On March 11th at 2:46 pm

3月11日の午後2時46分に

Boom! the earthquake hit

ドカン！地震が来た

I had a small house along with those buildings

私はそれらの建物と一緒に小さな家を持っていました

my mother was on the 2nd floor

母は二階にいた

and she couldn't come down (because of her age)

降りられない

I told her "We're coming to get you"

私は彼女に言った "私たちはあなたを迎えに行く"

"take it slow, stay calm"

"慌てずに落ち着いて

my daughter was there too

うちの娘もいた

so I made sure until they both came down

二人が降りてくるまで確認した

and then while I'm moving to this way...

と、こちらに移動している間に

I told my kitchen staff

厨房のスタッフには

"turn off the gas and lights"

"ガスと電気を止めろ"

"everyone let's get out of here"

"みんなここから出よう"

then we heard a rattling sound

ガタガタ

we ran this way

こっちに走った

at the front desk

フロントにて

I said "bring the guest list and a radio"

ゲストリストとラジオを持って来いと言ったんだ

"Is everyone okay?"

"みんな大丈夫？"

"first things first, get outside!"

"まず第一に外に出ろ！"

"hurry hurry!"

"急いで急いで！

that's what I said to everyone

それはみんなに言った

and then...

そして...

I asked another staff

別のスタッフに聞いてみました。

"there might be a guest in the bath area"

"お風呂場にお客さんがいるかもしれない"

"can you check that out?"

"これを見てくれないか？"

"all guests, please follow me!"

"すべてのお客様、私について来てください！"

"let's go outside"

"外に出よう"

everyone started to gather here

集まり始めた

disaster prevention announcement was warning...3 meter tall tsunami

防災発表は警報だった...高さ3メートルの津波

we set a radio in the center of the parking lot

駐車場の中央にラジオを設置しました

and when we turned it on,

とスイッチを入れると

the earthquake had stopped for a moment

じしんもひとまずおさまった

people who gathered here such as neighbors,

ご近所さんなど集まった人たち。

and people walking down the road,

と道を歩いている人がいました。

all gathered around here

一堂に会して

we checked if anyone missing

誰か行方不明者がいないか調べました

actually, I found out

実は気がついたのですが

my daughter and 5 year-old granddaughter were missing

娘と5歳の孫娘がいなくなった

so I asked

と聞いてきました。

"where are they?"

"彼らはどこにいる？"

at that time I saw my grandchild

その時、私は孫を見て

they were practicing riding a bicycle

自転車の練習をしていた

in the parking lot over there

あそこの駐車場で

I saw them running up the hill and trying to come here

丘を駆け上がってここに来ようとしているのが見えた。

I said "hurry up"

急いでと言ったんだ

then I announced everyone "this is the day to evacuate to the mountain"

"今日は山に避難する日だ "って みんなに宣言したんだよ

"for sure tsunami will come soon"

"津波は確実に来る

that time, I think the earthquake started again

その時、また地震が始まったと思います。

I said "let's go up the mountain now"

"今から山に登ろう "って言ったんだよ

and we started evacuating to the mountain

と山に避難し始めました。

before the tsunami, I had actually made this evacuation route just in case

津波が来る前に、実はこの避難経路を作っていました。

when I said to everyone, "let's go there"

みんなで「あそこ行こうよ」って言ったら

some of my staff said

スタッフの中には

they wanna go back to their home

故郷に帰りたがる

we were holding a small wedding party on that day

その日のうちに小さな披露宴をしていました。

the bridegroom was the son of our head chef

花婿は料理長の息子だった

they did not want their guests to be stuck here

客人はここに留まることを望まなかった

I think I asked "using the road by the ocean and river...is there enough time?"

