子を持つ親にとり 最悪な出来事が起きました

my phone rings at 4:30 in the morning.

あの日 2012年7月20日

It's my son Alex's girlfriend, Amanda,

早朝の４時30分に電話が鳴りました

saying hysterically,

息子アレックスの彼女 アマンダからでした

"Tom, Tom, there's been a shooting,

狂乱状態でこう言います

and they dragged me out of the theater.

「トム トム 乱射事件があったの

They wouldn't let me stay.

私は 映画館の外に引きずり出されて

I wanted to [stay], but they dragged me out."

残らせてくれなかった

I say to Amanda,

残りたかったけど 無理やり外に出されたの」

"Amanda, are you OK? Have you been hurt?"

アマンダに聞きます

And she said no, that she was fine,

「大丈夫かい？ 怪我はなかった？」

that Alex had saved her life.

返ってきた答えは 「ええ 私は大丈夫

I then say,

アレックスが助けてくれたから」と

"Amanda, where's Alex?"

そこで聞きます

And she says, sobbing,

「アマンダ アレックスはどこだい？」

"I don't know, we can't find him.

すると彼女は 泣きじゃくりながら言います

They dragged me out of the theater.

「わからない 見つからないの

They made me leave.

映画館から引きずり出されて

He was shot.

引き離されてしまった

I tried to wake him up, but I couldn't wake him up.

アレックスが撃たれて

He wouldn't get up.

呼びかけたけど 反応がなかった

They dragged me away. I didn't want to leave him."

目を開けてくれなかった

And I say to Amanda,

アレックスから離れたくなかったのに 引き離されてしまったの」

"The last time you saw Alex,

そこで私はアマンダに聞きます

was he bleeding?

「最後に見たとき

Did you have any of his blood on you?"

アレックスは出血していた？

And she cries, "Yeah, a lot,"

君にも血は付いた？」と

and breaks down.

彼女は泣きながら言います 「ええ それはもうたくさん」

Alex loved Amanda.

アマンダは泣き崩れます

And he was one of the most honorable men on earth,

アレックスはアマンダを愛しており

and at the age of 24,

この世で 最も高潔な男の１人でした

he had to make the decision to risk his life

in order to ensure she would live.

I knew in my heart if he couldn't get up,

アマンダの命を守ったのです

he was dead.

I had just arrived

the night before

with my wife Caren

１週間の休暇を過ごすため ハワイに着いたばかりでした

for a week's vacation in Hawaii.

We were literally

3,300 miles away.

無駄なことでした

Caren and I frantically started calling his cell phone,

to no avail.

その後 メディアを見ても

We left multiple messages.

目にした情報は全て

We then turned to the media.

銃撃犯に関するものか ブービートラップを仕掛けた

But all we could find

犯人の自宅についてでした

was information on the murderer

オーロラ警察署にも 電話をしてみましたが

and his booby-trapped apartment.

何もわかりませんでした

We tried calling the Aurora police station,

今考えると 仕方のないことです

but it was impossible to get an answer.

警察も 対応に追われていたのです

But in hindsight, it was understandable.

死者は12名 負傷者は70名にも のぼりましたから

They were dealing with

現場は悲惨な状況で

12 dead, 70 injured,

警察も 負傷者を パトカーの後部座席に乗せて

the carnage so bad,

病院に搬送したほどです

the police had to bring some of the victims to the hospitals

救急車が足りていなかったのです

in the backs of their police cars,

恐ろしく 混沌とした状況でした

because they had run out of ambulances.

アレックスには ２度と会えませんでした

It was a horrific and chaotic scene.

損傷があまりにひどかったため

We would never see Alex again,

母親である妻にさえ 見せられませんでした

his injuries so severe

その姿が 脳裏に焼き付くことを 恐れたためです

I had to shield even his mom

でも ある人物の顔を 何度も目にすることになるのです

from looking upon him,

息子を殺した犯人です

for fear that would be the lasting image of him in her mind.

彼の写真を いたるところで見ました

But you know who we would see again and again?

ある記事は ６パラグラフの長さですが

The murderer.

実に41回も犯人の名前が出てきました

His pictures were everywhere.

メディアが 彼を有名人に仕立てたのです

One article was six paragraphs long

けれども 私の長男 アレックスの名は

and featured his name 41 times.

英雄なのに

The media had made him famous.

事件当初の報道には ありませんでした

But my firstborn son, Alex,

妻と私は 無差別銃乱射事件の報道には

a hero,

コロンバイン事件以来ずっと 問題があったことに すぐに気づきました

was absent from those initial reports.

私たちは色々調べはじめ

Caren and I immediately realized that there was something wrong

気づいたのです

with the way the media responds to these random mass shootings

メディアの報道の仕方を

since Columbine.

変えることができれば

We started doing research,

銃乱射事件の件数を減らし

and we realized

命を救えます

that if we could change

the way the media reports,

詳しく話しましょう

we could reduce the amount of shootings

無差別銃乱射事件の犯人は ほぼ誰もが

and save lives.

ある共通点を持っています

何だかわかる方はおられますか？

Let me explain.

悪名をとどろかせたいのです

Almost every single random mass shooter

有名になりたいのです

has something in common.

実際 銃撃犯は 自らそれを告白しています

Can anybody guess what that is?

実際 銃撃犯は 自らそれを告白しています

They want notoriety.

サンディフック小学校銃乱射事件では

They want to be famous.

銃撃犯がスプレッドシートに

In fact,

それまでに起きた大量殺人と その犠牲者数を記録していました

these murderers are telling us this themselves.

