Okay so before I teach you that,

let's first talk about what permission means.

When you want to ask someone if it's okay to do something, you're asking for permission.

誰かに何かをしてもいいかどうかを聞きたいときは、許可を求めることになります。

Okay again, you want to do something, you don't know if it's okay, so you ask someone.

また、何かをしたいと思っても、それがいいかどうかわからないから、誰かに聞いてみる。

For example, maybe you want to borrow something.

例えば、何かを借りたいとします。

Then you should ask someone.

じゃあ、誰かに聞いてみたら？

If you just take it that's stealing, right?

取ってしまえばそれは盗みですよね？

So you have to ask.

だから、聞かないといけない。

Is it okay? Alright?

大丈夫ですか？いいですか？

So there are three ways to ask for permission in English.

ですから、英語で許可を求めるには3つの方法があります。

The first way is to say, "Can I...?" "Can I...?" Okay.

第一の方法は、"Can I...?" と言うことです。"Can I...?"いいですよ。

The second way is "Could I...?" "Could I...?"

2つ目の方法は、"Could I...? "です。"Could I...?"

And the third way is, "May I...?" "May I...?" Okay.

そして3つ目の方法は、"May I...?" です。"May I...?"いいですよ。

So 'can I', 'could I', and 'may I' are all good

だから、「can I」、「could I」、「may I」はすべて良い。

But the third one, 'may I', is more polite. Okay.

でも、3つ目の「may I」の方がより丁寧です。なるほど。

So if you want to ask somebody who has more power,

だから、もっと力のある人に聞きたいなら

maybe your parents, may be your teacher,

ご両親かもしれませんし、先生かもしれません。

then you should say 'may I'.

の場合は、「may I」と言うべきです。

Maybe even to somebody that you don't know very well,

もしかしたら、あまり親しくない人にも。

it's better to say may I because again it's more polite.

と言えば、より丁寧な表現になります。

So let's look at these examples.

では、これらの例を見てみましょう。

Okay so I've written 'can I', 'could I', and 'may I'

さて、ここまで「can I」、「could I」、「may I」と書いてきました。

Remember, after these three, you have to say a verb.

この3つの後には、動詞を言わなければならないことを覚えておいてください。

Okay so let's look at the verbs.

では、動詞を見てみましょう。

'help' 'see' 'have' 'call' 'borrow' 'go' 'speak' and 'go' again.

助ける」「見る」「持つ」「呼ぶ」「借りる」「行く」「話す」「行く」の繰り返し。

Okay so I know I went through that a little bit quickly but

we're going to go through it slowly now.

Okay so here's what we'll do.

I'm going to read and try to switch some around. Okay?

So... "Can I help you?"

だから・・・"Can I help you?"

"Can I help you?"

"Can I help you?"

let's try that a little bit faster.

もうちょっと早くやってみよう。

"Can I help you?"

"Can I help you?"

"Can I help you?"

"Can I help you?"

Now remember, you can also say 'could I' and 'may I'.

また、「could I」や「may I」という言い方もできることを覚えておいてください。

For example, if you're walking through a department store,

例えば、デパートの中を歩いている場合。

and the salesperson comes to you,

と言って、販売員が来てくれます。

they would probably say, "May I help you?" because they want to be polite to the customer.

丁寧な対応をしたいので、「May I help you?

So again, "May I help you?"

そこでまた、"May I help you?"

Okay.

なるほど。

"Can I see you again?"

"Can I see you again?"

"Can I see you again?"

"Can I see you again?"

A little bit faster.

少しでも速く。

"Can I see you again?"

"Can I see you again?"

Maybe you like someone you met them and you like them

会ってみて好きになった人がいるかもしれません。

and you want to see them again next time,

で、次もまた見たいと思ってしまう。

So you say, "Can I see you again?"

それで、"Can I see you again? "と言うんですね。

Okay.

なるほど。

"Can I have some water?"

"Can I have some water?"

"Can I have some water?"

"Can I have some water?"

A little bit faster.

少しでも速く。

"Can I have some water?"

"Can I have some water?"

Okay.

なるほど。

Let's try a couple with 'could'.

could」を使ったカップルを試してみましょう。

"Could I call you later?"

"Could I call you later?"

"Could I call you later?"

"Could I call you later?"

Again, remember, you can use all three, but we're doing 'could'.

繰り返しになりますが、3つとも使うことができますが、ここでは「できる」としています。

"Could I call you later?"

"Could I call you later?"

"Could I borrow some money?"

"Could I borrow some money?"

Okay. You usually borrow money from a friend or somebody that you know,

なるほど、普通は友達や知り合いからお金を借りますよね。

so that's why it's better to say maybe 'can I' or 'could I'.

だからこそ、「can I」や「could I」と言った方がいいのです。

"Could I borrow some money?"

"Could I borrow some money?"

Okay.

なるほど。

"Could I go?"

"Could I go?"

"Could I go?"

"Could I go?"

You want to leave, so you're asking if it's okay.

帰りたいから「いいですか？

"Could I go?"

"Could I go?"

Okay and remember 'may I' is polite okay

OK、そして「may I」は丁寧語であることを忘れないでください。

you want to say that to someone who's a little bit more important,

は、ちょっとした人に言いたくなる。

maybe someone you don't know.

もしかしたら、あなたの知らない人かもしれません。

Again you would use 'may I'.

この場合も「may I」を使います。

So "May I speak to mr. Kim?"

だから "May I speak to mr.Kim?"

Maybe you called his office, okay, so you say,

多分、彼の事務所に電話したんだろう、よし、と。

"May I speak to mr. Kim?"

"May I speak to mr.Kim?"

And the last one -

そして、最後の1枚は

"May I go to the bathroom?"

"May I go to bathroom?"

This one is maybe if you're asking a teacher.

これは、先生に聞くならいいかも。

Right? You're in class and you have to go, you can ask a teacher

そうですね。授業中に行かなければならなくなったら、先生に聞いてみましょう。

"May I go to the bathroom?"

"May I go to bathroom?"

Again, 'can I' 'could' 'can' and 'could' are both okay.

繰り返しになりますが、「can I」「could」「can」「could」はどちらもOKです。

But maybe it's more polite....

でも、その方がより丁寧なのかもしれない....

If you want to be polite, you should say,

丁寧に言いたいなら、こう言えばいいのではないでしょうか。

"May I go to the bathroom?"

"May I go to bathroom?"

And I'm sure the teacher will like that better because you're being polite.

そして、先生もその方が礼儀正しいので気に入ってくれると思いますよ。

Okay. So...
