It all started with silk

私は、今、多くの人々が、まさに近代日本が始まった場所と考えている

I'm at the Tomioka Silk Mill in Gunma prefecture where many people say

群馬県の富岡製糸工場にいます

modern Japan was born.

貴方は、何故、日本が世界で群を抜く高品質の品々を作り上げる

Have you ever wondered why Japan has such state-of-the-art

世界の最先端の技術立国となり得たのか考えたことがありますか？

technology creating some of the world's highest quality goods

その答えを得るためにここへやって来ました。また、何故、この場所が世界遺産に選ばれたかを知るためです

Yeah

絹工場は、今はもう、操業していません

That's why I'm here, and that's why this place is a world heritage site

しかし、ここに日本の近代化をスタートする種が播かれ、それが今日の近代日本にまで成長したのです

now the silk mill is no longer in operation

今日の日本の技術の発展は凄まじいものがあります

But it's the seed that has grown into the Japan that we know today.

様々な分野で、非常に効率的で素晴らしいものです

Today's tech in Japan is super fast

ロボット産業も日本の得意な分野の一つです

super cool very efficient and everywhere

また、毎日お世話になるトイレや自動販売機の様な様々な物にも及んでいます

Robotics is one of the many areas Japan is excelled, but

ゲームや健康産業の分野でも先頭を走っていますし、寿司店でも先端技術が導入されています

it's also in everyday items like toilets and vending machines

その素晴らしい技術は、最初に言いましたように絹からスタートしています

The gaming and health industries are also at the top, and the tech in sushi shops is pretty good too

工場へ行く前に、東側の製糸繭蔵と設備エリアに行って見ましょう

And yes as I said in the beginning, it all started with silk.

日本の”絹の道”である上武地域を見てみましょう

Before we go through the mills east cocoon warehouse and facility areas,

東京と横浜は日本最大の都会センター並びに港ですが

Let's look at the Jobu region with Japan Silk Road lies

絹工場は利根川を上った群馬県の日本アルプスの麓にあります

Tokyo and Yokohama are Japan's biggest urban center and port and the silk mill is

上武地域は利根川沿いに広がっています

Located up the Tone River to the foothills of the Japanese Alps in Gunma prefecture

高崎はその地域最大の都市で、そこから絹工場がある下仁田や富岡を目指します

The Jobu region straddles the Tone River

そこが、日本の工業化が始まった場所です

Takasaki is the largest city and from here. We'll head to Shimonita and Tomioka where the silk mill is located.

絹工場は１９８７年に操業を停止し、２０１４年に世界遺産に認定されました

This is where Japan's industrialization began.

日本の工業史における多大な貢献に対して世界遺産に認定されたのです

The mill ceased operations in 1987 and it was declared a World Heritage Site in 2014

この工場が日本の近代化の端緒となりました

because of its significance in history to the country

技術革新に対する多大な期待が生まれました

This mill marked Japan's entry to a modern industrialized era

日本産の絹製品は欧米が最も欲しがった物です

the point where a great desire for technological innovations spawned

そして上武地域は投資するのに理想的な場所でした

Silk was the popular product made in Japan that the west craved the most

というのも、そこには、既に絹生産の基礎があったからなのです

and the Jobu region was the perfect place to invest in

工場は一般に公開され、大変いい状態で保存されています

since it already had the foundations for silk production

製糸プラント内の機械も３０年前に閉鎖された時のまま、保存されています

The mill is open to the public and has been well preserved

それでは、製糸プラントの中に入ってみましょう

Even the machinery in the silk reeling plant is as it was when it closed three decades ago

この工場は繭から絹糸を巻き取る（取り出す）ために使われていました

So now we are inside the silk reeling plant

富岡工場で生産が停止された１９８７年まで

This factory was used to reel the silk from the cocoons,

ここの全ての機械が使われていました

and we have all the machines that were used here until

明治時代初期、日本が鎖国下の封建体制から近代体制に変えようとした時

1987 the year when the Tomika's silk mill stopped production

日本政府は絹織物のハイテクを使った工業生産技術の導入をフランスに頼みました

In the early Meiji era when Japan changed from an isolated feudal country to a modern one

絹の工業生産技術が労働者に浸透して、技術的に成熟するにつれ、生糸の大量生産が必要になってきた

the government turned to France for silk making expertise in high-tech machinery

そして、世界からの絹商品と高度の要求に答えることは、著しく困難な仕事であった

That know-how evolved into workers perfecting the skills needed to make raw silk

日本を大成功に導いたのは、まさに絹産業であった

an extremely difficult task for a commodity and high demand worldwide

絹の大量生産以前、日本の絹は世界的に見て、豪華で高品質であった

It was silk that made Japan great

容易に手に入るようになった後も、日本の絹は信じられないくらいの高品質を維持していた

Before mass production Japanese silk was a luxury good worldwide a

日本は絹産業を１１５年間、 牽引してきた

and after it became more affordable still at incredible quality

ヨーロッパから輸入されたハイテク機械が、日本の工業生産の最新鋭技術化へのスタートになったのである

Japan led the silk industry for 115 years.

