So for the last few days I've been registering researching, getting all the paperwork needed for for leo to go to the United States embassy here in Tokyo which is just a couple 100 m in this direction.

ここ数日は、レオが東京から数百メートルのところにあるアメリカ大使館に行くために必要な書類を揃え、登録や調査をしていた。

And I wanted to talk to you about the process for anybody who's who's here registering their baby for the birth and and getting the passport.

ここでは、出産のために赤ちゃんを登録したり、パスポートを取得したりする人のプロセスについてお話したいと思います。

It's kind of a some somewhat complicated process.

これはちょっと複雑なプロセスです。

We're joined here by court reporter.

Can I we're going to talk to you on the street corner for a few minutes because leo is getting a little bit hungry.

You're American almost six weeks.

アメリカ人はほぼ6週間ですね。

So they told me that the process in total it's gonna take about 6 6-8 weeks but probably quicker because I guess there's just not a lot of people applying for passports and whatnot.

彼らの話によると、手続きには全部で6～8週間かかるが、パスポートなどを申請する人が少ないので、おそらくもっと早いだろうとのこと。

There's two forms that you definitely need.

絶対に必要なフォームが2つあります。

One of them is the application and the other one is the passport application, the birth registration and the passport application after that.

1つは申請、もう1つはパスポート申請、出生届、その後のパスポート申請です。

It's very important to have supplemental information.

補足情報があることはとても重要です。

Um Can I had to go and get the um where'd you get the cost to the prosecutor han which is the family registration um at in taito ku.

あの......私は、検察官に支払う費用をどこで調達したかというと......台東区の戸籍謄本です。

Yeah and uh and joker in the word in which it's registered.

そして、登録されている単語の中で、「ああ」と「ジョーカー」。

So it's not even the one that you're living in.

だから、自分が住んでいるところでもないんです。

But the ward where it's registered at other supplementary documents included.

しかし、それが登録されている区は、他の補足文書が含まれています。

Um Our marriage certificate also his his uh birth certificate.

私たちの結婚証明書は、彼の......出生証明書でもあります。

The cool thing is that they ask for translations in japanese.

クールなのは、日本語で翻訳を求めてくることです。

They want you to translate the forms from japanese to english but they actually have templates for you to do that where you just have to fill in what you need to do.

彼らはフォームを日本語から英語に翻訳してほしいと言っていますが、実際にはテンプレートが用意されていて、必要事項を記入するだけでいいのです。

Um So it made it pretty painless and you didn't need to have it Notarized or anything like that.

そのため、公証人に依頼する必要もなく、簡単に手続きを行うことができました。

Now the supplementary information they want proof that you are actually residing in the United States or have resided for I think four or five years.

補足情報では、実際に米国に居住していること、または4、5年前から居住していることを証明する必要があります。

So I had my college transcript.

それで、大学の成績表を持っていました。

You know I uh he's curious.

彼は好奇心旺盛なんだよね。

I had my college transcript available and uh they didn't ask for it but the people before that it just depends on luck of the draw.

私は大学の成績証明書を用意していたので、要求されることはありませんでしたが、その前の人たちは運次第だと言っていました。

They might ask you for more supplementary information but we had everything just in case.

Um So I had to prove that I was a resident of the U.

And I had my birth certificate with me.

I had all these supporting documents.

私はこれらの裏付けとなる資料をすべて持っていました。

We made copies of everything but it didn't seem necessary to do that.

すべてをコピーしましたが、その必要はなかったようです。

It was actually quite fast I think overall the process took about 40 minutes.

全体では40分ほどで完成しました。

We were in and out.

私たちは出たり入ったりしていました。

We got here five minutes early we were sitting down and and uh waiting at exactly two o'clock which is our appointment Um after 15 minutes of waiting they called us up and one woman helped us prepare, Japanese lady helped us prepare behind the window, make sure all the forms are in order.

私たちは5分前に到着し、予約時間の2時ぴったりに座って待っていました。 15分ほど待っていると呼ばれ、1人の女性が準備を手伝ってくれました。

Then they passed that to an officer and the officer um went through all of them all of the supporting documents.

We've done everything in the um uh inside of the template in adobe.

So everything was was typed out and done really nicely.

I think they appreciated that.

Expedited the situation the circumstances and We were in and out.

Yeah 45 minutes which is pretty fast.

Hey Brandon is the house aloha So it's gonna take 5-6 weeks, maybe up to eight weeks for the passport to come.

But the registration of the birth.

Oh there was one other thing you remember tonight we had to huh?

So he was actually hungry and was getting the milk and we had to get while he was getting the milk.

That officer told us please bring leo up to the window.

So the three of us had to go up there and we had to raise our right hand and you get your right hand and and square that the information provided was the truth.

And um I guess we raised did we raise his right hand to I think we did and yeah it was pretty much over from there that that was the most important.

They brought us gave us back our passports.

We had to bring a letter pack, which is a prepaid envelope from Japan post, I think we, we didn't get the one that requires signatures.

We just got the el cheapo one and uh That was 370 N when they get all they have are original documents, the Kosecki and things like this, they'll put it into the envelope and send it back to us.

So um they don't keep your passport but other than that and as soon as he gets his passport and everything, he'll be an american citizen and and not have to not have to wait in the lines.

パスポートは保管してもらえませんが、それ以外はパスポートを取得すればすぐにアメリカ市民となり、行列に並ぶ必要もありません。

I don't think I can I wait in the lines anyways, she can come with me when we arrive in the United States were planning to go to, to fly back to new york on uh december 10th and we'll be away for a couple of weeks.

12月10日のフライトでニューヨークに戻り、2週間ほど留守にする予定なので、アメリカに着いたら彼女も一緒に行くことができます。

So we'll have some live streams, Leo's first trip to his to America to visit his grandparents.

レオの初めてのアメリカ旅行は、祖父母を訪ねるため。

But yeah, it was pretty to get all the paperwork together was actually really hard but I was surprised I didn't, we didn't really need all of it.

There's a checklist of just follow the checklist and it should be, should be a pretty painless experience.

The couple in front of us didn't have everything organized, so required a great deal of time and I think that they were there a little bit longer than us a lot longer.

Um and it made it harder so their interview was a lot longer to I think that the officer asked for more supporting details because we came in pretty organized.

We were in and out and um we didn't have a to to show as much documentation but the one asking me for the time I spent in the United States was really hard.

I was lucky.

I found an old transcript from Ohio State University that I I could prove that I was there for for four or five years getting to two.

I have a degree in economics and English literature and the grades were not that good in some of those biology classes.

Yeah so leo you can get an indian ceo card too because your grandma is indian she has, she was born in India.

So yeah you'll have access to go to India to.

That's gonna kind of cool because the visa to get for India is pretty pretty tough.

Um Well it all pretty happy um with situation is a proud moment when you register become an american citizen.
