In today's video, I'd like to show you how an escalator works.

今日の動画では、どうやってエスカレーターが動いているのかを、紹介したいと思います。

It's hard to imagine the modern world without the escalator.

エスカレーターの存在しない世界を想像するのは難しいですよね。

It was initially called the revolving stairs.

最初のころは、"revolving stairs (回転する階段)" と呼ばれていました。

The first idea can be traced back to 1859.

最初のアイデアは1859年にまでさかのぼります。

But it was a few more decades until we had our first working escalator.

しかし、初めてエスカレーターが登場するのは、数十年後でした。

Since then, society has come to heavily depend on these machines.

登場してから、社会はエスカレーターの存在に 大きく依存するようになりました。

The escalator is most useful in places where there are large amounts of people to move, such as airports, shopping malls, and subway systems.

エスカレーターは移動する人が多い場所で役に立ちます。例えば、空港、ショッピングモール、地下鉄などです。

Elevators can only move so many people, even if there are several of them.

エレベーターは、利用客が少なくても多くの人を運べるようになっています。

But if the same space is used for escalators, we can move a lot more people through.

ですがエレベーターをエスカレーターに置き換えれば、 多くの人を効率よく移動させることができます。

Of course there's usually an elevator nearby for those that can't use the escalator.

もちろん、エスカレーターを利用できない人の為に、近くにはエレベーターがあります。

You'll usually find at least two escalators alongside each other.

普通、二つのエスカレーターがこんな感じで並んでいますよね。

One going up and the other going down.

片方がのぼり、片方がくだりといった感じで。

They can extend from multiple levels.

色々なレイアウトがあります。

Sometimes to save space, they'll be arranged in a crisscross pattern.

スペースの節約の為に、立体にクロスしたものもよく見られますし、

But the layout will change depending on the needs of the place.

その建物等の環境に応じて、レイアウトは様々です。

Some escalators might need to be longer or shorter depending on the height of the next floor.

一部のエスカレーターは、次の回までの長さに応じて長くなったり短くなったりします。

Maybe they'll need to be wider to fit more people, or several escalators might need to be right next to each other.

もっと多くの人に対応するために、広くしたり、たくさん設ける必要もあるでしょう。

Sometimes stairs are in the middle for those that want to walk.

また、自分の足で移動したい人の為に、真ん中に階段が設置されている場合もあるでしょう。

And on some occasions, the escalators will all be pointed in the same direction.

場合によっては、全てが同じ方向のみの場合もあります。

This helps when you want to direct the flow of traffic towards the exit.

これは、流れを出口に向かわせたいときに役立ちます。

Let's not forget the variations, such as the moving sidewalks or even the spiral escalators.

色んなバリエーションがあることも覚えておきましょう。たとえば「動く歩道」とか、「カーブするエスカレーター」とか。

Yes, they really do have these.

ええ、実際にこんなのがありますよ。

But for this video, let's take a look inside of a regular escalator.

でも、この動画では中身を見てみましょう。

There's a series of individual steps that make up the moving stairs.

階段を構成する、 ステップというものがあります。

They have ridges on the top and are sometimes made out of rubber so that they have better grip.

ギザギザになっていて、グリップ力を高めるために、ゴム製のものもあります。

The steps are painted yellow around the edge to encourage passengers not to stand too close to the edge.

黄色い線がふちにあります。 これは、利用者が端に近づかないよう促しています。

These steps stay flat while they're on top and it's a good thing, too.

これらステップは、上にある時は平らです。これはいいね。

Each step has two wheels on the bottom to guide it as it moves along.

ステップの下の両端には、二つの車輪があります。正常に動くための案内輪です。

Then we have what's called the step chain.

次に、ステップチェーンと呼ばれるものがあります。

This attaches to the top of each step.

これは各ステップの上部につきます。

Now all we need is a track system to guide these wheels.

必要なのは、これらの車輪をガイド(案内)するトラックシステムだけです。

The step chain rolls along the top here, and the bottom wheels roll along this track.

ステップチェーンはこのトラックに沿って動きます。下の車輪はこのトラックに沿って転がります。

The positioning of these tracks is what keeps the steps level.

これらのトラックの配置は、ステップの位置を維持するためのものです。

Let's just focus on one of the steps as it comes down.

ひとつの降りてくるステップの動きを見てみましょう。

You can see what would happened at this bottom wheel was just a little bit higher, the step would no longer be flat.

下の車輪の動きを見てみますね。トラックと車輪がないと、こうなっちゃいますよね。これらがあることで、平らになるのです。

Once we get to the end, the steps flip over and come around the other side.

最後まで来ると、 ステップが反転し、反対側に回ります。

The same thing happens once we get back to the top here.

何度も回って同じことを繰り返します。

The escalator motor is usually up at the top, it has to move this axle and two big gears that pull the step chain.

モーターは、たいてい上にあります。この車軸と、ステップチェーンを引っ張るこの大きなギアを動かす必要があります。

Now we just connect it with more gears and a roller chain.

あとは、ギアとチェーンを繋げるだけです。

Now comes a few more gears.

さらにいくつかのギアが追加されます。

These are connected by another small chain underneath.

これらは、下にある別の小さなチェーンによって接続されています。

This is what moves the handrail.

これが手すりを動かします。

It's really important that the handrail move at the exact same speed as the steps.

All of these parts are placed inside a strong metal frame which is called the truss.

At the top and bottom of the escalator is what we call the comb plate.

エスカレーターの上部と下部には、コームプレートと呼ばれるものがあります。

The steps go right underneath as their ridges fit close together.

ステップは、それらの隆起が互いにぴったり合うように移動します。

If the ridges weren't there, it would be much easier for something to get stuck.

これがなければ、動きにくくなってしまいます。

But either way, just remember that it's never a good idea to play around an escalator.

しかし、どちらにしても、エスカレーターで遊ぶのはダメですので忘れないように。
