What's up, guys? My name is Shane, and by the end of this video, you will know how to use adjectives that end with 'ED' and adjectives that end with 'ING'.  

皆さん、いかがお過ごしですか？僕はシェーン。この動画が終わるまでに、"ed" や "ing" で終わる形容詞の使い方を知ることができますよ。

A lot of adjectives are like this: They have two forms, one ends with 'ING' and the other ends with 'ED'.

形容詞の多くにはこのような 2 つの形があります。"ing" で終わるか、"ed" で終わる形。

Okay, let's look at 'ED' adjectives first, and make sure you watch until the end of the video because there will be a quiz to test your understanding.

では、"ed" で終わる場合を先に見ていきましょう。必ず動画を最後までご覧ください。理解度を試すクイズが待っていますよ。

'I am so bored.' What am I talking about here?

「僕はすごく退屈だ(＝退屈に感じている)。」ここでは、何について話しているでしょう？

Am I describing the situation? No. 

その場の状況について説明していますか？ いいえ。

Am I talking about how I feel on the inside? Yes.  

心の中の気持ちについて話していますか？そうですね。

So that's why we use 'ED' adjectives to talk about feelings.

僕たちは、 "ed" で終わる形容詞を使って、「気持ち」について話します。

Another example: 'He is so excited. He is getting a new phone today.'

例文をもう 1 つ。「彼はすごく興奮しています(＝興奮を感じている)。今日、新しい電話を受け取るんです。」

Am I describing the phone? No.

電話について説明していますか？いいえ。

Am I describing the situation?  No.

その場の状況について説明していますか？いいえ。

Am I talking about how he feels on the inside?  Yes.

彼が心の中で感じていることについて話していますか？はい。

So again, we use 'ED' adjectives to talk about feelings.

ここでもう一度。僕たちは "ed" で終わる形容詞を使って、「気持ち」について話します。

One more example: 'They are really interested in learning languages.'

例文をもう 1 つ。「彼らは言語を学ぶことに本当に興味を持っている(＝興味を感じている)。」

What am I talking about here? Am I describing a language or languages? No.  

ここでは何について話していますか？言語について説明していますか？いいえ。

Am I talking about how they feel on the inside about languages? Yes.

彼らが心の中でどんなふうに感じているかについて話していますか？そうです。

So that's why we use 'ED'. It's really easy, right?  

だから "ed" (で終わる形容詞) を使うんです。本当に簡単でしょ？　

'ED' and feelings.

"ed" と「気持ち」の組み合わせ。

That movie last night was so interesting. What am I talking about here?  

「昨夜のあの映画はすごく興味を引くものだった。」 ここでは何について話しているでしょう？

Am I talking about how I felt about the movie? No. 

映画について、僕がどのように感じたかを話していますか？いいえ。

Am I talking about the movie? Am I describing the movie? Yes.

その映画について話していますか？その映画の説明をしていますか？そうです。

So, that's why we use 'ING' adjectives to describe something.

僕たちは、"ing" で終わる形容詞を使って、物事の説明をするんです。

Another example: 'It's so exciting. He is getting a new phone today.' 

例文をもう 1 つ。「すごく楽しみ(な状況)だね。彼は今日、新しい電話を受け取るんです。」

What am I talking about? Am I talking about him?  No.

何について話しているでしょうか？彼について話していますか？いいえ。

Am I talking about the phone?  No.

電話について話していますか？いいえ。

I am talking about the situation.  

その状況について話しています。

I am describing the situation of him getting a new phone - It's very exciting.

彼が新しい電話を受け取るという状況の説明をしているんです。- すごく楽しみ(な状況)だ。

And one more example: 'He never goes out. He never says anything. He is a very boring person.'

例をもう 1 つ。「彼は出かけることもないし、何も話さない。彼はとても退屈な人だ。」

What am I talking about here?

ここでは何について話しているでしょうか？

Am I talking about how he feels? No.

彼の気持ちについて話していますか？いいえ。

Am I describing him, what he is like? Yes.

彼がどんな人なのかを説明していますか？そうですね。

So that's why we use 'ING' adjectives: We use 'ING' adjectives to describe something or someone.

だから僕たちは "ing" で終わる形容詞を使うんです。"ing" で終わる形容詞を使って物や人について説明をするんです。

So in summary, 'ED' for feelings, 'ING' to describe something or someone.

まとめると、"ed" は気持ちを表し、"ing" は物や人を説明する、ということです。

Now, let's have a little quiz to test your understanding.

ではここで、ちょっとしたクイズをやって、理解度を確かめましょう。

Question number one: I've got nothing to do today. I'm so 'bored' or 'boring'?  

問題①(どちらか選んでください)： 「今日、何もすることがない。僕はすごく(退屈している状態だ/退屈な人間だ)。 "bored"か"boring"か？」

And the correct answer is: 'I'm so bored.' 

正解は、「僕はすごく退屈している」"bored." です。

Why? Because we are talking about my feelings, how I feel on the inside.

なぜか？それは、僕の気持ち、僕が心の中でどう感じているかについて話しているからです。

Number two: I've got nothing to do today. It's so 'bored' or 'boring'?  

問題②：「今日僕は、何もすることがない。それはとても(退屈している状態だ/退屈なことだ)。"bored" か？"boring"か？ 」

And the correct answer is: 'It's so boring.'  

正解は、「それはとても退屈なことだ」"boring." です。

Why? Because I'm not talking about my feelings, I am talking about the situation.

なぜか？それは、僕の気持ちについて話しているのではなく、その状況について話しているからです。

The situation of having nothing to do is so boring.

何もすることがない状況が、とても退屈なことだということです。

Question number three: My new teacher at school is very 'interested' or 'interesting'? He has lived in many different countries.

問題③：「僕の学校の新しい先生はとても(関心がある状態だ/面白い) "interested" か？ "interesting"か？彼は様々な国で暮らしたことがある。」

And the correct answer is: 'My new teacher at school is very interesting.'

正解は、「僕の新しい学校の先生はとても面白い」"interesting" です。

Why? Because I am describing him. I am talking about his personality.

なぜかというと、僕が彼について説明しているから。彼の性格について話しているからです。

Number four: I feel so 'annoyed' or 'annoying'? I just can't solve this problem.  

問題④：「僕はとても(イライラした状態だ/イライラさせる人間だ)。"annoyed" か？ "annoying" か？ この問題を解決できない。」

And the correct answer is: 'I feel so annoyed.' 

正解は、「僕はとてもイライラした状態だ」"annoyed" です。

Why? Because we are talking about feelings.  

どうしてか？気持ちについて話しているから。

Last question, question number five: That workout was very 'tiring' or 'tired'?  

最後、問題⑤：「あの練習はとても(疲れさせるものだった/疲れた状態だった)。"tiring" か？" tired" か？"」

And the correct answer is: 'That workout was really tiring.'

正解は、「あの練習はとても疲れさせるものだった」"tiring" です。

Why? Because we're not talking about my feelings, your feelings, his feelings. We are describing the workout.

なぜか？それは、僕の気持ちでも、あなたの気持ちでも、彼の気持ちについて話しているのでもないから。その練習の説明をしているからです。

Remember, when you're using adjectives, always ask yourself:  'Am I talking about feelings, or am I describing something?'
