In a tragic role reversal, Pambuan, a veteran intensive care unit nurse who had been caring for COVID patients, was admitted to St. Mary's ICU in the spring.

普段は集中治療室で Covid の患者の世話をしてきたパンブアンさんが、自身も感染してしまって St. Mary 病院の集中治療室に収容されたのは春先の事でした。

The 66-year-old was rendered unconscious by paralysis inducing sedation and placed on a ventilator to breathe.

66 歳のパンブアンさんは鎮痛麻酔によって意識を失い、人工呼吸器が取り付けられました。

A feeding tube was later inserted.

その後、食事用チューブも体内に取り込まれました。

Her situation was often dire, said attending physician Dr Maged Tanios.

担当のマゲッド・タニオス医師は、彼女の症状が深刻さを極めた時期が幾度もあったと話します。

At multiple times she was very near death.

死の淵まで行ったのは何度かありました。

I would say this happened at least half a dozen times that she was very near death.

少なくとも 6 回くらいは、命の危機に瀕しましたね。

We had a hard time keeping her oxygen compatible with life, and we had to use a lot of other treatments that improve our oxygen.

体内酸素を生命維持可能状態に保つのが難しく、酸素状況を改善するために多くの治療も必要でした。

By the time she awoke and could breathe on her own again, Pambuan was too weak to stand but fought back and struggled through weeks of painful therapy to regain her strength.

目が覚めて自力で息ができるようになった頃には、パンブアンさんは立つこともできないほど弱っていましたが、体力回復のために数週間に渡る苦しいセラピーに取り組みました。

Now Pambuan and is finally home, where she will continue her recuperation.

そしてついに自宅に帰ってきて、今後も療養を継続していきます。

I thought, I'm not going to come back in this house, but what?

もうこの家に帰ってくることはないと思っていましたけど、

You know what's going on?

まあ、どうなっていくのか分からなかったので。

But it's really nice to be home.

でも家に帰って来られて本当に嬉しいです。

When or if she will return to work in the ICU remains an open question, but in the meantime, Pambuan said she feels indebted to her co-workers' further care.

職場である集中治療室にいつ復帰できるかは神のみぞ知るところですが、パンブアンさんは同僚の努力に対して恩義を感じていると話します。