そして、世界のトップになる望みの達成に拍車をかけた

The high-tech machinery here imported from Europe marked the start of Japan's desire for state-of-the-art technology

もう一度日本を偉大な国に！

and fueled a desire to be at the top

絹産業の発展と共に？

Make Japan great again

これらの生き物は特別な栄養素をかじって成長しているカイコです

with silk?

これらは大変繊細で卵から繭になるまで育てるのが非常に困難です

these creatures are silkworms nibbling on special nutrition bars

しかし、日本の生産者たちは大変上手にやってのけます

They're extremely delicate and hard to cultivate from egg to cocoon

しかし、なぜここに絹工場を建てたのでしょうか？機械の燃料である石炭が豊富で横浜の港も近いからです

But Japanese workers were good at it - really good at it

綺麗な水が流れる川があり、荒船風穴のお蔭で卵を育てるのに、必要な場所を十分低温に保つことが出来ます

Why was the mill here? It had coal to power the machines, close enough to the port of Yokohama

卵を冷やすための場所を確保できたという事が、絹産業が何故、ここで盛んになったかという理由です。

Had a river with clean water and was cool enough to cultivate the eggs thanks to the Arafune Cold Storage

真夏の一番熱い日々でさえ、

This is the reason why the silk industry thrived here because I had a place like this where they could keep it cool

８月の温度でも、ここでは涼しいのです

Even in the hottest of days in the summer

そのため、育種の回数を増やし、より多くの繭を生産することが可能になったのです

Even in August the temperatures are cool here

これらの穴の中には、日本中の４０以上の県から取り寄せた繭が保存されている建物があります

which allowed an increase in the number of breeding seasons and more cocoon production

今日では、カイコはこの町にとって別の意味で大切です

Inside these holes were buildings that housed silkworm cocoons from over 40 prefectures in Japan the largest site in the country

工場はUNESCOの世界遺産に２０１４年登録されました

These days the silkworms are now important to the town in another way

カイコが帰ってきました

with the mill becoming a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2014

しかし、貴方が想定した物とは異なります

The silkworm chocolate is a popular gift locally made chocolate that really does look like the real thing

How could I not buy some

工場の前の通りにはカイコのお菓子を売っている店が沢山あります

green tea chocolate flavored leaf and cookies and cream tasting worm cocooned in a wrapper to keep it fresh

これは甘い小豆ペーストが中に入っています

The street in front of the mill has a lot of shops selling silkworm confections

これは本物の繭だ

This one with sweet red bean auzuki paste inside

ここ富岡でいかにして絹の品質を保ったのか不思議に思うでしょう

Here are the real silkworm cocoons

１９世紀から２０世紀初頭にかけて

And it makes you wonder how the quality of the silk was here in Tomioka

富岡は世界に誇る最高の生糸を製造していた。富岡ブランドは世界中で知られていた。

in the 19th and early 20th century

工場の事務所で、この町で作られた幾つかの最高の絹製品を見せてもらいました

Tomioka produced the best raw silk in the world. The Tomioka brand was well known.

いなづかさんは富岡絹ブランドの責任者です

At the mill office, I was shown some real high-quality silk made in the town

私は、比較の為、インターネットで買った絹製品と思われる品物を持ってきました

Inazuka-san is in charge of the Tomioka silk brand

私はいなづかさんに絹を分析する前に，目を閉じるようお願いしました

To compare I brought my own assumed-to-be silk items purchased from the internet to see if it was real

どんな絹製品をインターネット買ったのか？

I asked Inazuka-san to close her eyes before her silk analysis

私が見つけることが出来る全てです

WHAT "SILK" ITEM DID I BUY OFF THE INTERNET?

しかし、これは絹で出来ていますか？

It's all I can find

いなづかさんに品物を確かめるのを手伝って欲しいとお願いしました

but was it silk?

たった、１０ドルの品物ですから、もちろん、怪しいですよね

I asked Shinozuka-san to help me investigate the item

詳細な調査の結果

it only cost me $10, so of course I was suspicious

絹ではありませんー偽物でした

after a close examination

本物の手触りを確かめた後、

It was ruled not silk - an impostor

何故、偽物だったかという事が簡単に分かりました

and after feeling the real deal

私には違いが分かります。本物は実に素晴らしい

It was easy to know why.

本物の絹は本当に、本当に素晴らしい。触った時、本当に滑らかで、涼しげで、まさに絹です

I can tell the difference, it's really beautiful!

