So even native speakers make a lot of mistakes.

For example, whose bag is this meaning who does this bag belong to?

例えば、Who's bag is this は、このバッグが誰のものかという意味です。

And you can say it's my bag.

It's your bag.

あなたのバッグです。

It's a possessive if you really don't know, just try and replace the S.

どうしてもわからない場合は、Sを置き換えてみるといいでしょう。

With the verb to be and see if it works.

to beという動詞を使って、うまくいくかどうか。

If it works, then it's the contraction of the verb to be.

うまくいったら、それはto beという動詞の短縮形です。

Let's see together with a few examples first, who's calling?

まずは例を挙げて見てみましょう、誰からの電話でしょうか？

Which one is it?

どれなんだろう？

Is it the contraction of the verb to be or is it the possessive can you say?

to beという動詞の短縮形なのか、それともcan you sayという所有格なのか。

Who is calling?

誰が呼んでいるのか？

Does that work?

それはうまくいきますか？

Yes it does.

その通りです。

So it is the contraction of the verb to be, who is calling.

つまり、電話をかけているのは、to beという動詞の短縮形なのです。

Now a second example, well let's take our very first example whose mother is this?

さて、2つ目の例ですが、最初の例を見てみましょう。これは誰のお母さんでしょうか？

Which one is it?

どれなんだろう？

Is it the verb to be?

beという動詞でしょうか。

Or is it the possessive can you say?

それとも所有権のあるcan you say？

No, you can't.

It's incorrect.

It's the possessive whose mother is this?

It's my mother.

私の母です。

It's your mother.

お母さんだよ。

It's his mother.

それは彼の母親だ。

Okay, now one final example, who's in the house?

さて、最後の例ですが、家の中には誰がいますか？

It's obviously the verb to be.
