I'm an Olympic rowing medalist, a former diplomat, now working in leadership development, and author of the book, The Long Win:  The Search for a Better Way to Succeed.

オリンピック ボート競技のメダリストで、元外交官でもあります　今はリーダーシップの育成に関わる仕事をしながら　本も書いています　『The Long Win: The Search for a Better Way to Succeed (長期的勝利：成功へのより良い道の摸索)』というものです　

These are my biggest lessons.

私から とても重要な教訓をご紹介します

My first lesson is to define success on your own terms.

1 つ目の教訓は　自分にとって成功とは何かを 明確にすることです

Too often, people define success around things that other people want, around external results, or trophies or targets.

ほとんどの場合　人は 他の人が求めているものを成功だと考えます　外面的な結果や、トロフィーとか、目標の達成です

It's important for us to think for ourselves what really matters.

私たちにとって大切なのは 何が本当に重要なのかを自分で考えることです

What has lasting value, when the results and the spreadsheets and the trophies have been won?

良い結果や業績、トロフィーを手に入れた時　何に永遠の価値があるのでしょうか？

What is it that's going to be important to you at that point?  

その時点で　皆さんにとって重要となることとは 何なのでしょうか？

Make sure you define success around that.

その辺を意識して　成功することの定義づけをしてください

My second lesson is to develop a constant learning mindset.

2 つ目の教訓は　学び続けようという心を 育むことです

Whether things are going well or less well, we can always learn.

ものごとが順調な時でも そうじゃない時でも　いつでも学ぶことはできます

As an Olympic athlete, we would review and learn after every race, whether we won or whether we lost because all we wanted to do was to keep improving, keep finding ways to go faster.

オリンピック選手だった頃は　大会後は毎回 見直しと学習を行いました　勝ったとしても、負けたとしても　とにかく私たちが望んでいたのは　向上し続けたい、速くなるための方法を探し続けたいということでしたから　

It helps us to be resilient. It helps us in performance. It helps us as leaders.

学ぶことで 立ち直りが早くなるし、実践でも役に立ちます　リーダーとしても役立ちます

We never have all the answers.

私たちは すべてを理解しているわけではありません

And in this fast-paced world of change, all we can do is to keep learning.

それに ものすごい速さで変化を続けるこの世界で 私たちができることは 学び続けることです

It's a lifelong journey of learning that we are all on.

私たちは 生涯続く学びの旅をしているんです

My third lesson is to prioritize relationships in everything that you do, we cannot succeed alone.

3 つ目の教訓は　何においても人間関係を優先させること　1 人きりでは 成功者になることはできません

So let's invest in relationships, first and foremost.

ですから　人との関わりに 力や時間を注ぎましょう 何よりも一番にね

Not as something that comes at the end of the day after we've done all of the tasks we have to do, but as the way that we do all of those tasks.

するべきことがすべて終わった後で 最終的に生まれる人間関係ではなく　すべての過程で生まれる人間関係です

Through each interaction, every meeting we have, every conversation, we have the opportunity to get to know someone.

それぞれの人との関わりを通じて、誰かに会うたび、誰かと会話をするたびに　私たちは 相手を知る機会を得ています

To get to know their perspective and to learn from them.

人の考え方を知ったり、相手から学ぶ機会です

As a diplomat, our whole business was about negotiating, influencing, persuading and working through relationships.

外交官としての仕事は全般的に　交渉を行ったり、働きかけたり、説得したり、人との関係を通じて活動することでした

Actually, in business, in everything that we do, we need to work to collaborate in order to explore what's possible.

実際、ビジネスでもすべてにおいて 協力して活動する必要があります　そうやって 何が可能かを摸索するのです

We need to make sure that our priority is relationships.

優先事項が人間関係だということを明確にしておかなくてはいけません

Put them first, and then we will be able to explore our potential.

そうすることで　可能性を切り開くことができるようになるのです

My fourth lesson is to avoid searching for magic formulas and to create your own.

4 つ目の教訓は　魔法の法則を探し求めることはせず　自分のやり方を作り出すことです

We often have this desire to seek out a magic formula, some list, something that's going to tell us how to achieve perfection.

私たちは よく 魔法の法則を見つけたいと願います　完璧にやり遂げる方法を教えてくれるリストみたいなものです

But actually, it's for us to create what's right for our family, for our teams, for our organizations, for the groups we're involved with.

でも実際は　私たちが作り出すものです　自分の家族やチーム、組織、自分が関わるグループにとって良いものをです

Let's avoid to trying to cookie cut and put a template onto something and actually search to find what's right, alongside those working with us.

クッキーの型抜きをするように同じものを作り出そうとするのではなくて　自分と一緒に活動する人たちに寄り添って　何が正しいのかを摸索してみましょう

My fifth lesson is to stay curious.

5 つ目の教訓は 好奇心を持ち続けること

To challenge the way that you think, your mindset, the assumptions that you bring to the decisions, to the choices, to the conversations you have every day.

日々の決断や選択、会話につながる 自分の考え方や意見、想定に物申すためです

Find out your biases.

自分が持つ先入観を知りましょう

Challenge those assumptions that you're making along the way, so that you can keep developing  your view of the world.

先入観を伴った想定に異議を唱えるんです　そうすれば自分の世界観を広げ続けることができます

Seek out others who have different views from you, and listen to them.

自分とは違う意見を持つ人を見つけて、その人の話に耳を傾けてください

That's the only way that we can create an environment in which we can really find who we are, but also allow those  alongside us to find out who they are too.

それが 本当の自分を見つけ出すことのできる環境を生み出すだけでなく　自分のかたわらにいる人達も 本当の彼らを見つけ出すことができる唯一の方法なのです
