I'm your teacher, so great to have you here, and I've got a simple, little pronunciation video for you today.

It's simple, but it is confusing.

簡単ですが、間違えしやすいです。

Many people get this wrong, and this is the silent B, the silent /b/. Except it's not a /b/, because we do not say it.

多くの人がこれを間違えていますが、これは黙字のB、発音しない/b/のことです。ただし、/b/ではありません。私たちはそれを言いませんから。

And this is really common in words that end in "bt" or "mb".

これは 「bt 」や 「mb 」で終わる単語に本当によく見られます。

And I often hear people pronouncing the "b", but we actually don't say it at all.

また、よく「b」を発音する人がいますが、実際には全く発音しませんよ。

So, hopefully, that's a little bit easier for you.

Let's look at the first type with "bt"; a really common one is the word "debt".

最初に 、「bt 」を使ったタイプを見てみましょう。本当によく見られるのは、「debt 」という単語です。

Now, it looks like it's supposed to be /dɛbɪt/, something like that.

/dɛbɪt/のような感じになっているようですね。

But as you can tell, it's really, really difficult to pronounce a /b/ and a /t/ together.

しかし、お分かりのように、/b/と/t/を一緒に発音するのは、本当にとても難しいです。

So, we simply don't; we just say /dɛt/. I have do much debt.

そのため、私たちは単純に「/dɛt/, I have do much debt」と言います。

Another one, doubt /daʊt/.

もう1つ、doubt /daʊt/。

I have some doubts. Doubt.

疑うことがあります。Doubt。

And the final one, which is a little bit different, is "subtle", /sʌt(ə)l/.

そして、最後はちょっと違うのですが、/sʌt(ə)l/です。

We do not say /sʌbt(ə)l/, we say, /sʌt(ə)l/, /sʌt(ə)l/.

私たちは、/sʌbt(ə)l/とは言わず、/sʌt(ə)l/、/sʌt(ə)l/と言います。

Um, so, it kind of sounds like s-u-t-t-l-e, /sʌt(ə)l/.

えーと、だから、s-u-t-t-l-e、/sʌt(ə)l/ のような感じですね。

Okay, and onto the second type, which is the ones that end in "m-b", "mb".

さて、次に2つ目のタイプですが、これは「m-b」「mb」で終わるものです。

So many examples of these; one of them would be "bomb", /bɒm/.

これらの例はたくさんありますが、その一つが 「bomb 」で、/bɒm/です。

We don't say /bɒmb/, we say /bɒm/; ignore that "b" completely.

/bɒmb/とは言わず、/bɒm/と言い、「b」を完全に無視します。

Another one is "climb" /klaɪm/. I want to climb the mountain. Climb.

もう1つは「climb」/klaɪm/です。山に登りたい。Climb。

Here are some more: lamb, /lam/, a baby sheep, a lamb. 

ここではさらに、lamb, /lam/、子羊、 a lamb。

And another one with a "er" ending, plumber, /plʌmə/.

そしてもうひとつ、語尾に「er」がつくものとして、plumber、/plʌmə/があります。

A plumber is someone who works with water and pipes; not someone who eats plums. Plumber. 

Plumber は水やパイプを扱う人で、梅を食べる人ではありませんよ。 Plumber。

So, have some practice yourself and remember this rule with the "bt" and the "mb"; usually the "b" is silent.

このルールは、「bt 」と 「mb 」で覚えておいてください。この場合には通常、「b 」は発音しません。
