Four of us started this serviced accommodation business

4人で宿泊事業を始めました

in the heart of Kyoto,

consisting of restored Kyoto townhouses or machiya.

The first two buildings that we invested in are over 100 years old.

最初に投資した2軒の建築物で、100年以上の歴史があります

They have seen many people.

その建築物は沢山の人々を見てきました

They have had the experience of many people living in them.

今まで大勢の人々が住んでいました

Kyoto was one of the places in Japan

京都がその内の一つです

that was spared the bombings in WWII.

戦争で空襲を受けなかった日本の地域

Many parts of Kyoto are very well-preserved.

そのため、沢山の建築物がきれいに保たれています

This is the heritage that

その文化遺産の一つを

we have a privilege of being a part of

光栄に思います

as owners of real estate in Kyoto.

京都のオーナーとして所有できることを

This is the part that really appealed to me.

このため京都の不動産への投資はとても魅力的なのです

If we want to do something, we have to do it well.

I suppose it wouldn't be a stretch to say that

Previous renovations and refurbishments

were done probably in the 70s or 80s.

They actually drilled away the timber beam

木造ばりに穴が開きました

to create a space for the gas pipe to go through.

Then we said, okay.

「これはまずい」

We need to do something about that.

「なんとかしないと」と思ったんですね

The craftsmen actually not only

職人さんたちは実際に

carved out a piece of wood

木材を切り

for the entire length of that beam

穴の形と長さに合わせて

that could fit in just like a Jenga block.

ジェンガのように穴を埋めました

They actually sanded it down and

そして、きれいに研磨して

varnished the entire beam

保護塗料を全体に塗って

such that it looked like one perfect beam.

完璧に木造ばりを直してくれました

To top it all off,

it's actually hidden by a false wall today.

ふかし壁まで作って隠しました

Japan has an onerous taxation system.

日本の税制は厄介です

There are many instances where

the beneficiaries would have to end up demolishing old buildings

because they had to raise funds to pay the inheritance taxes.

We thought that it would be meaningful

Given that foreign travel is non-existent,

we've also worked hard

to pivot towards other sources of demands.
