but he was often distracted from his prayers by the bustling city.

古都京都にて 敬虔な神道学者は 質素な生活を送っていましたが

He felt that his neighbors were polluting his soul,

祈りの最中 街の喧騒に しばしば気をとられていました

and he sought to perform some kind of personal harae—

彼は隣人たちに 自分の魂を 穢（けが）されていると感じ

a purification ritual that would cleanse his body and his mind.

自らの身を清めるため 祓（はらえ）を行うことにしました

He decided to travel to the revered Hie Shrine.

身と心を清める儀式のことです

The trip was an arduous climb that took all day.

彼は崇敬される日枝神社に 参詣することにしました

But he was glad for the solitude it afforded him,

その旅は 丸一日かかる きつい登りが続きました

and the peace he felt upon returning home was profound.

しかし 彼は旅によってもたらされる 孤独に喜びを感じ

The scholar was determined to maintain this clarity for as long as possible,

帰宅時に感じた心の平安は 深遠なものでした

and resolved to make this pilgrimage another 99 times.

その学者は できるだけ長く この明晰さを保つため

He would walk the path alone, ignoring any distractions in his quest for balance,

この参詣を あと99回 行うことを誓いました

and never straying from his purpose.

道を独りで歩み 心の安定を追求しながら雑念を振り払い

The man was true to his word, and as days stretched into weeks,

決して迷うことは ありませんでした

he walked through driving rain and searing sun.

その男は自分の誓いを守り 参詣が数日どころか数週間に及んでも

Over time, his devotion revealed the invisible world of spirits

激しい雨の中や 灼熱の太陽のもとを歩きました

which exists alongside our own.

時が経つにつれ 彼が一意専心する中で 現世とともに存在する―

He began to sense the kami, which animated the rocks underfoot,

目に見えない神の世界を 感じるようになりました

the breeze that cooled him, and the animals grazing in the fields.

彼は神の気配を感じるようになりました 足元の岩々や

Still he spoke to no one, spirit or human.

彼を冷やす風や野原で草を食む動物たち すべてに精気が宿りました

He was determined to avoid contact with those who had strayed

それでも彼は神とも人とも 誰とも話しませんでした

from the path and become polluted with kegare.

彼は道を踏み外して 穢れてしまった者たちとは

This taboo of defilement hung over the sick and deceased,

関わるまいと決意していました

as well as those who defiled the land or committed violent crimes.

穢れゆえに忌み嫌われるのは 病人や死者だけでなく

Of all of the threats to the scholar's quest for spiritual purity,

土地を汚した者や 凶悪犯罪を犯した者も同様でした

kegare was by far the greatest.

精神を清めんとする この学者に 降りかかる あらゆる脅威の中で

After paying his respects for the 80th time,

穢れは圧倒的でした

he set out for home once more.

80回目のお参りをした後

But as darkness fell, he heard strained sobs in the night air.

彼は再び家路につきました

The scholar tried to push forward and ignore the moans.

しかし暗くなるにつれ 彼は夜風の中に嗚咽を聞きました

But the desperate cries overwhelmed him.

学者は うめき声を無視し 突き進もうとしましたが

Grimacing, he left his path to follow the sound to its source.

その絶望的な叫び声に 圧倒されてしまいました

He soon came to a cramped cottage, with a woman crumpled outside.

顔をしかめながら 彼は道を外れ 声が聞こえる方をたどることにしました

Filled with pity, the scholar implored the woman to share her sorrow.

彼がやがて窮屈な小屋に着くと 外には女がくずおれていました

She explained that her mother had just died—

憐れみを抱いた学者は その女性に 彼女の悲しみを教えてくれと懇願しました

but no one would help her with the burial.

彼女は母親が亡くなったばかり にもかかわらず

At that news, his heart sank.

埋葬の手伝いをしてくれる人が いないと言いました

Touching the body would defile his spirit,

そう聞いて 彼の心は沈みました

draining his life force and leaving him forsaken by the kami.

遺体に触れれば 彼の魂が穢れてしまい

But as he listened to her cries, his sympathy soared.

生命力は奪われ 神に見捨てられてしまうでしょう

And so, they buried the old woman together,

しかし 彼女の嘆きに耳を傾けるうちに 女性への同情心があふれてきました

to ensure her safe passage into the spirit world.

そして 母親が霊界へ無事に行けるよう 彼らは老婆を埋葬しました

The burial was complete, but the taboo of death weighed heavily on the scholar.

埋葬は終えたものの 死の禁忌が学者に重くのしかかりました

How could he have been so foolish,

彼の最も重要なルールを無視し

to shirk his most important rule and corrupt his divine journey?

神聖な旅路を堕落させてしまうなんて なんと愚かなことをしたのでしょう

After a tormented night,

一晩苦しんだ後

he resolved to go back to the shrine to cleanse himself.

彼は身を清めるために 神社に戻ることを決意しました

To his surprise, the usually quiet temple was filled with people,

驚いたことに いつもは静かな社が 人でいっぱいになっていました

all gathering around a medium who communicated directly with the kami.

神と直に言葉を交わす祈祷師の周りに 人が集まっていたのです

The man hid himself, not daring approach in case anyone glimpse his polluted soul.

男は身を隠し 穢れた魂を 誰にも悟られぬよう近寄りませんでした

But the medium had other ways of seeing, and called him forward from the crowd.

しかし 祈祷師は別の方法で見透して 彼に群衆の前に出るよう言いました

Ready to be forsaken, the scholar approached the holy woman.

見捨てられる覚悟で 学者は聖なる女性に近づきました

But the medium merely smiled.

しかし 祈祷師はただ微笑みました

She took his impure hand in hers,

彼女は彼の不純な手を取り

and whispered a blessing only he could hear—

彼にしか聞こえない 祝福の言葉をささやき

thanking him for his kindness.

彼の優しさに感謝しました

In that moment, the scholar discovered a great spiritual secret:

その瞬間 学者は 大いなる神聖な真義を見いだしました

contamination and corruption are two very different things.

汚染と堕落は 全く別物だということです

Filled with insight, the scholar set himself back on his journey.

洞察に満たされた学者は 再び自らの旅路に身を投じました

But this time, he stopped to help those he met.

しかし 今回は出会った人たちを 助けるために足を止めました

He began to see the beauty of the spirit world everywhere he went,

彼は行く先々で霊界の美しさが 見えるようになっていきました

even in the city he'd previously shunned.

以前は敬遠していた街でもです

Others cautioned that he risked kegare—

他の人たちは 彼が穢れの危険を 冒していると警告しましたが

but he never told them why he so freely mingled

病人や恵まれない人たちと 自由に接する理由を

with the sick and disadvantaged.

彼は決して語りませんでした

For he knew that people could only truly understand harae

人々が祓を真に理解するには

through a journey of their own.

自ら旅をするしかないと 彼は知っていたのでした
