これは私が一年前に初めてフィルムに収めたマンホールの蓋です。
This was the first manhole I filmed a year ago
札幌雪祭りの後、この冒険に着手しました。
when I started this adventure after the Sapporo Snow Festival.
サッポロのマンホールは1878年に建設された時計塔に特徴づけられます。
Sapporo's manhole features the clock tower built in 1878,
町のシンボル
a symbol of the city.

On another location shoot,
島根県の美保関で見つけたものです。
I found this one in Mihonoseki in Shimane prefecture.
美保関は眠気を催すような漁村です。
Mihonoseki is sleepy fishing village
人口も少なく、
with a very small population
しかし、そこのマンホールの蓋は、非常に美しいものです。
but their manholes are beautiful.
鯛漁と
It features a red snapper
美保神社を守る港として有名です。
and the port which protects Miho Shrine.

In Kichijoji, Tokyo,

I found firefighter characters on the cover,
埼玉県にはいくつかの色付けされた蓋があります。
There is a fire hydrant below ground at the spot.

Why do Japanese Manholes have designs?

大きな都市に必ずしも綺麗なマンホールカバーがあるわけではない
Something I want to emphasize to everyone is that
もし、あなたが田舎に行ったなら
bigger cities do not mean prettier manhole covers
その地域に独得のデザインを見つけるだろう
but if you go to the rural areas
本当に沢山あります
you'll find designs that are unique to that area
都市部よりも図と多くのデザインがある
There are so many!
貴方が地方に行ったら
So rather than urban areas,
地方の文化をデザイン化している
if you go to the countryside, you'll find
その地方で誇りにしている物や
local culture in the designs
その地方で
or things the locals are proud of
もしそのようなものを探せば、
in their town
きっと素晴らしい発見があるでしょう
If you look for that,

you'll find some great discoveries.

MANHOLE COVER CASTING FACTORY
内部を見せてもらうために
I visited the Nagashima Imono Manhole Casting Plant
どのようにしてこの素晴らしいデザインが作られるかを知るために
to get an inside look
長嶋さんは工場を案内してくれました
on how they make these amazing designs are made.
鉄屑を大きな炉で溶かします
Nagashima-san gave me a tour around the factory.
溶解する鉄の輝きには魅了されます
Scrap steel is melted in a big furnace.
鉄屑は混ぜられ約三千度で溶解されます
The glow is mesmerizing.
カガライトが鋼滓を取り除くために加えられます
It's alloyed and melted at temperatures around 3000C
溶融金属から不純物を取り除く
Kagalite is added to remove the slag
カガライトと炭素不純物を結合させた後、職人がそれを集めます
or impurities from the molten metal.
そして、除きます
Workers collect it after the carbon impurities bond with the kagalite
あとに残ったものは、溶融残渣の塊です
and remove it.
用意が出来たら、移し替えようのひしゃくに注ぎます
Left behind is a sparkling gob of molten waste.
職人はさらに炭素不純物を除きます
When ready, it's poured into a transfer ladel.
それらを鋳型のある場所に移します
Workers remove more carbon impurities,
鋳型が用意されています
cover and transfer it to the casting area
砂で作られた鋳型はフラスコと呼ばれる箱に入れられてます
where the molds are waiting.
さらに、大きな金属製のフレームに入っています
The sand shell molds are placed into boxes called flasks
鋳型にはけ上げ板と通気口がついており
then a large metal frame.
溶融した鉄を入れた時、ガスと熱を逃がす役割をします
The molds has risers and vents
ここで鋳型の上部と底部が機械で合わされます
which allow the gases and heat to escape.
溶融した金属が鋳型の中に注ぎ込まれます
Here the top and bottom of the mold are put together by the machine.
マンホールの蓋が十分冷えるまで、およそ一時間半かかります
The molten metal is poured into the mold.
鋳型から外ずし
It takes about an hour and a half before the manhole covers and cool enough
振動する鉄格子の中に置かれます
to be removed from the mold
鋳型から砂を落とすために
and then placed on a vibrating grate
新しいカバーは二、三回たたかれます
to remove the sand from the mold.
金属から砂を除くために
The new cover is given a few hits
そして、冷やされます
to break up the sand told from the metal.
この段階では、まだ、かなり熱いです
It's placed on the side to cool.
室温まで下げるためには、丸一日かかります
There still pretty hot at this stage
しかし、次の処理が待っています
and it can take a whole day before they're at room temperature,
ショットブラスティング
but the next stage is right here
マンホールの蓋はこの強化箱の中に入れられます
SHOT BLASTING
そこで蓋は金属ベアリングで打たれます
The manhole covers are lifted into this reinforced box
蓋を磨き、強化するために
where they're shot with metal bearings that
最終工程の場所までリフトで運ばれます
polish and strengthen the cover.
そこでの最初の工程は鋳込の残渣を取り除くことです
They're then lifted to the finishing area
次に、それらを音楽的才能の有る機械で運ばれます
where the first step is to remove any leftover molding.
丁度のサイズになるよう削られます
Next, they're moved by this musically talented machine
金属片は再利用され、再び使われます
for sizing where they get shaved down to exact measurements.
最後にコーティングされ、乾かされ、町へと運ばれます
The metalic dust is recycled and used again.
あるいは、記念用のマンホールカバーとして着色されます
Finally they're coated, dried and moved for transfer to the cities
長嶋鋳物は全国のマンホールカバーを作っています
or painted for commemorative manhole covers.
これらの着色は消防士にとって重要です
Nagashima Imono makes manhole covers that go all over the country.
地下の消火栓を見つけるために
The colors on these are important to fire fighters
水のシンボル、水の字を真ん中に
to find underground hydrants.
マンホールを着色することは、番号を書くようなものです
The symbol for water, mizu (水) is in the middle.
正確な形を得るために色を混ぜる必要があります
Painting a manhole is like paint by numbers.
これは宮城県の白石市のマンホールです
You have to mix the colors to get the right shade.
白石城は14世紀に建てられました
Here's a manhole from Shiroishi City in Miyagi Prefecture
そして、1875年に壊されました。
Shiroishi Casle was founded in the 14th century
1995年に再建
demolished in 1875
今では、市の誇りのシンボルです
then rebuilt in 1995
青色は空を表します
now a symbol of pride for the city.
マンホールを完全に塗ることは大切です
The blue pain will become the sky.
一つ間違えば、書き直しです
It's important for the manhole to be painted perfectly.
乾かすのに24時間かかります
One mistake and it has to be redone.
新しいマンホールの蓋は可愛らしいプラスティック上に焼き付けたものです
It takes 24 hours for the paint to dry.
しかし、私には手書きの記念マンホールの蓋の方が
Newer manhole covers may have a lovely plastic printed finished
素晴らしいものに思われます
but to me, the painted commemorative manhole covers
兎に角、とても重いです
are just simply more stunning.
50キロの重さがあります
They're also pretty heavy!
持ち上げようとしましたが
They can weight as much as 50kg.

I asked him how they got into this business.

As a recovery from the war,

I can see that. Sewers are a dirty place so —

if the manhole cover is pretty — it's sort of better.

Right. The image of the industry is improved by it.

Art collectors everywhere take notice
