Do they think, do they feel and, if so, how?

犬は考え 感じるのか そうだとしたら どのようにするのか

So this afternoon, in my limited time,

ですから今日は 限られた時間の中で

I wanted to take the guesswork out of a lot of that

大いに当てずっぽうに想像して

by introducing you to two dogs,

２匹の犬をご紹介したいと思います

both of whom have taken the command "speak"

２匹とも“話してごらん”という号令に

quite literally.

文字通り従ってくれました

The first dog is the first to go,

最初の犬はこちら

and he is contemplating an aspect

彼は主人との関係性の

of his relationship to his owner,

ある側面について考えを巡らせており

and the title is "A Dog on His Master."

タイトルは 『犬による主人についての考察』です

"As young as I look,

「僕の方が若く見えはするが

I am growing older faster than he.

主人よりも速く年を取りつつある

Seven to one is the ratio, they tend to say.

犬の１歳は人間の７歳に あたるのだと人は言う

Whatever the number, I will pass him one day

数字はどうあれ 僕はいつか主人の歳を追い越し

and take the lead,

先導するのだ

the way I do on our walks in the woods,

林を散歩するときのように

and if this ever manages to cross his mind,

このことに主人が気付くときが訪れたら

it would be the sweetest shadow

雪や草原に映し出された

I have ever cast on snow or grass."

僕のどんな影よりも 甘やかなものになるだろう」

And our next dog

次の犬は

speaks in something called the revenant,

亡霊となって語りかけてきます

which means a spirit that comes back

犬の魂が再び主人に会いに

to visit you.

この世に戻ってきたのです

"I am the dog you put to sleep,

「俺はあんたに 安楽死させられた犬だ

as you like to call the needle of oblivion,

忘却の針とあんたが呼ぶところの物で

come back to tell you this simple thing:

簡単なことをひとつ教えに 戻ってきてやったよ

I never liked you."

あんたのことはずっと嫌いだった」

(Laughter)

(笑)

"When I licked your face,

「あんたの顔をなめるときは

I thought of biting off your nose.

いつも鼻をむしり取ってやろうと 思っていたし

When I watched you toweling yourself dry,

タオルであんたが体をふくのを見て

I wanted to leap and unman you with a snap.

飛びかかって がぶりと局部を 噛みちぎってやろうとも考えた

I resented the way you moved,

あんたの動き方も気に食わなかった

your lack of animal grace,

動物として品性を欠いているよ―

the way you would sit in a chair to eat,

椅子に座って 物を食べるときに

a napkin on your lap, a knife in your hand.

ひざにナプキンを乗せて ナイフを手にするなんてさ

I would have run away

逃げようとも思ったけれど

but I was too weak,

弱すぎて それはできなかった

a trick you taught me

芸も覚えさせられたよな

while I was learning to sit and heel

お座りして 足元にぴたりと付いたり

and, greatest of insults,

一番傷ついたのは

shake hands without a hand.

手がないのに 「握手」をさせられたことさ

I admit the sight of the leash would excite me,

確かに散歩用のリードを 見せられると興奮したけど

but only because it meant I was about to smell things

それはあんたが 触れたことのないものの

you had never touched.

匂いをかぐことができるからさ

You do not want to believe this,

信じないだろうけど

but I have no reason to lie:

嘘をつく理由はないんだからな

I hated the car, hated the rubber toys,

車もゴムのおもちゃも大嫌いだったし

disliked your friends, and worse, your relatives.

あんたの友達も嫌いだった 親戚はもっと嫌だった

The jingling of my tags drove me mad.

首輪の金属のタグがちりちり鳴って 頭がおかしくなりそうだった

You always scratched me in the wrong place."

あんたはいつも 気持ち良くない場所を撫でてきた」

(Laughter)

(笑)

"All I ever wanted from you was food and water

「あんたから得たかったのは

in my bowls.

食べ物と水だけさ

While you slept, I watched you breathe

あんたが寝ると 月が空に昇っていく間

as the moon rose in the sky.

あんたが寝息をたてるのを見ていた

It took all of my strength

頭をのけぞらせて

not to raise my head and howl.

吠えるのを我慢するのは それはそれは辛いんだ

Now, I am free of the collar,

もう首輪もない

free of the yellow raincoat,

黄色のレインコートもない

monogrammed sweater,

モノグラムのセーターも

the absurdity of your lawn,

あんたの庭の ばかばかしい芝生もない

and that is all you need to know about this place,

俺が今いる場所について あんたに言いたいのはそれだけさ

except what you already supposed

もうお分かりだろうし

and are glad it did not happen sooner,

今頃でよかったと思ってるだろうけど

that everyone here can read and write,

ここではみんな読み書きできるんだ

the dogs in poetry,

犬は詩を書き

the cats and all the others

猫や他の動物は

in prose."

散文を書くんだ」
