They all mean 'at the same time' or 'in the middle of another action'.

いずれも「同時に」「他の動作の途中で」という意味です。

But we use them in different ways.

しかし、私たちはそれらを異なる方法で使っています。

Let me give you an example.

一例を挙げてみましょう。

We'll start with 'during' (ˈdʒʊərɪŋ) or 'during' (ˈdjʊərɪŋ).

まずは「during」（ˈdʒʊərɪŋ）や「during」（ˈdjʊərɪŋ）から始めます。

Both pronunciations are fine, doesn't matter how you pronounce it.

どちらの発音も正しく、どちらでも問題ありません。

But, in a sentence, there must be a noun after the word 'during'.

しかし、文の中では、「during」の後に名詞がなければなりません。

I pronounce it 'dʒʊərɪŋ'.

私は 'dʒʊərɪŋ'と発音します。

For example, I want to say, 'I hate people who talk in the middle of movies.'

例えば、『映画の途中で話をする人は嫌いだ』と言いたいとします。

It's very annoying. Don't do it.

とても迷惑ですよね。やめてください。

But, I replace 'in the middle of' with 'during'.

しかし、私は「in middle of」を「during」に置き換えています。

It means the same thing.

それは同じ意味です。

And after we have that noun: 'movies'.

そして、その後には「映画」という名詞があります。

That's perfect! This is a good sentence! It's great!

完璧です！これは良い文章です！素晴らしいです！

You're beautiful!

君は美しい！

Beautiful sentence.

綺麗な文章だ。

But how about 'while'? It means the same thing.

でも、「while」はどうでしょう？意味は同じです。

Can I replace 'during' with 'while'?

「during」を「while」に置き換えられるでしょうか？

No!

だめです！

If I say, "I hate people who talk while movies", this is a rubbish sentence.

もし「I hate people who talk while movies」と言ったら、これはゴミのような文章になる。

You can't say that.

そうは言えません。

So, how do we use 'while'?

では、「while」はどう使えば良いのでしょうか？

With 'while', you need a clause, a subject and a verb, a sentence.

「while」では、主語と動詞である節、文章が必要です。

So, let's imagine you're in bed, you're trying to sleep, and then all of a sudden...

想像してみてください。ベッドで寝ようとしているときに、突然...

You hear a loud noise.

大きな音が聞こえました。

So, in the middle of trying to sleep, you heard a noise, there was an interruption.

寝ようとしている最中に音がして、邪魔されてしまったわけです。

'While I was trying to sleep I heard a noise.'

「寝ようとしていたら、音が聞こえてきた」

And it doesn't matter where you put this sentence.

そして、この文章をどこに置いても良いです。

It could be first, it could be after, like: I heard a noise while I was trying to sleep.

最初かもしれないし、後かもしれない。「I heard a noise while I was trying to sleep.」のように。

That's fine, it doesn't matter where you put it.

これは大丈夫。どこに置いても良いですから。

Also, notice the subject is the same in both sentences.

また、どちらの文章も主語が同じであることに注目してください。

While 'I' was trying to sleep, 'I' heard a noise.

「私」が寝ようとしているとき、「私」は物音を聞いた。

In this case, you don't need to repeat the subject in the 'while' sentence.

この場合、「while」のある文章で主語を繰り返す必要はありません。

So we could have: 'While trying ... '

ですから、「while trying...」と言えます。

We'd actually remove the 'be' verb for continuous tenses.

連続した時制のときには「be」の動詞を削除します。

Doesn't matter if it's 'was' in past continuous or 'is' in present.

過去進行形の「was」でも、現在進行形の「is」でも関係ありません。

And the subject, of course, if it's the same.

そしてもちろん主語も。もし同じものなら。

So it could read, 'while trying to sleep, I heard a noise'.

つまり、「while trying to sleep, I heard a noise（寝ようとしているときに、音が聞こえた）」

Or of course, 'I heard a noise while trying to sleep.'

もしくは、もちろん「I heard a noise while trying to sleep（寝ようとしているときに、音が聞こえた）」と言えます。

That's fine too.

これも大丈夫です。

But, if you remove the 'subject' and the 'be verb', then it definitely definitely sounds more formal.

しかし、「主語」と「be動詞」を取り除くと、間違いなくフォーマルな響きになります。

So, keep that in mind - if you're trying to speak formally that sounds great.

これを覚えておいてください。もしあなたがフォーマルに話そうとしているなら、それは適しています。

But in casual conversation, it's much more common not to do that.

しかし、カジュアルな会話では、そうしないことの方が多いです。

I would more commonly say: 'Oh my god, last night while I was trying to sleep, I heard a noise ... it made me cry.'

私は通常はもっと、「なんてこった、昨日の夜、寝ようとしているときに音が聞こえて......泣いてしまった」みたいに言います。

Should we use 'while' only with continuous tenses?

「while」は進行形の時だけに使うべきなのでしょうか？

No, not necessarily.

いいえ、必ずしもそうではありません。

Let me give you an example: 'I played drums while she slept.'

例を挙げてみましょう。『I played drums while she slept（彼女が寝ている間にドラムを叩いていた）』

This is not a continuous tense.

これは進行形ではありません。

This is a past simple.

これは過去形です。

How about a present simple? Let's try that!

では現在形は？試してみましょう！

'She eats ice cream while I work'

彼女は私が仕事をしている間、アイスクリームを食べる。

Or the other way: 'While I work, she just eats ice cream.'

もしくは：私が仕事をしている間、彼女はただアイスクリームを食べているだけだ。

This is a present simple tense, so it doesn't have to be past.

これは現在形ですから、過去形である必要はないのです。

Doesn't have to be past continuous, it can be anything, just know that 'while' means 'in the middle of this', 'this happens" or 'at the same time as this', 'this happens'.

過去進行形でなくても、何でも構いません。ただ、「while」は「in the middle of this（これの最中に）」、「this happens（これが起こる）」、もしくは「at same time as this（これと同じ時に）」、「this happens（これが起こる）」という意味だと知っておいてください。

That's how you use it.

これが使い方です。

But how about 'meanwhile'?

では「meanwhile」はどうでしょう？

is that the same thing? it sounds the same.

それは同じものですか？同じように聞こえますよね。

How do I use that?

どのように使うのでしょう？

Well, this also means 'at the same time', but more commonly, it's used to talk about two different locations, two completely different subjects.

これは、「同時に」という意味もありますが、より一般的には、2つの異なる場所、2つの全く異なる対象について話すときに使われます。

For example:

たとえば

'In one city Superman was flying and saving the world.'

「ある都市ではスーパーマンが空を飛び、世界を救っていた」

At the same time in a different city - Or we could say 'meanwhile!'

別の都市で同じ時間に。あるいは「meanwhile」と言うこともできます。

Remember, 'meanwhile' means 'at the same time' but in a different thing.

「meanwhile」は「同時に」という意味ですが、別のものの中であることを覚えておいてください。

So, 'Superman was flying and saving the world.'

ですから、「ある都市ではスーパーマンが空を飛び、世界を救っていた」

'Meanwhile, in Gotham (in a different place), Batman was crying.'

「一方、ゴッサムでは（別の場所）バットマンが泣いていた。」
