The old man went into the woods to gather firewood and the old woman went to the river to do laundry.

おじいさんは薪を集めるために森に入り、おばあさんは洗濯をするために川に行きました。

When the old woman was washing clothes at the river, a giant peach came floating down the stream.

おばあさんが川で洗濯をしていると、巨大な桃が流れて来ました。

She picked it up. It was a really huge peach.

彼女はそれを取りました。それは本当に巨大な桃でした。

She brought it back home so that she could eat it with the old man.

彼女はそれを、おじいさんと食べるために家に持ち帰りました。

They cut the peach, and surprise! A healthy baby boy jumped out from the peach!

彼らが桃を切ると、あらびっくり！健康的な男の赤ちゃんが桃から飛び出してきたのです！

Both the old man and woman were glad because they had no child.

おじいさんもおばあさんも、子供がいなかったので喜びました。

They named the boy Momotaro for he was born from a peach.

彼らは、男の子が桃から生まれたので、桃太郎と名付けました。

They raised him with a lot of love.

彼らは男の子をたくさんの愛情をかけて育てました。

When Momotaro turned fifteen years old, he was the strongest in the village.

桃太郎が15歳になったとき、彼は村で一番強い人物でした。

Meanwhile, demons attacked many villages and stole their treasures.

その頃、鬼たちが多くの村を攻撃し、宝物を盗んでいました。

All the villagers were in trouble.

村人たちはみんな困っていました。

Momotaro was now old enough and decided to slay the demons.

桃太郎はもう十分育っていて、鬼を倒すことに決めました。

The old woman made delicious dumplings for him.

おばあさんは彼のためにおいしい団子を作りました。

He left for Demon Island taking the dumplings with him.

彼は鬼ヶ島に向けて、その団子を持って旅立ちました。

On the way to Demon Island, a dog spoke to Momotaro saying "Hello, hello, Momotaro.

鬼ヶ島に向かう途中、桃太郎に犬が話しかけました。「こんにちは、こんにちは、桃太郎。」

Could you give me one of your dumplings? If you give me one, I will accompany you! Woof! Woof!"

「あなたの団子を1つくれませんか？もし1つくれたら、一緒についていきます。ワン！ワン！」

After the dog, a pheasant came flying.

犬の後は、キジが飛んで来ました。

"Hello, hello, Momotaro. Could you give me one of your dumplings? If you give me one, I will accompany you! Squawk! Squawk!"

「こんにちは、こんにちは、桃太郎。団子を1つくれませんか？もし1つくれたら、ご一緒します！ガー！ガー！」

Next, Momotaro ran into a monkey.

次に、桃太郎は猿に出くわしました。

The monkey said, "Hello, hello, Momotaro. Could you give me one of your dumplings? If you give me one, I will accompany you! Ooo! Ooo!"

その猿は言いました。「こんにちは、こんにちは、桃太郎。団子を1つもらえませんか？もしくれたら、一緒についていきます！ウー！ウー！」

The dog, the pheasant and the monkey joined Momotaro.

犬、キジ、猿が桃太郎に加わりました。

They headed to Demon Island by boat.

彼らはボートで鬼ヶ島に向かいました。

When they arrived to the island, the demons were having a drinking bout.

島に着いた時、鬼たちは酒盛り中でした。

This was a great chance! They started attacking.

これは大きなチャンス！彼らは攻撃を始めました。

The dog sank his teeth into them, the monkey scratched them and the pheasant pecked at the demons.

犬は彼らに深く噛みつき、猿は彼らを引っ掻き、キジは鬼たちをつつきました。

Momotaro was fighting the demon leader.

桃太郎は鬼のリーダーと戦っていました。

The demon had a great steel rod!

その鬼は大きな鋼棒を持っていました！

But Momotaro drew his sword and defeated him.

しかし、桃太郎は刀を抜いて、彼を倒しました。

The demons surrendered to Momotaro and his party.

鬼たちは桃太郎とその一行に降伏しました。

"Will you promise to stop making people suffer?" asked Momotaro to the demons.

「人々を苦しめるのをやめると約束するか？」 桃太郎は鬼たちに聞きました。

They swore, "We promise! We won't hurt anyone, anymore."

彼らは、「約束します！もう誰も傷つけません」と誓いました。

The demons were grateful and gave all the treasures to Momotaro.

鬼たちは感謝し、桃太郎にすべての宝物を与えました。

Momotaro and his party put all the treasures in a cart, went back home, and they lived happily ever after.

桃太郎とその一行は、すべての宝物を荷車に積んで家に帰り、その後もずっと幸せに暮らしました。