今日、この地域での絹製品の生産は限られていますが、品質は最高です。

Real silk just feels really really good. When you touch it, you know -- it's smooth. It's cool. It's silk.

そうでなければ、それは偽物です

Silk production here is limited these days, but the quality is still high if it's not it probably isn't real silk

富岡製糸工場は、最初から殆んど失敗するところでした

if it's not it probably isn't real silk.

日本とフランスの文化上の酷い誤解のためでした

The Tomioka silk mill almost failed from the start

工場が建設された時、ここには外国人は一人もいませんでした。そしてフランス人が絹生産用の機械と赤ワインを持ち込んだ時、

because of a terrible misunderstanding between the Japanese and French cultuers

現場の技師であったポールブルナン

When the mill was constructed there weren't any foreigners here and when the French came they brought the silk machines

工場の労働者を雇う仕事が出来なくなってしまった

and red wine

地元の人々が信じてしまった

Paul Brunant was the engineer on the ground

彼が吸血鬼だと

The task to hire the workers for the mill became impossible

血を吸う吸血鬼だと

when the locals believed that he was ...

誰もこのようなグラスから赤ワインを飲むのを見たことがありません

Is it true? Are you vampires?

まるで血のようです

A blood sucking vampire.

誤解により、血に飢えてるフランス人と働くことを望む人など誰もいません

I mean - no one had ever seen red wine drunk from a glass like this

工場の日本人筆頭マネジャーが彼自身の

it looked like blood

１４歳の娘をそのポストに雇い入れるまで、吸血外国人の神話は消え去れなかった

The misunderstanding led to no one wanted to work for the bloodthirsty French mill

この話はこの工場で好んで語られる逸話の一つです

until the mills Japanese head manager hired his own

近くの下仁田は”レトロタウン”というニックネームを付けられています

Fourteen-year-old daughter to a position quickly the myth of blood sucking foreigners was dispelled

それは、この町の様子が長い間、ほとんど変わってないからです

The story is one of the favorites to tell at the mill

絹織物工場が閉鎖された時、町の経済は酷く落ち込みました

Nearby is Shimonita nicknamed RETRO TOWN

そして、後に残ったのは何十年か前の日本のスナップショットそのものでした

because it hasn't changed much - in a long time

ここの通りを歩いて日本の通りがかってどんな様子だったかを味わう事は本当の意味でおもてなしです

When the mill closed the local economy shrunk

下仁田はソース味でパン粉を塗したとんかつが有名です

and what has been left behind is a snapshot of Japan from decades ago

わたしは巨大な下仁田かつ丼ランチを食べるため、きよしや食堂に連れていかれました

It's a real treat to walk the streets here and see what Japan used to look like

店の中も町の様子と大差ありません

Shimonita is famous for its sauce flavored breaded pork cutlets, and I was taken to

ランチを待っている間、私は琴さんに下仁田レトロタウンの命名の訳を訪ねました

Kiyoshiya Shokudo (restaurant) for a massive Shimonita Katsudon lunch

昭和の初め

The inside hasn't changed much like the town

下仁田のこの通りは大変繁盛していました

While waiting for lunch to arrive I got a chance to ask Koto-san about Shimonita retro town name

待ちの人達はこのまま昭和のにぎやかだった頃の町筋をそのまま置いておくか

In the early Showa era,

それとも、新しく、綺麗な街に生まれ変わるか、悩みました

there was a very flourishing street around here

結果として昭和の古い街並みのまま残して、

and the town people considered seriously whether it should be preserved as it was,

アピールポイントとしていくことになりました。そこでレトロを強調することになりました

or be renewed to a more modern one

お待たせしました

people preferred living in the old-fashioned town rather than its modern counterpart

はい、どうぞ！

Thanks to people's decision, "Retro Town" comes to be one of the strong points of Shimonita

This is the "Shimonita Katsudon" locally made breaded pork cutlets with sauce on rice

彼は、このようにして豚肉を柔らかくしています

All of the shops in Shimonita have incredibly delicious foods

この店が何十年か前に開いて以来、これで叩いて豚肉を柔らかにしています

It's so good!

この辺りは、また、こんにゃくで有名です。ゴムの様に弾力のある食べ物で、多くの日本料理で使われます

Here's how he makes the pork tender

こんにゃくはこんにゃく芋から作られますが、ソースや材料などから味を吸い込みます

It's tenderized like this since the shop opened decades ago.

今日はなんという驚くべき冒険をおこなったのでしょうか？まるで、タイムスリップをしたようでした

The area is also famous for konnyaku a rubbery food that is used in a lot of Japanese cuisine

It's made from the konjac potato, and it takes the flavor of the sauce or ingredients around it

上武の絹街道と富岡の旅に出かけてください

What an amazing adventure we had today it was like taking a trip back in time
