that you can't take with your camera.

Yet, my interest in photography started

僕が写真に興味を持つようになったのは

as I got my first digital camera

初めてのカメラを手にした

at the age of 15.

15歳のときで それは以前からの

It mixed with my earlier passion for drawing,

絵への情熱と混じり合っていましたが

but it was a bit different,

違いもありました

because using the camera,

カメラで重要なのは

the process was in the planning instead.

構想の段階になります

And when you take a photograph with a camera,

カメラで写真を撮る場合

the process ends when you press the trigger.

シャッターを切った瞬間にプロセスは終わります

So to me it felt like photography was more about

だから写真というのは

being at the right place and the right time.

しかるべき時にしかるべき場所にいるということが大部分で

I felt like anyone could do that.

誰にでもできることに思えたのです

So I wanted to create something different,

僕は何かもっと違ったものを作りたいと思いました

something where the process starts

シャッターを切った瞬間に

when you press the trigger.

プロセスが始まるような何かです

Photos like this:

たとえばこんな写真です

construction going on along a busy road.

往来の激しい通りで工事が行われていますが

But it has an unexpected twist.

予想外の捻りが加えられています

And despite that,

それでいて

it retains a level of realism.

リアルさも依然保たれています

Or photos like these --

あるいはこのような写真

both dark and colorful,

暗いのも色鮮やかなのもありますが

but all with a common goal

共通するのは 一定のリアルさを

of retaining the level of realism.

保っているということです

When I say realism,

僕がリアルと言っているのは

I mean photo-realism.

フォトリアリズム的ということです

Because, of course,

もちろんこのようなものを

it's not something you can capture really,

実際に撮ることはできませんけど

but I always want it to look like it could have been captured somehow

何か本当にカメラで撮ったような感じを出したいと

as a photograph.

いつも思っています

Photos where you will need a brief moment to think

仕掛けに気づくのに 一瞬

to figure out the trick.

考えなければならないような写真です

So it's more about capturing an idea

だから瞬間を切り取るというよりは

than about capturing a moment really.

アイデアを切り取るというのに近いでしょう

But what's the trick

では これをリアルに

that makes it look realistic?

見せているものは何でしょう？

Is it something about the details

ディテールでしょうか

or the colors?

色でしょうか

Is it something about the light?

それとも光でしょうか？

What creates the illusion?

何がイリュージョンを生み出しているのでしょう？

Sometimes the perspective is the illusion.

見え方がイリュージョンということもあります

But in the end, it comes down to how we interpret the world

つまるところ 僕たちが世界をどう解釈し

and how it can be realized on a two-dimensional surface.

二次元平面上でどう表現できるかということにかかっているのです

It's not really what is realistic,

何がリアルかというよりは

it's what we think looks realistic really.

何がリアルに見えるか というのがポイントなんです

So I think the basics

基本は

are quite simple.

ごく単純です

I just see it as a puzzle of reality

現実の別々な断片を組み合わせて

where you can take different pieces of reality and put it together

新たな現実を作り出す—

to create alternate reality.

パズルのようなものです

And let me show you a simple example.

簡単な例をお見せしましょう

Here we have three perfectly imaginable physical objects,

ここに想像上の物体が３つあります

something we all can relate to living in a three-dimensional world.

三次元世界の物として捉えることができます

But combined in a certain way,

しかしある種の組み合わせ方をすると

they can create something that still looks three-dimensional,

依然 三次元的に—

like it could exist.

ありえそうに見えながら

But at the same time, we know it can't.

存在しえないものができます

So we trick our brains,

脳が騙されるのです

because our brain simply doesn't accept the fact

脳はそれが意味をなさないという事実を

that it doesn't really make sense.

受け入れようとしないからです

And I see the same process

写真を組み合わせるときにも

with combining photographs.

この現象を利用します

It's just really about combining different realities.

異なる現実の組み合わせ方が大事なんです

So the things that make a photograph look realistic,

写真をリアルに見せるのは

I think it's the things that we don't even think about,

僕たちが意識さえしないもの

the things all around us in our daily lives.

身の回りにある日常的なものです

But when combining photographs,

写真を組み合わせるときには

this is really important to consider,

これをよく考える必要があります

because otherwise it just looks wrong somehow.

そうしないと どこか変に見えてしまうからです

So I would like to say that there are three simple rules to follow

リアルな結果が得られるためのシンプルなルールが

to achieve a realistic result.

３つあると思います

As you can see, these images aren't really special.

これらの画像には特別なところは何もありません

But combined, they can create something like this.

しかし組み合わせると このようなものができます

So the first rule is that photos combined

第一のルールは 組み合わせる写真は

should have the same perspective.

同じ視点でなければならないということ

Secondly, photos combined

第二に 組み合わせる写真は

should have the same type of light.

光の条件が同じである必要があります

And these two images both fulfill these two requirements --

この２枚の写真は どちらの条件も充たしています

shot at the same height and in the same type of light.

同じ高さから撮られ 光の条件も同じです

The third one is about making it impossible to distinguish

第三のルールは 別な画像が

where the different images begin and end

どこから始まるのか分からないよう

by making it seamless.

継ぎ目をなくすということです

Make it impossible to say

画像がどう組み合わされたのか

how the image actually was composed.

分からなくするのです

So by matching color, contrast and brightness

色とコントラストと明るさを

in the borders between the different images,

異なる写真の境界部分で合わせて

adding photographic defects

被写界深度や彩度などを

like depth of field,

落としたり

desaturated colors and noise,

ノイズを入れるなど

we erase the borders between the different images

写真に効果を加え画像の間の境界を消して

and make it look like one single image,

実際には何百ものレイヤがあっても

despite the fact that one image

１枚の写真であるかのように

can contain hundreds of layers basically.

見せかけるのです

So here's another example.

これは別な例です

One might think that this is just an image of a landscape

ただの風景写真の下の方の部分を

and the lower part is what's manipulated.

加工したように見えますが

But this image is actually entirely composed

実際には別な場所で撮った

of photographs from different locations.

たくさんの写真から構成されています

I personally think that it's easier to actually create a place

場所を探し出すよりも 作り出してしまう方が

than to find a place,

簡単だと思います

because then you don't need to compromise

その方が頭の中のアイデアを

with the ideas in your head.

そのまま実現できますから

But it does require a lot of planning.

でもよく構想する必要があります

And getting this idea during winter,

このアイデアは冬に思いついたんですが

I knew that I had several months to plan it,

パズルのピースとなる場所を

to find the different locations

見つけるために

for the pieces of the puzzle basically.

何ヶ月も検討しました

So for example,

たとえば

the fish was captured on a fishing trip.

この魚は釣り旅行で捕まえたものです

The shores are from a different location.

岸辺は別な場所で撮りました

The underwater part was captured in a stone pit.

水中の部分は石切場です

And yeah, I even turned the house on top of the island red

そして島の上の家を赤くして

to make it look more Swedish.

スウェーデンっぽくしました

So to achieve a realistic result,

リアルな結果を得るためには

I think it comes down to planning.

構想が重要ということです

It always starts with a sketch, an idea.

僕はいつもアイデアのスケッチから始めます

Then it's about combining the different photographs.

それから別の写真を組み合わせます

And here every piece is very well planned.

それぞれのパーツは とてもしっかり構想されています

And if you do a good job capturing the photos,

写真の撮影がうまくいけば

the result can be quite beautiful

結果はとても素晴らしく

and also quite realistic.

すごくリアルなものになります

So all the tools are out there,

必要な道具はすべて揃っており

and the only thing that limits us

できることを制限するのは

is our imagination.

自分自身の想像力だけです