"海と川のそばの道路を利用して...時間は足りているのか？"という質問をしたと思います。

"do not leave here now!" I think I said that too

"今すぐここを離れるな！"それも言ったと思う

at the same time I was thinking

と思うと同時に

tsunami will come here soon any moment

津波はいつ来るかわからない

so I couldn't really make them stay here

だからここには泊めてあげられなかった

when they wanted to go home

帰りたい時に

anyway I made everyone evacuate to the mountain

とにかくみんなを山に避難させた

so I went up the mountain (for the first time)

ということで、山に登ってきました

that time, we had plenty of time

その時は時間に余裕があった

the ground was still shaking, but

地面はまだ揺れていたが

we did our best to climb up

頑張って登ってきました

I made this evacuation route up to 30m high

この避難経路を高さ30mまでにしました。

so, everyone went up to that point

ということで、みんなそこまで行って

but when everyone climbed up,

が、みんなが登ってくると

I came back here

私はここに戻ってきました

then....

したら....

I saw the sea level getting higher

海面が高くなっているのが見えた

people from the town were still gathering in the parking lot

駐車場にはまだ町の人たちが集まっていました。

the warning bell was struck by someone

警鐘が人に当たった

our staff were in the pine grove by the beach

私たちのスタッフは、ビーチのそばの松林にいました。

even I shouted, "come up the mountain!"

叫んでも「山に登って来い」と言った

they did not come up

出てこない

so my staff who just came up with me said

ということで、先ほどのスタッフが言っていました。

"Okamisan, I am going to get them now"

"おかみさん 今から取りに行きます"

but in my head,

でも頭の中では

I remembered the words from my grandmother

祖母の言葉を思い出しました。

that we should never go back

二度と戻ってはならない

they used to tell us "people who went back...never came back."

昔は「戻った人は戻ってこない」と言われていました。

so I knew no one should go back down

だから誰も下に戻るべきではないと思っていた

but

けれども

I also thought that we still have time

私も、まだ時間があると思っていました。

since the staff is going to get them

スタッフが取りに行くので

I went down together

一緒に下った

when I came down

下りてきたとき

this was the door to the kitchen at that time

これがその時の台所の扉

I went in and changed my footwear to boots

中に入って履物をブーツに履き替え

because I was thinking that water will come here soon

すぐに水が来ると思っていたので

I wanted to be ready for that, so I changed into boots,

覚悟しておきたかったので、ブーツに履き替えました。

and start running again

走り出す

the staff was saying "let's run up the mountain, a tsunami is coming soon"

津波が来るから山を駆け上がろう」と言っていました。

the reason I came here was...

私がここに来た理由は

the warning bell was on the hill over there

丘の上の警鐘

fishermen, my staff, and another person were striking the bell

漁師とスタッフともう一人の人が鐘を打っていた

so I shouted, "a tsunami is coming hurry! hurry!"

だから私は叫んだ 「津波が来るぞ 急げ！

from here, the tunnel over there...

ここから向こうのトンネル...

can you see that hole?

あの穴が見えるか？

at that point, I couldn't see it anymore

その時点ではもう見えなくなっていた

so I thought "Oh no, tsunami?!"

と思っていたので、「やばい、津波か！」と思いました。

I tried to run away very fast

猛スピードで逃げようとした

there were still some cars driving down the road

道を走る車が残っていた

I wondered where they were heading

どこに向かっているのかと思った

some people were standing there too

立っている人もいた

I said "Hurry up! Let's go!"

私は「早く！」と言いました。"急げ！"と言ったんだ

my staff and the last woman were here

私のスタッフと最後の女性がここにいた

again the staff said "hurry now"

またしても「急げ」と言われた

we we all ran this way

みんなでこっちに走ってきた

then I looked over there

そっちを見たら

we had a bus in the parking lot over there

あっちの駐車場にバスがあって

the bus was lifted up by the wave

バスは波に持ち上げられて

the wave had already reached here

此処まで来て

as I ran, I honestly wondered if I would make it

走っていると、正直、間に合うかどうか不安になってきました。

I was praying I would make it in time

間に合うように祈っていました

here we had a shed

此処には小屋があった

and the evacuation route started here

避難経路はここから始まった

when I turned, there were 2 women coming

振り返ると、二人の女性が来ていました。

a few men also joined us from the beach

ビーチからも数名の男性が参加してくれました

and we all ran up real fast

駆け上がってきた

but the people climbing, suddenly stopped going up

しかし、登っている人たちは、急に上がらなくなった

still, women coming from this way

それにしても、こっちから来た女は

"hurry hurry, the tsunami already came!"

