Tongue twisters are phrases that are difficult to say, so they're really good chances to practice your pronunciation. Let's go!

"tongue twisters" は、言いにくいフレーズ、早口言葉のこと。だから、とても良い発音の練習になるんですよ。では、やってみましょう。

"Sally sold seashells by the seashore."

/sali sóuld siːʃɛlz bʌɪ ðə siːʃɔː/ 「 サリーは海辺で貝殻を売りました。」

This one's difficult because of the "s" and "sh" sounds.

これは、"s /s/" と "sh /ʃ/" のせいで難しくなっていますね。

The next tongue twister is also a classic one about woodchucks.

次の早口言葉も、ウッドチャックにまつわる、昔からある早口言葉ですね。

Woodchucks are real creatures that exist on the west coast of the United States, primarily in Washington and Oregon.

ウッドチャックは、アメリカの西海岸に実在する動物なんですよ。主にワシントン州とか、オレゴン州にいますね。

They're like beavers but they don't live in rivers, they live in, like, forests and rocks.

ビーバーみたいなのですが、川には生息せず、森や岩場などに住んでいます。

The tongue twister is "how much wood would a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood?"

この早口言葉はこうですね。/haʊ mʌtʃ wʊd wʊd ə wʊdtʃʌk tʃʌk ɪf ə wʊdtʃʌk kʊd tʃʌk wʊd/

How much wood would a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood?

And then there's a common response to that, which is "It would chuck all the wood that a woodchuck could, if a woodchuck could chuck wood."

そして、これの返答にあたる、よく知られている早口言葉があります。それは、/ɪt wʊd tʃʌk ɔːl ðə wʊd ðat ə wʊdtʃʌk kʊd ɪf ə wʊdtʃʌk kʊd tʃʌk wʊd/ 「ウッドチャックが木を投げることができるとしたら、投げられる木はすべて投げるだろう」です。

Hard one! And one we came up with the other day was "sushi session."

難しいの！ あと、この前思いついたのは、"sushi session /suːʃi sɛʃ(ə)n/(=寿司セッション)"。

That's a good one, right? They were like let's go for a sushi session, I was like, that's hard!

よくできてるでしょ？ さぁ、寿司セッションに行こう！みたいな感じだったんだけど。言えない！と思って。

That's a really good one, too.

これもよくできた早口言葉。
