Today we're looking at 'How to tell the time'.

今日は「時間の伝え方」についてご紹介します。

First of all, how do we ask what the time is?

まず、時間はどう聞くのでしょうか？

It's very simple.

それはとてもシンプルです。

So, if someone's asked you 'What time is it?' what are you going to say in response?

もし「今、何時ですか？」と聞かれたら、何と答えればいいのでしょう？

If the clock is on the hour then you can very simply say: 'It's three o'clock.' 'It's three o'clock.'

時計がある時間ちょうどになっていれば、ごく簡単に「3時です」と言えます。「It's three o'clock（3時です）」

However, if you want to specify between morning or afternoon, then you can say 'it's three p.m.'.

しかし、午前か午後かを明確にしたい場合は、「It's three p.m.（午後3時です）」となります。

'P.M.' is for any time between noon and midnight.

「P.M.」は正午から深夜までの時間を表します。

'A.M.' is for anytime between midnight and noon.

「A.M.」は午前0時から正午までの間です。

If the time shows anything between the hour and half past the hour, we use the word 'past'.

時間がある時間ちょうどから30分までの間を示している場合は、「past」という言葉を使います。

So, we have five past.

これは5分。

Ten past.

10分。

Quarter past.

15分。

Twenty past.

20分。

Twenty-five past.

25分。

And half past. 'Half past.'

そして、30分です。

So, did you notice, actually that the only thing that was slightly odd there was when we got to the quarter.

気づいたでしょうか？実は、15分になったとき、少しだけおかしかったことがあります。

Fifteen minutes past.

15分。(fifteen minutes past)

Sometimes we will say fifteen minutes past, but it's easy enough to say 'quarter past'.

「Fifteen minutes past」と言うこともありますが、「quarter past」と言うのが簡単です。

It's a quarter of the entire circle.

円全体の4分の1ですから。

It's quarter past.

これは、15分です。

Now, anything between the half past position, and back to the hour, we are going to look at 'to'.

さて、30分の位置から次の時間に戻るまでの間にあるものは、「to」を使います。

So the word we use is 'to'.

使われる言葉は「to」です。

So we move around.

動かしてみましょう。

Twenty-five to.

25分前。

Twenty to.

20分前。

Quarter to.

15分前。

Now we very rarely say 'fifteen minutes to'.

「fifteen minutes to」というのはかなり稀です。

Very rarely!

かなり稀ですよ！

Ten to.

10分前。

Five to.

5分前。

Four o'clock.

4時ちょうど。

Now there are many variations in how you can tell the time.

時間を伝える方法には様々なバリエーションがあります。

Some people like to use the twenty- four-hour clock.

24時間表示の時計を好む人もいます。

So instead of '6:30 p.m.,' you might get 'It's 18:30'.

つまり、「6:30 p.m.」の代わりに「18:30」というのです。

And Instead of '5:25 a.m.' you might get 'It's 05:25'.

また、「5:25 a.m.」ではなく、「05:25」と言われることもあります。

Just remember that in the beginning half of the hour we say 'past'.

ただ、30分まででは「past」と言っていることを覚えておいてください。

In the last half of the hour we say 'to'.

その次の30分は、「to」を使います。

'Past' and 'to'.

「past」と「to」です。

Oh, look at the time!

あら、時間を見て！