"急いで 急いで 津波が来た！

then 2 women came running up

そこに二人の女性が駆け寄ってきて

"let's head up!"

"上に向かおう！"

"I think we made it!"

"成功したと思う！"

probably here,

多分、ここだと思います。

I was taken by the tsunami

津波に連れて行かれた

that time...

あの時は...

I was looking to the side

横目で見ていたのですが

but never looked back

振り返りもせず

so I didn't think that the tsunami was already there

と思っていたので、すでに津波が来ているとは思わず

I thought "I am safe now on the mountain"

今は山の上が安全だと思っていました。

but actually, I was in the water

が、実は水の中にいた

the sky was blue,

空は青かった。

well...

あの...

there were bubbles coming out in the clear water,

澄んだ水の中に泡が出てきていました。

the sky was blue and beautiful

空は青く美しい

I was wondering... "why am I in the water?"

不思議に思っていた..."なぜ私は水の中にいるのか？"

"maybe I am going to die here..."

"もしかしたら私はここで死ぬかもしれない..."

"so, this is how I die"

"これが俺の死に方だ"

"I was destined to die at 54..."

"54歳で死ぬ運命だった..."

I was floating and starting up at the sky

空に浮かんで立ち上がった

the next moment,

次の瞬間

I was in the dark

私は暗闇の中にいた

I thought something is covering me

何かに覆われていると思った

and I remembered that I kept a boat beside the mountain

と言って、山の横に船を置いていたことを思い出しました。

so I thought it was the boat covering me

だから、私はそれが私を覆うボートだと思った

あのL字型の空間が見えますか？

the next morning, 5 cars were lying on the ground

翌朝、5台の車が横たわっていた

my house was completely destroyed

うちは全壊

above the house, the cars and our bus were piling up...

家の上には、車やバスが山積みになっていました...。

again on the day, when I was taken

私が連れて行かれた日に

I was covered with something

私は何かに覆われていた

but I couldn't move it at all

でも全然動かせない

but I needed to get whatever it was, off of me

でも、私はそれが何であれ、それが私から離れていた。

so really struggled...then the next moment

だから本当に苦労した...そして次の瞬間

It popped right off!

飛び出した！

the people on the mountain said there was a whirlpool

山の人は渦潮があると言っていた

because of that stream, I think it was taken off

あの流れのせいで、外されたんだと思います。

then I saw the grey sky like today

今日のような灰色の空を見た

beyond the black water,

黒水の向こうに

I could see through to the sky

空まで見通せた

I thought, "oh, that's the surface...!"

"あ、これが表面なんだ......！"と思った。

"I'm gonna go up there and survive!"

"私はそこに行って生き延びる！"

"I wanna survive, I wanna survive"

"生き残りたい 生き残りたい"

so I came up to the surface

浮かび上がってきた

I reached out to grab the debris

破片を掴もうと手を伸ばした

the debris I grabbed turned out to be someone's hand

掴んだ破片は人の手になった

it was soft and warm

やわらかくてあたたかい

I asked, "who is this?"

"誰だ？"と聞いてみました。

"I'm Yoshida, Okami-san keep holding my hand"

"私は吉田です 大神さんは手を握っていてください"

she was my staff who went down the mountain with me

彼女は私と一緒に山を下りた私のスタッフでした。

and was caught between the debris and floating over there

瓦礫の間に挟まれてあそこに浮いていた

she saw my hand came up from the water

手があがってきた

so she caught it

彼女はそれをキャッチした

but her arm was too skinny and I thought it would break

しかし、彼女の腕はあまりにも痩せていたので、私は折れてしまうのではないかと思いました。

so I let go of her arm

だから私は彼女の腕を離した

as I struggled in the water...

水の中でもがいていると...

