Here's the story behind a few of them.

One… Xmas.

1つ...Xmas。

Xmas has been contentious over the years, 

Ｘｍａｓｍａｓは何年にもわたって争われてきました。

with some arguing it's a term designed

to remove the religious importance of Christmas.

 In fact, X is the symbol for “chi” -

ａｃａｒｅａｃｅａｓｅｚｓ＿２０２Ｆ＿ａｓｅｒｍａｎｓｅｒｉｎｅＸは、「気」を表す記号です。

the first letter in the Greek word for Christ, 

ギリシャ語でキリストの頭文字をとったものである。

and that is why Christmas, or Christ's Mass, became Xmas.

ということで、クリスマス、つまりキリストのミサがXmasになったわけです。

Two… Santa.

2つ・・・・(ﾟ∀ﾟ)

Santa Claus comes from the Dutch, Sinterklass,

サンタクロースはオランダのシンタークラスから来ています。

which literally translates as Saint Nicholas.

は、文字通り聖ニコラスと訳されています。

Before Saint Nicholas was even born though,

the Norse god, Odin,

was believed to lead a hunting party through the sky during Yule,

Coming from the Latin "carula", meaning circular dance,

carols used to be pagan songs, sung all throughout the year.

They were swiftly adopted by the Romans, and then by the church,

Four… bauble.

4つ...ボーブル

This used to be the term for a baton carried by court jesters,

Back in the 17th Century,

Coming from France, étincelle, meaning “sparkle” or “spark”,

thanks to a Ukrainian fairytale

choosing to spend the night decorating their tree

Six… stockings.

６つ...ストッキング

Originating from an old English word, stocc,

古くからの英語の単語、stoccに由来します。

our Christmas stockings also have their own Christmas tale behind them.

私たちのクリスマス・ストッキングにも、その背後にはクリスマスの物語があります。

In it, St Nicholas wanted to help a poor man and his daughters.

その中で、聖ニコラスは貧しい人とその娘たちを助けたいと思っていました。

Knowing they wouldn't accept charity,

he threw three golden balls through their window at night,

each one landing in a different stocking.

The balls were sometimes represented as oranges,

Seven… chestnuts.

We can trace the word “chestnut” back to "kastaneia",

which means "nut from Castana" – a town in Greece.

ギリシャの町「カスタナの木の実」を意味します。

From here, our chestnuts trees were imported to the rest of Europe.

Roman soldiers used to roast them over an open fire,

ローマの兵士が直火で焼いていました。

or eat porridge out of them before they went into battle.

Eight… Nativity.

エイト...

The word “Nativity” comes from the Latin word “nativus”,

キリスト降誕」という言葉は、ラテン語の「nativus」に由来しています。

meaning 'born'.

生まれた」という意味。

It's thought the first Nativity scene

最初の聖誕祭のシーンだと思われる

was created by Saint Francis of Assisi in 1223.

Mary and Joseph are usually placed on either side of the manger.

Then you have the shepherds.

when they'd heat wine to defend their bodies against the cold winter,

and the regions they traded with.

Its popularity continued throughout the Middle Ages,
