Do you have difficulty remembering the correct spellings of words?

正しいスペルを覚えるのが苦手だとか？

Well, in this lesson, I'm going to teach you an easy, three-step method to improve your spelling and write correctly without making mistakes.

さて、今回のレッスンでは私が簡単な3つのステップを使った方法で、スペルを上達させて間違うことなく正しく単語を書けるようにお手伝いします。

So, let's talk about that.

では早速見ていきましょう。

Okay, the first step of this exercise is to find your spelling mistakes.

では、最初のステップは自分のスペル間違いを見つけることです。

You do this by checking your own writing.

自分の書いた文を読んでチェックしていきます。

If you are a student, then I'm sure you write a lot.

学生の皆さんは、書く機会が多いと思いますし、

If you work, you might write emails or reports.

仕事をされている方はメールやレポートを書くことがあるでしょうね。

So, at least once per week, take your writing, and try to find spelling mistakes that you have made.

ですから少なくとも1週間に1回は、自分の書いたものを読み返してスペルの間違いがないか探してみて下さい。

Now, I know that this can be difficult – you don't know what mistakes you're making.

とは言っても、自分がどこで間違えているか分からなかったら難しいと思います。

So there are two great ways to know your mistakes – the first is to ask someone else to read your work and underline or circle any errors and also give you the correct spellings.

ですから、間違いを把握するには2つの方法があります。1つ目は誰かに書いたものを読んでもらい、間違っているところに下線を引いてもらって正しいスペルも書いてもらう事です。

The second option is to take your writing and type it or copy/paste it into Microsoft Word.

2つ目のオプションは、自分が書いたものをワード上にコピペすることです。

The software will then underline your spelling mistakes for you and give you the corrections.

そうすると、ワードのソフトウェアがスペルの間違いを下線で教えてくれて正しく直してくれます。

This way, you can identify your own errors.

こうすることで、自分の間違いを見つけることができるのです。

Okay, let's do an exercise to understand this process: Here's a short text that I wrote – there are five spelling errors in it.

というわけで、このプロセスを理解するために実際に試してみましょう。ここに私が書いた短い文があります。この中にはスペルの間違いが5つあります。

Stop the video, try to find the mistakes, then play the video again and check.

動画を止めて、間違いを探して、それから動画を再生してチェックしてみて下さい。

Okay, here are the answers: "a lot" should be spelled with a space.

はい、では答えです。「‘a lot」は間にスペースが必要ですね。

"Definitely' has no 'a" – it should be an "i."

「Definitely」には「a」がありません。「i」が入るのです。

"Received" is written with "ei" not "ie."

「Received」は「ie」ではなくて「ei」です。

"Rhythm" needs to have an "h" after "r."

「Rhythm」は「r」の後に「h」が入ります。

And "schedule" needs to start with '"sch."

そして「schedule」の書き出しは「sch」です。

Okay, did you find them all?

さて、皆さんは全部見つけられましたか？

All right, so like this, you identify the words that you are spelling incorrectly and learn their correct spellings.

まあ、こんな感じで間違ってスペルした言葉を見つけ出して、正しいスペルを学んでいくという感じです。

And now comes the important part – record the correct spellings of these words.

そしてここが重要になるのですけど、正しいスペルを記録しておきます。

That means you should note down the correct spellings of all the words you spelled wrongly in a notebook or in a file on your computer.

つまり、間違ってスペルした言葉全部の正しいスペルをノートに書きだしたり、コンピュータのファイル内に保存しておくわけです。

You should write the spellings on one side of the page, and on the other, you should write the phonetic transcription – that is, the same word in pronunciation symbols.

ページの片方にはスペルを書いて、反対側にはその単語の発音記号を書いておきます。

This will allow you to see the difference between the spelling and the pronunciation, and you will also be able to test yourself later.

こうすればスペルと発音の違いを見て取ることができますし、後で自分でテストもできます。

Now, I know that you don't know all of these symbols - that's okay, they're very easy, and you can find them by looking up each word in a dictionary.

発音記号は全部は知らない、という方もいるでしょうけど、大丈夫です、とても簡単ですから。辞書を引けば載っていますし。

So just like I have done here, you should take all of the words, note down the correct spellings, and also note down the phonetic transcription.

ですからここでやったように、単語を全部スペルを書いて発音記号も書き出しましょう。

Finally, the last step is review the spellings regularly.

最後に、定期的にスペルを見直すことも大事です。

You do this so you don't forget the correct spellings.

こうすれば正しいスペルを忘れません。

Make one day of the week your spelling improvement week (day), maybe Saturday or Sunday.

毎週1日はスペル向上の日として設定しましょう。土曜か日曜がいいですかね。

On this day, test yourself on the spellings.

この日には自分にスペルテストを課します。

To do this, open your notebook and hide the spellings.

ノートを開いてスペルの部分を隠します。

Only look at the pronunciation symbols.

発音記号だけを見て

Now, can you give me the correct spellings of these words that we just learned?

皆さんは、今勉強したばかりの単語を正しくスペルできますか？

Stop the video, try to write down the correct spellings, then play the video again and check.

動画を止めて、正しいスペルを書きだして、動画を再生してチェックします。

Okay, here they are.

はい、答えはこちらです。

Did you get them all right?

全部合っていましたか？

So, you should do this for your own spellings that you write down.

これを自分で選んだ書き出したスペルでもやってみましょう。

By testing yourself, you will remember the correct spellings, and you will not make the same mistakes again.

自分にテストを課すことで、正しいスペルを覚えられて同じ間違いを繰り返さずに済みます。

You should do these three steps regularly: find your mistakes, record the correct spellings, and test yourself regularly.

この3つのステップを定期的に行って、スペルの間違いを見つけて正しく直して定期的にテストをします。

As you do this, you will start to collect more and more words.

こうしていく中で、単語がドンドン記憶されていきます。

This means that your mistakes will reduce, and eventually, you will be able to write without making spelling errors.

そうすると、間違いをする回数も減っていき、次第に間違いをせずにスペルを書けるようになります。
