Sick Day.

病気の日。

One morning, Joe woke up with a sore elbow.

ある朝、ジョーは肘の痛みで目を覚ました。

He prodded it carefully with one finger.

指一本で丁寧に突いた。

Wow, that really hurt.

うわー、本当に痛かった。

Joe climbed out of bed and put on his dressing gown very, very carefully, so as not to juggle his bad elbow.

ジョーはベッドから出てきて、とても慎重にドレッシングガウンを着て、悪い肘をジャグリングしないようにした。

Then he went downstairs.

そして、下に降りていった。

Mom was in the kitchen searching for cereal in the cupboard.

ママは台所で食器棚の中のシリアルを探していました。

We're out of cornflakes again, she said.

またコーンフレークがなくなってしまった、と彼女は言った。

Not looking around.

周りを見ていない。

Mom, Joe began.

ママ、ジョーが始めた。

But at that moment, Bella came into the kitchen.

Joe tried to tell Mom about his elbow, but Mom was too worried about Bella.

Mom stayed home to look after Bella.

ママはベラの世話をするために家に残った。

Dad gave Joe a lift to school, and Joe tried to explain about his elbow.

パパがジョーを学校まで送ってくれて、ジョーは肘のことを説明しようとした。

I was playing football yesterday on.

昨日はオンでサッカーをしていました。

I banged it and it still hurts, he said.

叩いてみたけど、まだ痛いんだって。

Probably just a bruise, said Dad.

I hope Bella is better.

Soon she looked a bit feverish to me.

She leaned over to pick Bella's teddy bear off the floor, as she did so, she caught sight of something under the bed.

A huge pile of sweet wrappers.

And an empty box.

Bella, Mom cried.

Are those the sweets that aunt Jackie sent you and that you were supposed to save for your birthday?

ジャッキーが送ってきたお菓子じゃないお菓子は、誕生日のために取っておくはずだったものなのか？

Bella turned very red.

ベラは真っ赤になった。

I woke up early and felt hungry, she said.

An hour later, Mom and Bella were walking into school.

Bella's tummy was better, and Mom wanted to get back to work.

ベラのお腹の調子が良くなったので、ママは仕事に戻りたいと思っていました。

Mrs Smells, the head teacher, came running to meet them.

教頭のスメルズ夫人が駆けつけてきた。

Oh good, you're here, she said.

よかった、来てくれたんだね、と彼女は言った。

I think you need to go straight to Hospital.

病院に直行した方がいいと思います。

Hospital, said Mom, she's only eating too many sweets.

病院、ママはお菓子の食べ過ぎだと言っていた。

I'm not talking about Bella, said Mrs Males.

ベラの話ではありませんよ、とマレスさんは言いました。

I'm talking about Joe.

ジョーのことだ

Didn't you notice that he'd broken his elbow?

肘の骨折に気づかなかったのか？

Said Mom at the hospital, Mum and Joe had to sit in the waiting room until Joe could have his X ray.

病院でママが言うには、ジョーがX線を撮るまで、ママとジョーは待合室に座っていなければならなかった。

Why didn't you tell me?

なぜ私に言わなかったの？

Mom said I did try, said Joe, But you wouldn't listen.

Then my teacher noticed I couldn't move my arm at the hospital.

They were very kind to Joe.

They took an X ray of his arm on.

The doctor showed him the picture of the crack in his bone.

A nurse wrapped up Joe's elbow in a bandage.

看護師がジョーの肘を包帯で包んだ。

Then they put his arm in a sling.

そして、彼の腕をスリングに入れた。

Joe was sad that he wouldn't be able to play football for a few weeks, so Mom bought him a box of sweets from the hospital shop to cheer him up.

ジョーは数週間サッカーができないことを悲しんでいたので、ママが病院の売店から応援のためにお菓子の箱を買ってきてあげました。

I hope Bella doesn't steal any, said Joe, opening the box.

ベラが盗みをしなければいいが、とジョーは箱を開けて言った。

I don't think she will, said Mom, smiling.

I think she's had enough sweets to last her a long time.
