A volcano is basically just a hole in the ground.

火山は基本的に地面に穴が開いているだけです。

MAZU: Here, let me explain.

There's all this hot liquid under the Earth called magma.

地球の下にはマグマと呼ばれる高温の液体があります。

When too much magma builds up

マグマが溜まりすぎると

it shoots out through ruptures in the ground.

地面の裂け目を通って飛び出してきます。

The hot rocks and liquid that come out are called lava.

熱い岩や液体が出てくるものを溶岩といいます。

When the lava cools,

溶岩が冷えると

it builds up on the sides of the hole,

それは穴の側面に蓄積されます。

and eventually forms a volcano.

で、最終的には火山を形成します。

ROCKY: Wow, cool!

Some are dormant,

which means they haven't erupted in a long time,

but could erupt again.

And then there are extinct volcanoes.

They're the ones that are done erupting.
