I created this project, this photographic performance art

私はこのプロジェクトを作りました この写真パフォーマンスアートを

project, a number of years ago.

At one point, I was so exhausted.

ある時、私はとても疲れてしまいました。

I was traveling all night, and I sort of like fell over.

I'm so dead, like dead, exhausted.

And my friend took a picture.

I posted it.

And for some reason, people were like,

this is just really funny.

I thought, yeah, I mean, that's cool,

と思ったんだけど、そうだよね、カッコいいよね。

but if I'm going to put something out into the world,

でも、何かを世に出すなら

and then also call it art or talk

それをアートと呼んだり、トークと呼んだりして

about it through the lens of art,

芸術のレンズを通して

I want it to be meaningful and powerful and enjoyable.

意味があって迫力があって楽しいものにしたい。

And I was like, I can't just take a silly picture.

とか、くだらない写真が撮れないとか。

So I created this world of STEFDIES.

ということで、このSTEFDIESの世界を作ってみました。

I never want it to be confused with that I'm

私は決して混同されたくないのです

making fun of mortality.

死亡率をバカにして

STEFDIES is very much a celebration of life,

STEFDIESは人生を謳歌しています。

and being in the moment, and celebrating this world

今この瞬間にいること、この世界を祝うこと

that we live in.

Anyone who's sort of doing something different,

I think it's just a heartfelt reaction

心のこもった反応だと思います

to wanting to be included and wanting

to have a seat at the table.

And I feel that sometimes when there's

this whitewashing on social media and on Instagram,

it excludes a lot of people.

And I want to remember my travels.

I want to be in my photos.

I want to make it cool, but I don't

want to feel bad that I'm not doing

it the right way, or the socially accepted way,

or in the beautiful kind of way.

I've been on trips where they were just

concerned with going places where they could

get a picture for social media.

It wasn't behind I want to see this beautiful fountain,

後ろにはありませんでした......この美しい噴水を見てみたい。

or I want to meet these cool local people.

もしくは、地元のかっこいい人たちに会いたい。

It was more like, I have to go to this place

というよりも、ここに行かなくてはいけないという感じでした。

to get the photos so I can show people.

を使って写真を撮って人に見せられるようにします。

I would just walk away and go explore.

私はただ歩いて探検に行くだけです。

And I'd like-- be like, it's been like 30 minutes.

私は...30分も経ってしまった。

Are you going to-- do you want to go up there?

上に行きたいのか？

No, no, no, no, we're done.

いやいや、もう終わりだ。

I'm like, I can't.

って感じで、無理です。

And so there's so much time in trying

試行錯誤している時間が多いので

to get the photo that you don't actually exist in the place

その場所に実際には存在しない写真を手に入れるために

that you're going to.

あなたがすることを

It's just sad because you're missing out

寂しいだけなんだから

on the beautiful place.

美しい場所で

Be in the moment.

今のうちに。

Be there.

そこにいて

I think it's actually deeply ingrained in me

実は自分の中に深く根付いているのではないかと思います。

to learn about other cultures, also

他の文化を学ぶためにも

learn about myself through other cultures and through travel.

異文化や旅を通して自分を知る。

I didn't view the world through just one

世界を一本で見ていたのではなく

lens of being in America.

アメリカにいることのレンズ。

I mean, I also had the culture of my Japanese grandmother

というか、日本の祖母の文化もあって

and my Italian grandfather.

とイタリア人の祖父。

And so when you're surrounded by otherness,

そうやって他の人に囲まれていると

it is just ingrained in you that you're no better or no less

than anyone else.

誰よりも

You're just you.

Expand yourself.

自分を広げていく。

And the best way to expand yourself, I think,

そして、自分自身を広げるための最良の方法だと思います。

is by expanding your mind through experience.
