looks out over the ocean and frowns.

漁師の寺院で 村のシャーマンであるケクソが

It's a still morning– unusually still,

海を見渡しながら眉をひそめています

and the lack of wind is the latest in a series of troubling signs.

いつもの朝とは違い 静まり返っていて

The year is 1400 BCE.

風がないことは 一連の不吉な 予兆のうちで直近のものです

Quexo's village sits in the dusty, treeless desert

紀元前1400年

between the towering Andes and Pacific Ocean.

ケクソの村は 埃っぽく樹木のない砂漠の中にあり

The villagers live off the sea, harvesting reeds,

そびえ立つアンデス山脈と 太平洋に挟まれています

drying them in the sun, and using them to build fishing boats.

村人たちは海で暮らしを立てており

Every day in the summer,

ヨシを刈り 天日干しにし これを使って漁船を造ります

the men set out on these boats to hunt shark and other fish

夏の間は毎日

while the women harvest shellfish and sea urchins.

男性はサメやその他の魚を捕るため 船を出す一方

In winter, storms bring powerful waves, which cross the vast ocean unobstructed

女性は貝やウニなどを採ります

to detonate on these shores.

冬には嵐が巨大な波をもたらし 遮られることもなく 広い海を渡り

Most years, Quexo's village catches more than enough fish.

岸辺でごう音が響きます

But this year, the winds have died and the fish have dwindled.

ケクソの村における 例年の漁獲量は十分すぎるほどあります

Quexo has seen this pattern before:

しかし 今年は風が吹かず 魚の数が減少していました

the fish disappear, then the violent rains arrive,

ケクソは以前に このような光景を 見たことがあります

causing flash floods that dissolve mud bricks and wash away settlements.

魚が消えた後に大雨が降り

He needs to stop the bad weather before the storms come—

鉄砲水が泥のレンガをばらばらにし 集落を流してしまうのです

his only hope is a special ritual he's been planning.

彼は嵐が来る前に 悪天候を止める必要があります

Quexo spends much less time in the ocean than the other villagers.

彼の唯一の望みは 計画していた特別な儀式です

He became a shaman after seeing a sign in the sea one morning—

ケクソは他の村人に比べて海で過ごす時間が 大幅に少ないのです

like his father and grandfather before him.

彼はある朝 父や祖父と同じように

This morning,

海に映し出された印しを見て シャーマンになりました

he walks to the nearby sacred mountain as the sun rises.

今朝は

There, he gathers ceremonial cactus and herbs like “horse tail,”

日が昇ると同時に 近くの霊山まで歩いていきます

“stonebreaker," and valerian, along with the mineral hematite.

そこで彼は 「馬の尾」「石破り」 鹿の子草などの ―

Back in the village, everyone is preparing to leave

儀式用のサボテンやハーブに加え 鉱物であるヘマタイトも集めます

for a religious festival at a large temple inland.

村に戻ると 皆は内陸にある 大きな寺院でのお祭りに向けて

The festival marks the beginning of what is usually the season of abundance,

出発の準備をしています

but with the signs pointing to storms, Quexo isn't feeling too celebratory.

祭りは 通常は豊かな季節の 始まりを示しますが

Whole families travel to the festival, where they camp for a few days.

嵐の予兆がみられるので ケクソはあまり祝う気分ではありません

They've packed seaweed, carved bones, gourd bowls, reed mats,

家族全員が祝祭の場へと旅をし そこで数日間 キャンプで寝泊まりします

and other goods to trade in the market around the temple.

海苔や彫刻を施した骨 ひょうたん鉢 ヨシのマットなどの品を詰めて

Quexo inspects the goods to make sure everything is of the finest quality.

寺院周辺の市場で取引をするのです

He brings the herbs he gathered to trade for cinnabar,

ケクソは すべての品が最高の品質かどうかを 確認しています

a mineral that comes from the highlands in the Andes.

彼は 自ら集めたハーブを 持っていきます

He needs cinnabar for his ritual to ward off the storms.

アンデスの高地で採れる鉱物である 辰砂と交換するためです

Around lunchtime, the sprawling temple rises out of the desert ahead.

彼は嵐を防ぐための儀式に 辰砂を必要としています

People have come from all along the coast and the foothills.

お昼頃になると 前方の砂漠に 左右に広がった寺院が姿を現します

The women handle trade transactions— they're looking for cotton and ceramics.

海岸沿いや山の麓から 人々が集まってきました

Men aren't usually allowed to do the trading,

女性たちは物々交換をする役目を担い 綿と陶器を探しています

but shamans are an exception.

通常 男性が取引をすることは 許されていませんが

Though Quexo is a man, during rituals he becomes half man, half woman,

シャーマンは例外です

and this ambiguity makes his role more flexible outside ceremonies too.

ケクソは男ですが 儀式の間に彼は半男半女になり

Quexo can't find any cinnabar in the market,

この性の曖昧さのおかげで 儀式以外の場でも 彼の役割は より柔軟性なものとなります

so he heads to the main temple,

ケクソは市場に辰砂が見当たらないので

dodging children playing in the plaza.

He puts on his ceremonial garb: red face paint, earrings,

彼は儀式用に身なりを整えます ― 顔に赤い顔料を塗り 耳飾りや

and a necklace of shark's teeth and vertebrae.

サメの歯と椎骨で作られた ネックレスを身につけます

Inside, the ceremonies are already underway,

中ではすでに儀式が行われており

and the shamans have drunk the sacred cactus drink.

シャーマンたちは 神聖なサボテンの飲み物を飲んでいます

Many of them are Quexo's friends from festivals over the years,

シャーマンの多くは長年にわたる祭りで 知り合ったケクソの仲間ですが

but he doesn't see the mountain shamans who would have cinnabar.

辰砂を持っているであろう 高地のシャーマンが見当たりません

He begins to panic.

彼はパニックになります

If the highland shamans don't show up,

高地のシャーマンが現れない場合

his only option will be to make the long walk into the mountains.

彼の唯一の選択肢は 山へと長い道のりを行くことです

It's a dangerous journey that takes five days,

５日間かかる危険な旅であるうえ

precious time he doesn't have to waste.

彼には無駄にはできない貴重な時間です

But perhaps he has no choice.

He refuses the sacred cactus and sets off toward the mountains.

神聖なサボテンの飲み物を断って 山に向かって出発します

As he leaves the settlement behind, he sees a group approaching.

集落を後にするとき 彼は集団が近づいてくるのを見ます

He recognizes them as highlanders by their llamas.

ケクソは彼らが乗っているラマから 高地の人だと認識します

He dashes toward their shaman.

集団のシャーマンに向かって走りだし

Barely pausing to say hello, he offers him hematite, dried seaweed,

挨拶もせずに 彼はヘマタイト 乾燥わかめ

and empty shells to grind up for lime and chew with coca leaves.

それに コカの葉と共に噛む ライムを挽く貝殻を渡します

In return, the other shaman gives him the precious cinnabar.

お返しに 相手側のシャーマンが彼に 貴重な辰砂を渡します

With the key to his ritual in hand,

儀式を執り行うため 必須のものを手にしたケクソは

Quexo heads home to the temple of the fisherman

潮目が一気に変わる希望を抱きながら 漁師たちの寺院へと向かいます

in hopes of turning the tide.
