本当に大好きな外国人が日本に来ても、大丈夫だと思いますか？」

Yeah, kuuki wo yomu (read the atmosphere).

うん。

So I guess like otaku here have a little more social awareness.

周りに迷惑をかけなければ、大丈夫だと思います。

And fit in a little bit better.

でもアニメが大好きな人は、日本人が皆アニメ好きだと期待しないほうがいいと思います。

Yeah, when I was in school I had a couple people I knew who were otaku.

どこでもそうですが、好き嫌いは人によって違います。

One guy was skinny and he, you know, just fit in.

日本人はきっとアニメ自体は好きだけど、のめり込んでる訳じゃないと思う。

He was quiet and no one cared.

僕らがコミックを読む感覚で、漫画を読んでる。

And there was another one, he was fat and loud, but everyone liked him.

うん、そうだね。

He was like the school clown.

僕は親がくれたものを読んだし、読んでるからオタクって訳でもないし。

Everyone accepted him.

別に漫画くらい、日本人なら誰でも読むよ。

He was not awkward, he was not "anime."

のめり込んで執着してるって訳じゃないし。

If I asked him, "Do you like anime?" he'd be like, "Yeah I love anime!"

どこにでも、すごいハマってるファンはいるしね。

That's it.

スターウォーズが好きで、ジェダイのコスプレしたり、劇中言語を書いたり、

He wouldn't pretend to be anime or anything.

どこかにそんな赤毛女もいます。

He just said, "I like anime" and acted like himself.

オタクの人は好きなものを色々集めたり、詳しいってイメージがあるから

So there's a word in Japanese, too. Chuunibyou.

形容詞的に使われたりもするよね。

I think it translates to like "Middle school sickness" or something.

電車オタクとか。

Yeah.

ああ、そっか。weeabooとの違いが分かった。日本人になりたいのがweeabooか。

Like people who pretend to be or sometimes even think that

weeabooも色々あって、

they're something more than they really are.

日本やアニメが好きな人のコミュニティにいる人達は

Yeah.

weeabooを、「日本にクレイジーな人、日本について何でも知ってるけど、他人の話を聞かない人。

It's not just anime. I knew people in high school who thought they were vampires.

時々、glompとかする人」と定義します。

I knew someone who thought he was the reincarnation of Jesus.

でも、中にはこの定義をすっ飛ばして

Oh my god.

「日本が好きなら、お前はweeabooだ」と言う人もいます。

We heard this story earlier.

だから色々います。

We heard this story, yeah.

正直、ふざけてるよね。

So yeah, but that's a Japanese word, so that does happen here, too.

人をオタクとかweeabooとか、ラベリングしてさ。

Yeah but I feel like...

誰にも迷惑かけてないなら、好きな趣味を持てば良いよ。

When I was younger, I was like that, too.

好きなキャラのキーホルダーを300個でもつければいいじゃない。

I was like magic.

迷惑かけてないなら、気にしなくていいよ。

I would get like a book and robe you know,

でも、他人があなたの好きなアニメを好きじゃないからって、迷惑かける人にはならないで。

like "I am dark flame master!"

イメージの悪化を助長するだけだから。

But that's normal for kids.

他人に迷惑をかけるweeabooは厄介なだけだから。

Right, for kids yeah.

まあ、そんな感じです。

I still do it because it's funny. I do it as a joke.

誹謗中傷もだよね。

But I don't really think I'm magic or anything.

自分の好きなものを相手も好きじゃないから「死ね」とか...

Do you think then that foreigners who are really into anime

言われたな、それ。

if they come to Japan, they'll be okay here?

Yeah, why not?

「アニメは好きじゃない」とか言ったら、「何だとテメー」って感じだよ。

As long as you're not hurting anyone, I think it's fine.

何でそんなに必死なの？

Yeah.

何でそんなに気に障るんだろうね。

I feel like if you're super into anime,

スターウォーズが好きじゃないって言われても、別に気にしないし。

don't come to Japan thinking everyone is into anime just because they're Japanese.

私は好きじゃない。

Because there's definitely that divide of people, just like there is in other parts of the world.

気にしないよ。

People who like anime and people who aren't interested in it.

I love Star Wars!

I feel like everyone in Japan likes anime,

まあ、とにかく

but they're not like fully into it.

「死ね」などの誹謗中傷は

As in like reading manga is like reading a comic.

どんなジャンルでもあるよね。

Right, it's just normal.

K-popとか。

They have like one comic, they seriously read it,

クレイジーなファンはどこにでもいます。

they're like "What? Is this a thing?"

あとは見ず知らずの人に触るとか、抱きつくとか。

"I just read it because my parents gave it to me and I started reading it."

友達同士でも、先に聞いたほうが懸命だと思う。

I feel like it's just an everyday thing.

友達なら、まあいいんじゃない。

Yeah.

