In each episode, we look at some Japanese words

各エピソードでは、いくつかの日本語の単語に注目し、

and figure out what we actually say in English.

英語で実際に何と言うかを理解していきます。

So, let's get started!

それでは始めていきましょう。

In Japanese, it's called レンジ

日本語では、レンジと言いますよね

but in English, we say microwave.

でも英語では、microwave と言います

If you said レンジ in England or  another English-speaking country

もしイングランドや英語圏の国で、レンジと言ったら

we probably don't know what you're talking about.

恐らく、誰も何のことだか分からないと思います。

However, while the words are very different

しかし、この２つの単語は全然異なりますが、

I can actually understand where  the confusion has come from.

私は、この誤解がどのように生じたか理解できます。

So, a range is technically an  oven which has hobs attached

range というのは厳密にいうと、ガスコンロがついたオーブンのことなんです。

and an oven is where the hobs are not attached.

オーブンというのは、ガスコンロが付いていないものです。

Actually, in England maybe everyone has a range

実際イングランドでは、恐らく誰でも range を持っていますが、

but we tend to use the word oven anyway.

みんなこれをオーブンと呼ぶことがほとんどです。

I didn't know what a range was until  i did a little bit of research.

今回調べてみて、レンジとは何か初めて知りました。

So, if you're talking about this it's microwave

つまり、もしこれの話をしているなら、microwave

and this is oven.

これだったら、oven です。.

At first, I had no idea where this  Japanese-English word had come from.

初めて聞いた時、このカタカナ英語の由来が全く分かりませんでした。

It sounds like nothing I  would ever say in English.

英語に全然聞こえないからです。

In fact, the only word I can kind of hear

実際、なんとなく聞こえるのは、

is the word kiss

kiss という単語だけです。

and i thought maybe that's because  the two parts come together

多分この２つの部分が近づいて、

and they kind of kiss.

キスするみたいだから？だと思いました。

But actually, after doing a little bit of research

でも少し調べてみたら、

I realized why I actually  don't know this word at all.

何故この単語を全然知らないのか分かりました。

It comes from E.H. Hotchkiss

E.H. Hotchkiss という名前が由来のようで、

who was an American stapler maker.

この方はアメリカ人で、ホチキスを作っていた人だったんです。

The staplers were first imported to Japan in 1903

ホチキスは、1903年に初めて日本へ輸入され、

and I guess that's where the name has come from.

恐らく、こうしてホチキスという名前になったんだと思います。

You might be surprised to learn that  this happens in quite a lot of languages.

意外かもしれませんが、こういうことは色々な言語で起こります。

For example, in England we  don't say vacuum cleaner.

例えば、イングランドでは、掃除機のことをvacuum cleaner とは言いません。

We say hoover.

hoover と言います。

Hoover is just a brand name.

Hoover というのはブランドの名前なんです。

However, if you want your English to be understood

しかし、あなたの英語を理解してもらうには、

it's important that you call this a stapler.

これをstapler と呼ぶ必要があります。

This one always confuses me

次の単語は、いつも紛らわしくて、

and it's something you  should really be careful of.

特に気を付ける必要がある単語です。

This is ice.

これは、ice です。

If you go to a dessert shop and ask for ice

もしデザート屋さんに行って、ice を頼んだら、

you can imagine what you're gonna get

何が出てくるか想像できますよね。

and if you ask for chocolate  ice, that's even weirder.

もし chocolate ice を頼んだら、むしろもっと変でしょう。

So, if you want this, you really  need to use the word ice cream

つまり、これが欲しい場合は、絶対にice cream と言わなきゃダメです。

and if you want this, you should say ice.

これが欲しい場合は、ice で大丈夫です。

As a side note, if you want  a delicious Gari-Gari Kun

補足ですが、もし美味しいガリガリ君とか、

or something like this

こんな感じのものが欲しい場合は、

you should say ice lolly.

ice lolly と言う必要があります。

It's a little confusing so  let me break it down for you.

少し紛らわしいと思うので、分かりやすく説明すると、

This is ice cream

これは、 ice cream

ice cream

ice cream

probably ice cream

これも恐らく ice cream

ice lolly

ice lolly

ice lolly

ice lolly

...umm...

んー

You might be wondering, what's wrong with this?

これの何がダメなの？と思うかもしれません。

It's true that note is an English word

note というのは、確かに英語なんですが、

but actually a note is what  we say for a small memo

実は、note は小さなメモ書きのことを指し、

written down on usually a small piece of  paper like a scrap of paper or something.

小さい紙などに書かれた物のことです。

In Japanese, you'd probably call it a memo

日本語では、恐らくメモと言いますよね。

but in English, it's definitely note.

でも英語では、これはnore と言うんです。

So, you can see how you could be misunderstood

ですので、誤解が生じやすいのは、

if you use the word note for this.

もしこれをnote と言ってしまう時です。

Instead, you should say the full word notebook.

代わりに、これはnotebook と言う必要があります。

This one is very tricky, too.

これもとても分かりづらいです。

In English, we use the word plug socket.

英語では、plug socket と言います。

So, already you can see they're very different.

かなり違うのがすでに分かると思います。

コンセント sounds like a few English words

コンセントは、いくつかの英単語に聞こえますが、

but nothing that i could immediately  link to what it describes.

意味が合いそうな単語は、すぐに思いつきません。

I did a little research

調べてみたら、

and it seems that a long time  ago in about the 18th century

遥か昔、18世紀頃に、

we used the word concentric plug

concentric plug という言葉が世界中で使われており、

to describe the socket and the  plug in both English and Japanese.

これは、コンセントと電源プラグの両方を指していたようです。

But why concentric?

でも concentric って?

Concentric describes something that is usually

Concentric って言うのは、通常は何か

circular in shape or curved in some way.

円形や、弧を描く形を表します。

But our plugs and sockets are not all circular.

でも電源プラグもコンセントも円形ではないですよね。

Well actually, they used to be.

実は、昔はそうだったようです。

The original plugs and the  original sockets were circular.

電源プラグやコンセントの原型は、どちらも円形だったみたいです。

After a while, the words were probably split into

しばらくして、concentric plug という単語は恐らく、2つに分かれて、

コンセントmeaning the socket or  outlet in American English

片方はコンセントと呼ばれ、これは、イギリスではsocket 、アメリカではoutlet のことです。そしてもう片方は、（電源）プラグと呼ばれました。

and the plug.

恐らく、このコンセントという単語は、日本ではそのまま残り、

So, perhaps it's the case that in  Japanese the word kind of stuck

英語においては、全然異なる単語に変わったんだと思います。

but in English, it just changed completely.

どちらにせよ、もしスマホを充電したいなら、

Either way, if you need a  place to charge your phone

plug socket はどこ？と聞く必要があります。

you should ask for a plug socket.