ナイトクラブで起きた オーランド銃乱射事件では

The Sandy Hook murderer

銃撃犯は 地元のテレビ局に 電話をしました

kept a spreadsheet

犯行現場からですよ

of previous mass murderers and their number of kills.

フェイスブックでの拡散を確認するため 犯行を一時的に中断しました

The Orlando Pulse nightclub murderer

パークランドの高校での事件では

called a local news station --

銃撃犯が撮影したビデオを SNSに投稿し 声明を出しています

during his attack! --

「ニュースで俺を見たら あいつのことだとわかるはずだ」と

and then stopped to check Facebook to see if he'd gone viral.

オーロラ映画館での事件の銃撃犯は 精神科医に話したそうです

The Parkland murderer

「自分は 科学分野で名を馳せることは できっこないと分かっている

recorded and posted

でも 人を殺せば有名になれる」と

a video

でも 人を殺せば有名になれる」と

stating,

この傾向が最も顕著に現れているのが

"When you see me on the news, you'll know who I am."

アムクワ・コミュニティ・カレッジで 起きた事件です

The Aurora theater murderer told his psychiatrist

犯人は とある大量殺人犯について 自身のブログに

that he recognized he couldn't make an impact on the world in science,

こう記しています

but he could become famous

「彼のような人間は 皆 孤独で名も知られないけど

by blowing people up.

ちょっとした流血騒ぎでも起こせば

And most telling,

全世界に その存在が知れ渡ることに 気付いた」

the Umpqua Community College murderer

誰の気にもとめられなかった人物が 今や 誰もに知られる存在になり

wrote on his blog about a previous mass murderer,

その顔が 画面に 次々と映し出される

saying,

世界中の人が その名を口にする

"I've noticed that people like him

それが１日にして起きるのです

are all alone and unknown,

殺した数が多ければ多いほど

but when they spill a little blood,

注目度も上がるかのようです

the whole world knows who they are."

今話したのは ほんの数例に過ぎません

A man who was known by no one is now known by everyone,

例をあげたら 枚挙にいとまがありません

his face splashed across every screen,

こうした銃撃犯は 世にその名を知らしめたいと述べています

his name on the lips

今までに殺人を犯した者と同様に 有名になりたいのです

of everyone on the planet,

メディアは まさに銃撃犯が求める― 悪名を拡散することを

all in one day.

叶え続けています

It seems like the more people you kill,

銃規制論争は 感情に大きく訴え

the more you're in the limelight.

また 精神疾患の問題は とても複雑です

These are just a few examples.

いずれも 是正には時間を要します

I could go on and on.

だからといって 殺りくを減らすのに

These murderers are telling us they want to be famous

法律を必要としません

like the murderers before them,

必要なのは マスメディアの制作側と視聴者が

and the media continues to give them exactly what they seek:

良心に基づいて行動し

notoriety.

悪名を拡散するのをやめることです

The gun debate is very emotional,

（拍手）

and our mental health issues are very complicated.

ですから 命を救うために 妻と一緒に

Both will take time to correct.

「No Notoriety（悪名を広めるな）」を 発足し

But to reduce the carnage,

地域社会を守るため

we don't need an act of Congress.

調査に裏付けられた原則に従った報道を

What we need is an act of conscience

メディアに求める活動を推進しています

on the producers and consumers of mass media

１つ目に

to remove the reward of notoriety.

So to save lives,

Caren and I launched "No Notoriety,"

by adhering to these research-backed principles.

見出しには絶対に出さず

One: report all the facts

and motivational profile of these shooters,

but minimize their names and images,

unless they're at large.

Two: limit the use of the shooter's name

never in the headlines

and no pictures in prominent locations.

誤解のないように言うと

表現の自由の侵害にはあたりません

既にあるガイドラインの活用を お願いしているにすぎません

Refuse to publish any self-serving material

To be clear:

被害者の身の安全を守ります

this is not an infringement

on anyone's First Amendment rights.

This is not censorship.

この様な メディアによる 責任ある慣例は

We are merely asking the media

公共の安全を保護するもので

to leverage guidelines they already have in place.

国民の知る権利を 脅かすことは一切ありません

For example,

But as much as we want the media to change,

they are for-profit organizations.

聞くのをやめてください

They won't change unless we hold them accountable.

The media makes their money

また 記事を拡散しないでください

from advertising

そのかわり 報道機関に投書して 意見を寄せてください

based on the number of viewers and clicks.

プロデューサー、編集者 局長、CEO宛にです

If we can reduce the number of viewers and clicks on any subject,

該当番組のスポンサー名を控え

the media will change the way they report on it.

CEO宛に投書してください

So the next time you see any media organization --

なぜなら 私たちが一丸となれば

print, digital, radio or television --

利益追求の代わりに 公共の安全を守るよう

gratuitously leveraging the names and images of these shooters,

メディアに対し 働きかけることができるからです

stop watching,

アレックスは戻ってきませんから

stop listening,

私の家族にとっては手遅れです

stop clicking,

でも 何もせずに 被害者の仲間入りをしないでください

stop liking

誰も被害者になりたくないはずです

and stop sharing.

代償が高すぎます

Write to the producers,

まだ被害者となっていない方なら

editors, station managers and CEOs

まだ間に合います

of these news organizations.

私たちには 無差別銃乱射事件の 件数を減らせる力があります

Take note of the advertisers who support those segments

それを活用しましょう

and write to their CEOs.

of public safety,

not profits.

It's too late for Alex,

and it's too late for my family.

But please don't join our club by inaction,

the club nobody wants to join.

The due's too high.

Because it's not too late

for people who aren't victims yet.

We have the power

to reduce random mass shootings.

Let's use it.
