Well, you’ve come to the right place. In this series of SHORTS, we’ll be highlighting a different specialty within medicine and give you a snapshot of the most important things you need to know about each one. But before you can specialize, you must first become a doctor. In the United States, you must earn your bachelor’s degree in university over 4 years, then complete 4 years of medical school, then complete residency - lasting anywhere from 3 to 7 years - followed by fellowship for additional sub-specialization. With all the time you’ll spend in training, it’s critical that you make sure you’re going into it for the right reasons. If you’re in it for the money, the prestige, or because of parental pressure, you either won’t last or you’ll be miserable. Being a doctor is more than just “helping people.” You are the leader of the healthcare team. You’ll face tough intellectual challenges, and your patients’ health will be in your hands. It’s a tough path, but if you can weather the storm, there’s nothing else quite like it. To learn more, watch the full video here.
