In this video we're going to be looking at the difference between /n/ and /ŋ/.

今回の動画では /n/ と /ŋ/ の違いについて見ていきますよ

Let's start off with the first sound /n/, okay?

まずは 最初の /n/ の音から始めましょう いいですか？

This is a nasal sound, /n/.

これは 鼻音の /n/

So, the sound essentially travels out of your nose.

つまり この音は基本的に鼻から音を出しています

You put the tip of your tongue up to the top of your mouth - if you want to be really specific, very close to your alveolar ridge.

舌先を口の中の上の方につけます　もっと詳しく言うなら 歯槽堤 (しそうてい：上前歯の歯茎) の辺りです

So, it's not on the roof of your mouth, it's not the palate.

つまり 口の上側の部分 口蓋 (こうがい) ではありません

It's a little bit kind of between your teeth and the alveolar ridge.

上前歯と歯槽提の間といった感じでしょうか

You touch that /n/ and you hold it, /n/.

舌をその部分に触れさせて /n/　そのまま /n/

Now the other sound, /ŋ/, is further back.

では　もう 1 つの音 /ŋ/ は もっと口の奥の方です

Again, it's another nasal sound, so the sound travels out of your nose.

これも 鼻音なので 鼻から音を出します

Now many languages don't have this sound, so I want you to image that you're pronouncing a /g/, /g/, as in "go", "goat", okay?

さて この音がない言語もたくさんあります　なので /g/ と発音している感じを想像してください　"go" とか "goat" の /g/ のような感じです

But, you don't release it, you hold it.

ただし 最後まで発音しませずに 止めてください

So, take "go", /ŋ/, you hold it /ŋ/, that's the sound you need.

つまり "go" なら /ŋ/ 　最後まで言わずに /ŋ/　これが出すべき音です

Let's have a look at some minimal pairs and you can compare the difference.

では 最小対語 (1音だけ異なる単語の組み合わせ) を見てみましょう 違いを比べられますからね

Just listen and repeat: sin, sing, win, wing.

とにかく よく聞いて 繰り返して言ってみてください　/sɪn/ /sɪŋ/　/wɪn//wɪŋ/

And the last ones: ban, bang.

そして最後に 1 つ　/ban/ /baŋ/

Now just a quick note before we look at some sentences: Be really careful with that /ŋ/ sound and that you're not releasing it.

では 例文の前にちょっとした注意です　 /ŋ/ の発音の際はよく気をつけて 最後まで音を出さないようにしましょう

So don't say sing-a, bang-a, okay? Cause, erm, yeah, that's not how we say it.

つまり /sinグ/ とか /banグ/ とならないように そんなふうには発音しないので

So now let's have a look at some sentences.

さて 例文を見ていきましょう

Her son sung a song. Her son sung a song.

/həː sʌn sʌŋ ə sɒŋ /　（彼女の息子は歌を歌った）

Song also has that /ŋ/ sound at the end too.

"song" にも 最後に /ŋ/ の 音がありますね

How about another one.

もう 1 つ見てみましょう

Bung the bun in the oven. Bung the bun in the oven.

/bʌŋ ðə bʌn ɪn ðɪ ʌv(ə)n/　(丸パンをオーブンにぶっこんで)

Now, to bung is an informal British way of saying to put or to throw something somewhere in a very careless way.

さて "bung" とはイギリスの口語で 何かをどこかに乱暴に「入れる」とか「投げる」という意味です

So, in this context, we're basically saying, just put in the bun in the oven, carelessly.

ですから 要するにこの場合は ただ 丸パンをオーブンに入れてと言ってるんです 乱暴にね