I ended up on the tire of our bus

結局バスのタイヤに乗ってしまった

and suddenly the water stopped

とっさに水が止まる

so the staff got out from the debris and came on the tire

瓦礫の中からスタッフが出てきてタイヤの上に乗ってきたので

at that moment, I heard another person choking

その時、別の人が喉を詰まらせているのが聞こえました。

and saying "I'm not going to make it..."

とか言って、"もうダメかな...... "と

but I shouted, "the wave is coming, go up hurry!"

しかし私は叫んだ "波が来ている 急いで上がれ！"

she was the last woman running from the town

町から逃げてきた最後の女

using her last energy, she came up to the tire

最後の力を振り絞ってタイヤのところまで来た

three of us, together we helped each other up

三人で助け合って

and got up to the roof of the bus

とバスの屋根に登って

jumped up to the cliff

崖っぷちに飛び上がった

that was the evacuation route I had built before the tsunami

津波の前に作った避難路

"We're gonna make it!"

"私たちはそれを作るつもりです！"

"We are still alive! help us~"

"まだ生きてるんだ 助けてくれ～"

that's how we climbed up the cliff

そうやって崖を登ってきた

so,

だから

we set up a fire about 60 meters up the mountain

山を登って60メートルほどのところで火を焚いた

but...

でも...

right before it was getting dark,

暗くなる直前に

there was a fisherman who evacuated in the hotel

ホテルに避難してきた漁師さんがいた

and he came up to the mountain to get us

と言って山に登ってきてくれました。

he said "if you stay there, you all freeze to death"

彼は言った "そこにいたらみんな凍死する"

so, we could go back to the hotel that night

その日の夜にホテルに戻れるように

that's Torao-san, the fisherman I'm gonna introduce to you later

それは後ほど紹介する漁師の虎尾さんです。

he saved our lives

彼は私たちの命を救ってくれた

after we came back,

帰ってきてから

there were still big earthquakes and tsunami warnings for 3 or so days

三日ほど前から大地震と津波警報が出ていました。

so we grabbed blankets

だから毛布を持って

placed water here and there in the mountain

山水

again grabbed blankets

またもや毛布を掴まされた

we would climb up 30 meters on the mountain every day

三十メートルの山を毎日登っていく

elder people were looking up at the sky on the mountain

年長者は山の上の空を見上げていた

we would repeat it every day

くりかえしの日々

around the 3rd day, some people said they couldn't climb the mountain anymore

三日目くらいになると、もう登れないと言う人もいました。

so we decided to wait on the roof of the hotel

ホテルの屋上で待つことにしました。

there were still tsunami warnings,

まだ津波警報が出ていました。

I thought the tsunami could come again anytime

津波はいつ来てもおかしくないと思っていた

we went back and forth

行ったり来たり

between the mountain and roof for 3 days

山と屋根の間の三日間

I was scared...yeah

怖かった...うん

I felt like Horaikan(hotel) was like a ship

宝来館は船のような気がしました。

I felt like we were floating in the ocean at night

夜は海に浮かんでいるような気がして

that time, I thought

その時思ったのですが

if Horaikan was taken by the tsunami or collapse,

宝来館が津波や倒壊に連れて行かれたら

that is our destiny

是が非でも

because it was snowing even if we went up the mountain,

なぜなら、山に行っても雪が降っていたからです。

and it was really freezing cold

凍えるほど寒かった

we could die if we stayed up there

このままでは死んでもおかしくない

but there were blankets in Horaikan (so we chose to stay there)

鳳来館には毛布がありました（なので、そこに泊まることにしました

knowing there was still a risk of the tsunami coming back

津波再来の危険を承知の上で

but we didn't really have a choice

しかたがない

it was either freeze in the mountains, or stay in Horaikan,

山で凍るか、鳳来館に泊まるかのどちらかでした。

we struggled with that choice daily

その選択と日々格闘していました

but chose to stay in Horaikan

が、宝来館に泊まることにしました。

for 10 years,

10年間。

I've been just reliving 3.11 over and over

3.11を何度も何度も追体験しているだけなのに

as I shared this story

この話をしながら

I've just been living 1 day for 10 years

1日を10年生きてきただけで

and now, 10 years later...

そして10年後の今...
