This four episode series, we're going on a 4-day driving trip through central Japan, visiting some of the best and scenic spots in Nagoya on the surrounding prefectures.

この4回のシリーズでは、中部地方を4日間かけてドライブし、名古屋とその周辺の県の名勝・景勝地を訪ねます。

Day 1

１日目

Our trip begins at Chubu Central International Airport, where we pick up our trusty steed for the rest of the trip.

旅の始まりは中部国際空港で、この後の旅で頼りになる相棒を迎えに行きました。

From there, we drive to Nagoya Castle, have lunch before going to the Ise shrines and spend our first night at an accommodation in Ago Bay.

そこから車で名古屋城に行き、伊勢神宮に行く前に昼食をとり、英虞湾の宿泊施設で最初の夜を過ごします。

About 40 minutes away from the airport is the city of Nagoya, where we make our first stop for the day.

空港から約40分で名古屋に到着し、この日の最初の訪問地となります。

One of the most popular attractions in the city is Nagoya Castle, the former seat of one of the three branches of the Tokugawa family, which ruled Japan for about 250 years from the early 17th century.

名古屋で最も人気のある観光スポットのひとつは、17世紀初頭から約250年にわたって日本を支配した徳川家の御三家の一つがあった名古屋城です。

The palace buildings that you can see behind me are excellent replicas of its original.

私の後ろに見える宮殿の建物は、当時のものを見事に再現しています。

They feature excellent traditional crafts and artwork.

優れた伝統工芸品や美術品を紹介しています。

One thing that visitors may not realize is that not only with the castle grounds for defense purposes, there were also palace buildings where the local lords lived and entertained their guests.

訪問者が気付いていないかもしれないことの 1 つは、城内には防衛のための城郭だけでなく、領主の住居や賓客をもてなすための宮殿があったことです。

Many of these palace buildings have been lost over time, and few remain today.

これらの宮殿の建物の多くは、時間の経過とともに失われ、現在でも残っているものはほとんどありません。

Nagoya Castle is one of the very few castles whose palace has bean reconstructed.

名古屋城は、御殿が復元された数少ない城の一つです。

A few steps away from Nagoya Castle is Kinshasha Yoko Joe, made up of two restaurant areas filled with trendy and local specialties and where a headed for lunch after visiting the castle.

名古屋城から少し離れたところにある「金シャチ横丁」は、流行りの料理や名物料理が楽しめる2つのレストラン街で、名古屋城を見学した後にランチをする場所として利用されています。

One of the local dishes not to be missed within Nagoya is miso katsu, which is deep fried pork cutlets dipped in a savory blend of miso and dashi broth and my choice for lunch.

味噌カツは、味噌と出汁をブレンドした香ばしいスープで揚げた豚カツで、私が昼食に選んだ名古屋の郷土料理のひとつです。

Gold miso katsu is only available at the outlet closest to Nagoya Castle, and it looks super shiny.

金色の味噌カツは、名古屋城に一番近い店舗でしか食べられないので、見た目も超キラキラしています。

Our trip continues with a drive down south to the Shima Peninsula, with the Ise shrines or Ise Jingu, as they're knew in Japanese are located.

私たちの旅は、南下し、伊勢神宮または伊勢神宮がある志摩半島まで続きます。

The Ise shrines are the most sacred Shinto shrines in Japan, and they have a history dating back a couple of millennia.

伊勢神宮は日本で最も神聖な神社であり、その歴史は数千年前に遡ります。

I met Guigou, the outer shrine, which is dedicated to the goddess of food, clothing and water.

衣食住の神様を祀る外宮、桂宮に出会いました。

And this building behind me is the main shrine.

そして、後ろにあるこの建物が本殿です。

The shrine architecture here is also said to show almost no influence from the Asian mainland.

また、神社建築もアジア大陸の影響をほとんど受けていないと言われています。

On the buildings on the grounds are reconstructed once every 20 years in a tradition that has been carried out for over 1000 years.

敷地内の建物は、1000年以上続く伝統の中で、20年に一度、建て替えが行われています。

While there no specific order to visit the shrines, it is tradition to visit geku, the outer shrine, before going to naiku, the inner shrine.

参拝の順番に決まりはないが、外宮を参拝してから内宮に行くのが伝統です。

One of the highlights on the way to naiku is walking through oharaimachi, the traditional and lively approach to the inner shrine.

内宮に向かう途中、おはらい町という伝統的で賑やかな参道を歩くのも見どころのひとつです。

Shops offering traditional and local foods and souvenirs flank the street, and visitors can enjoy the traditional atmosphere before reaching naiku.

伝統的な郷土料理や土産物を扱う店が軒を連ね、内宮にたどり着くまでの間、昔ながらの雰囲気を楽しむことができます。

Beyond these steps is the main shine building where the sun goddess is enshrined.

この階段の先には、太陽の女神が祀られている本殿があります。

Now cameras are not allowed beyond this point, so I'll see you guys in a bit.

さて、この先はカメラ禁止なので、また少しお待ちください。

After that visit to the simple yet stately Isa shrines, I get back in my car and make my way to Ago Bay, at the southern end off the Shima Peninsula, where my accommodation for the night is located.

シンプルで重厚な伊佐神社を参拝した後、志摩半島の南端にある英虞湾に移動し、宿泊することにしました。

It's seafood on the menu for tonight, and I've got two of the Shima Peninsula's local delicacies, abalone and ise ebie.

今夜のメニューは海鮮で、志摩半島のご当地グルメである鮑と伊勢えびを2品いただきました。

Gonna take a bite.

一口食べてみます。

So fresh!

And that was day one of our 4-day road trip through central Japan.