問題無いなら大丈夫。Shineは大丈夫。

Not like some obsession, you know.

迷惑をかけていないなら、好きなことを好きになればいいです。

Yeah, okay. So just like any genre has the super hardcore fan.

他人が同意しなくても、誹謗中傷はしない。

So there are people who like Star Wars and just watch the movies sometimes when they come on tv,

アニメが好きじゃないなら、好きな人に酷い事は言わない。

and there are people who like Star Wars and have Jedi costumes and can write in Aurebesh

あなたがアニメファンなら、他のファンの事も考えて行動したほうが良いです。

and that's TOTALLY NOT ME AT ALL

あなたの言動で、他のコミュニティの人の印象を悪くすることもあります。

I'm not talking about me.

僕なら懐を広くして、誰とでも仲良くやるよ。

I think we kind of define otaku as

一人だけでも、影響力は大きいですから。

someone who's really obsessive and collects a lot of stuff,

他の人もアニメを避けるようになるし。

and they might know a lot of details about it.

日本に興味を持つだけで、不名誉なことを言われたりもするし。

So otaku is just kind of like fanatic.

来日する外国人の中には

You can be otaku anything, like "densha otaku" or train otaku.

「僕はアニメで日本が好きな訳じゃない。文化が好きなんだ」

I got it, and weeaboos are people who want to be Japanese, right?

そう、そう。なんか変に言い訳する人が多いよね。

...Yeeahh? [kinda]

アニメが好きで、いいじゃない。

Okay, now I know the difference.

アニメを見たくないって友達がいるんだけど、

There's a whole range for "weeaboo" now.

聞いたら、コミュニティが酷いからって。

People who are in the Japanese community or like anime, etc

「いいから、見てみなよ」

they say a "weeaboo" is someone who is obsessed with Japan,

「でも、アレコレ言われたくないし...」みたいな。

wants to be Japanese, claims they know everything about Japan, doesn't listen to other people,

しがらみが面倒なんだね。

or even sometimes physically harasses other people

ぬいぐるみにglompされてる。

or gets angry at people who don't like the same things that they do.

ハラスメントね。

But then other people take the definition of weeaboo all the way down to the bottom

とにかく、迷惑はかけない。

and just say, "If you like Japan, you're a weeaboo period."

道徳の時間みたいだね。

So there's like a whole range.

良き人になりなさい。

Honestly the whole thing is just ridiculous. Yeah.

ご飯は残さず食べなさい。

Just labels for people in general is ridiculous.

野菜も残さずね。

Like otaku, weeaboo, who cares.

遅刻しないで。

If you're not hurting anyone, who cares what your hobbies are.

ドラッグ、ダメ絶対。

Right.

But just don't be that weeaboo who harasses other people for not liking your anime.

That's what makes the anime community so bad.

That's why people think weeaboos are so bad.

It's because of those weeaboos who attack other people.

Yeah, so like the verbal attacking,

getting angry at someone, calling someone names, or even telling people to die

or giving them death threats if they don't like the same thing as you.

I get that.

Agh, really?

If I say I don't like an anime, they're like "How dare you?!"

How dare you not like my anime?

Yeah.

Why take it so seriously?

Why do you care? People like different things.

Why do you care if someone doesn't like the same thing as you?

I don't understand that at all.

I would never get offended if someone said they didn't like Star Wars.

I don't care!

I don't like Star Wars.

I don't care! That's fine!

Okay, well, getting back onto subject,

there's verbal harassment like that.

Actually telling people to go kill themselves, which is not cool.

And this happens to every genre where you have really in depth fans.

Every community. Kpop fans...

Every genre has that extreme end.

And then there's like the physical harassing,

where you actually go up and touch people you don't know,

or you run at and jump on and hug people you don't know...

Or even your friends. You just shouldn't do that to people without their permission.

I mean I don't know, maybe friends.

If they're okay with it.

He's okay with it. I'm not okay with it.

As long as you're not hurting someone, like what you like.

Just don't be upset if other people don't like what you like.

If you don't like anime, don't be a jerk to people who like it.

Right. Who cares?

And understand that you as an anime fan

kind of do represent the whole anime fanbase.

When you harass other people and get mad,

you're pretty much damaging the anime community name.

So if I was you, just be nice to everyone

and accept people's opinions.

Because even if you say "Oh it's just one person"

one person can make a big difference.

Yeah, it pushes other people away from it, too.

There's a huge stigma around being interested in Japan.

And everyone who comes to Japan say, "I don't like Japan because of anime."

"I like the culture."

Yeah, they feel like they have to say that.

It's ridiculous. You shouldn't be embarrassed for liking anime.

And I know many friends who are like, "I don't want to watch anime."

I'm like, "Why?"

He's like, "The community is just terrible."

"Come on man, just watch it."

"No, I don't want to get harassed."

And I feel bad.

They just don't want to be part of it.

Just don't hurt people.
