Mark Twain once said that there is nothing so annoying as having two people talking when you are busy interrupting.

マーク・トウェインはこう言いました―自分が話に割り込んでいる最中に、2 人の人間が話している時ほど、イライラすることはない。

All joking aside, when we are talking, we don't like to be interrupted, but when we are listening, we sometimes feel it's necessary to do it.

ジョークはさておき、話している時には、割り込まれたくないですよね。でも、人の話を聞いている時には、割り込まなきゃと感じることがあります。

Before we look at different ways of interrupting a conversation, we must clarify on how to get the speaker's attention.

会話に割り込む様々な方法を見ていく前に、話し手の注意を引く方法をはっきりさせておきましょう。

For instance, a simple gesture like raising a hand or gently clearing the throat could help.

例えば、挙手や咳払いといった、シンプルなジェスチャーが使えます。

Remember, timing is key, as we do not want to come across as being impolite.

覚えておいてください。タイミングが重要です。失礼だと思われたくないですからね。

If we feel the need to interrupt, we could say:

話に割り込む必要があると感じたら、こう言うこともできます。

'Excuse me for interrupting, but…'

'Excuse me for interrupting, but…'（割り込んですみませんが…）

'Can I just mention something?'

'Can I just mention something?'（1 ついいですか？）

'Excuse me, I'd like to say something.'

'Excuse me, I'd like to say something.'（すみません、言いたいことがあるのですが。）

'Can I stop you there for a moment?'

'Can I stop you there for a moment?'（少し、いいですか？）

'I don't want to interrupt, however…'

'I don't want to interrupt, however…'（邪魔したくないのですが…）

If we want to add information we may use:

情報を加えたいときには、こう言えます。

'May I add…'

'May I add…'（付け加えてもいいですか…）

'Could I just mention…'

'Could I just mention…'（言っておきたいのですが…）

'I would like to add…'

'I would like to add…'（これを付け加えたいのですが…）

'Let me add …'

'Let me add …'（これを付け加えさせてください…）

'One thing that I should add is…'

'One thing that I should add is…'（1つ付け加えておきたいのが…）

Other times, we need to interrupt, to ask our conversation partner to expand on his or her last point:

また、話者が述べた最後の点について、少し話を広げてもらうために、話を中断する必要がある場合もあります。

'Could you clarify that?'

'Could you clarify that?'（説明していただけますか？）

'Would you mind explaining that a little more?'

'Would you mind explaining that a little more?'（もう少し説明していただけますか？）

'Could you tell us a little bit more about that?'

'Could you tell us a little bit more about that?'（それについて、もう少し話してもらえますか？）

'Sorry, could you explain that a little more?'

'Sorry, could you explain that a little more?'（すみません、もう少し説明していただけますか？）

'Could you clarify that last point, before we move on?'

'Could you clarify that last point, before we move on?'（次に進む前に、最後の点について説明していただけますか？）

Often, people want to interrupt our conversation, and we have to politely allow them to.

人はよく、会話を中断したいと思うものです。その場合は丁寧に、相手にそうさせてあげないといけません。

Try using:

こう言ってみてください。

'No problem, go ahead.'

'No problem, go ahead.'（問題ありません、どうぞ。）

'Sure. What do you think?'

'Sure. What do you think?'（はい、どう思いますか？）

'That is alright, what is it that you want to say?'

'That is alright, what is it that you want to say?'（良いですよ、おっしゃりたいことは？）

'Of course, tell me what you think.'

'Of course, tell me what you think.'（もちろん、考えを聞かせてください。）

And finally, after being interrupted, we have to find a way of successfully returning to our previous conversation:

最後に、話を中断した後には、元の会話に上手く戻る方法が必要ですね。

'As I was saying, I think...'

'As I was saying, I think...'（話していたとおり、私はこう思います…）

'I would like to return to my point.'

'I would like to return to my point.'（要点に戻りましょう。）

'To get back to what I was saying, I feel...'

'To get back to what I was saying, I feel...'（話していた内容に戻ると、こう感じます…）

'Continuing where I left off...'

'Continuing where I left off...'（続きを言うと…）
