Wu Wei is literally translated as “not-doing”, “non-action”, or “inaction”.

Wu Weiは、直訳すると「やらないこと」、「不作為」、「無為」となります。

So when taken at face value, this seems to suggest that you can accomplish everything

これを額面通りに受け取ると、すべてのことを成し遂げることができるということになります。

by doing nothing.

何もしないことで

That doesn't make much sense obviously.

それは明らかにあまり意味のないことです。

So Wu Wei is often translated more loosely as “effortless action” or “unforced

そのため、Wu Weiは「楽な動作」や「無理のない動作」と、より緩やかに訳されることが多いです。

action”, but I prefer the term “sincere action”.

Everything, in my opinion, is achieved through sincere action.

To fully explore what that means, let's start with a thought experiment.

Imagine that you woke up in a small sailboat.

An ocean filled with thousands of other boats surrounds you, and there's no land in sight.

What do you do?

Do you follow the majority?

“You should stay with the majority,” a man says to you.

"君はマジョリティと一緒にいるべきだ "と、ある男性があなたに言います。

“There's great strength in numbers, and strength will get us to land.”

"数の上では大きな力があり、力があれば着陸することができる"

Or do you follow the minority?

それとも、少数派に従うのか？

“Pssst…you should stick with us,” a woman whispers.

"Pssst...あなたは私たちと一緒にいるべきよ "と女性が囁く。

“Large groups are full of fighting.

"大人数のグループは喧嘩ばかり。

We'll move faster as a minority, and speed will get us to land.”

少数派だからこそ動きが早く、スピードがあれば着地できる」。

Or perhaps you open your sails and let the wind and current take you wherever they lead.

あるいは、帆を広げて、風と流れに身を任せることもできる。

/There's no reason to follow anyone else/, you think.

/No one here actually knows the way to land, and even if they did, I can't verify it

So how does sincere action lead one to achieve everything?

To start, our actions arise from our understanding of the world.

So right actions depend on right understanding.

つまり、正しい行動は正しい理解に基づいているのです。

But obviously our understanding of the world is flawed and incomplete.

しかし、私たちの世界に対する理解は明らかに欠陥があり、不完全なものです。

So what's more important than understanding?

では、理解することよりも大切なことは何でしょうか？

Learning.

学習する。

We want our understanding to improve over time, and sincerity is necessary for learning.

私たちは、時間をかけて理解を深めていきたいと思っていますし、学ぶためには誠意が必要です。

Let me explain.

説明しましょう。

Learning is a natural process that occurs when a human is /involved/ in the world.

学習は、人間が世界に関わっているときに起こる自然なプロセスです。

I'm using the term /involved/ in a very specific way here.

ここでは「関与」という言葉を非常に具体的な意味で使っています。

/Involvement/ has two conditions: sincerity and feedback.

/Involvement/には、「誠意」と「フィードバック」という2つの条件があります。

Sincerity is when you act genuinely, in a way that seems best to you, in a way that's

誠意とは、自分にとって最も良いと思われる方法で、純粋に行動することです。

not dependent on external authority.

外部の権威に依存しない。

When you act sincerely, there's no one else to point the finger at.

誠実に行動していれば、誰にも指摘されることはありません。

All you can say is, “that's what I wanted.”

"それが欲しかったんだ "としか言いようがありません。

Feedback is when you're not sheltered from the consequences of your actions, for better

フィードバックとは、自分の行動の結果を良くも悪くも庇ってくれない時に

or worse.

Let's look at some practical examples.

Think about how easily you learn the mechanics of a video game.

Why is that the case?

Two reasons.

理由は2つ。

First, you're sincere in wanting to play and figure the game out.

まず、プレイしてゲームを理解したいという真摯な気持ちがあること。

Second, the game gives you feedback on your actions, allowing you to adjust your actions

2つ目は、自分の行動をフィードバックすることで、自分の行動を調整することができることです。

and learn the game.

とゲームを学ぶことができます。

So when sincerity and feedback exist, learning occurs naturally.

だから、誠意とフィードバックがあれば、自然に学習が行われる。

Now think about the last time you crammed for a test.

さて、最後にテストのために詰め込んだときのことを考えてみてください。

Maybe you weren't that into the course.

もしかしたら、そのコースにそれほど興味がなかったのかもしれません。

So there was no sincerity in your studying.

勉強に誠意がなかったということですね。

You studied because you felt you should to get a good job or please your parents.

勉強したのは、良い仕事に就くため、あるいは親を喜ばせるために必要だと思ったからです。

But you used flashcards to study, so there was feedback.

しかし、フラッシュカードを使って勉強したので、フィードバックがありましたね。

What happens when you have feedback without sincerity?

誠意のないフィードバックをするとどうなるか？

Basic memorization.

基本的な暗記事項。

Intellectualization.

知的化。

You may have memorized the facts for a test, but how long was it until you forgot them?

テストのために事実を暗記したかもしれませんが、それを忘れるまでにどれだけの時間がかかりましたか？

Feedback without sincerity doesn't lead to true learning.

誠意のないフィードバックは、真の学習にはつながりません。

Now think about a summer, perhaps when you were younger, where you spent your time doing

さて、あなたが若い頃、何かをして過ごした夏のことを考えてみてください。

nothing but playing games and eating junk food.

ゲームとジャンクフードしかしていない。

You might say, “Well that's what I would do again if I was really acting sincerely.

I would just play games and eat junk.

ゲームをしたり、ジャンクフードを食べたりしていました。

But I have to make myself do other things if I want to succeed.”

The problem here is not sincerity.

The problem here is a lack of real world feedback.

ここで問題となるのは、実世界でのフィードバックがないことです。

Someone who's sheltered from the consequences of playing video games and eating junk food

テレビゲームやジャンクフードを食べることで、その影響から守られている人

never learns to not do those activities because there's no real consequences for their actions.

そのような行為をしても、実際には何の影響もないので、そのような行為をしないように学習することはありません。

So sincerity without feedback results in no learning.

だから、フィードバックのない誠実さは、結果的に学びにならない。

So right action comes from right understanding.

ですから、正しい行動は正しい理解から生まれます。

Right understanding comes from learning.

正しい理解は学習から生まれる。

Learning comes from involvement in the world.

学びは世界との関わりから生まれる。

Involvement comes from sincere action and feedback.

インボルブメントは、誠実な行動とフィードバックから生まれます。

And to act sincerely is to live without wei or, in other words, to live Wu Wei.

そして、真摯に行動することは、無為に生きること、つまり、呉越同舟をすることです。

And to live Wu Wei, is to allow the winds and currents to take you, and so by “doing

そして、呉越同舟とは、風や流れに身を任せることであり、「やる」ことで

nothing”, you accomplish everything.

何もしない」ことで、「全てを成し遂げる」。
