where we can talk one on one with a master craftsman

そこでマスター職人さんと話しができると思います

who is hand-making kendo armour

剣道の防具を手作りしている方です

Which I am really looking forward to, it sounds super interesting

すごく面白そうでめっちゃ楽しみにしている！

So let's get started on the lessons!

All right, it's time to put on our kendo wear

それでは剣道着を着てみましょう

Ok so kneel with my left leg down first

All the staff that helped me out were super friendly

Usually this thing is smaller

だいたいここの部分はもっと小さいです

Oh smaller? So it'll stop down here?

This part is about a cm smaller so it's easier for them

ここの部分は数センチ小さいですのでつけやすくなります

And then you make a triangle

Modern kendo it's flat

But traditionally, it's like this

でも昔は、こんな感じでした

Kind of rounded

ちょっと丸く？

Yeah! The reason is that you're supposed to put your nose right there

はい！理由はこの手の間に鼻を入れるためでした

Oh really?

本当ですか？

So if somebody actually steps on your head when you're bowing

もしお辞儀している時に頭が踏まれたら

So you can protect your nose from being hurt

鼻を守ることができました

Why would somebody step on your head when you're bowing?

まぁ、そうですね...

It used to be a samurai culture, with the lord and everything

昔の侍時代にですね、大名などがいて

The lord would come by and hit you

大名に叩かれることがありましたね

So they would come by and smack you?

なるほど！誰かに打たれる時ね

When you're bowing and they would smack you from the top

そう！お辞儀している時に上から打たれることがあったからです

Remember to leave that nose gap, very important

とても大事です！鼻の隙間を作らないと！

From here the left side, make an L

Okay. Then twist again, on the balls of your feet

それでは足のボールに乗ってもう一度ねじってください

I forget what these are called but they're some kind of pepper and I friggen love them

Where they're hand-making the kendo armour

剣道の防具を手作りしているところです

Let's go inside and check it out!

中に入って見てみましょう！

This bamboo, and this side is leather

内は竹、外は皮です

So when you come inside the kendo armour studio here

この剣道防具スタジオに来たら

they're going to teach you about the really old armour that they used to use, which is super neat

昔使われていた防具などについて、いろいろ教えてもらえます

You don't get to see these kind of things on a regular basis

最近、昔の手作り防具は中々見れないです

This is a traditional armour piece called a dō

こちらは防具の一部、「胴」と言います

Goes on your abdomen area here

お腹を守るためです

This is a really old one, they used to make it out of slabs of bamboo, like this

これはすごく古いもので、竹で作られていて

and sew them together

縫ってあります

And then it evolved over the years

長年にわたって進化しました

This is one a little more down the line

これは少し下のラインです

It's got the bamboo on the inside here and then a layer of leather on the outside

竹が内側に入っていて、外側は皮の僧で

to hold it all together

全部一つになっている

They say that this one really hurts

こちらはすごく痛かったそうです

You don't really want armour that still hurts

痛いとつけたくなくなるね

But nowadays

でも、最近

It's made from mostly plastic

ほとんどプラスチックで作られていて

and it looks a lot different

見た目もちょっと変わりました

So they've just passed me over a really fancy dō here

こちらはすごく素敵な胴ですね

This is Japanese lacquer

これは日本の漆です

How much would one of these go for?

いくらになりますか？

It's about $3000 USD

だいたい30万円ですね

Just for this one part!

Incense, do you know incense?

本当に昔ながら、伝統を守って防具を作っていますね

They would burn incense inside their helmet before battle

マスター職人さんが働いているところを見ることができる

This is how they would show the individuality of their personalities and armour

こんな体験は中々できないでしょう？！

Even nowadays that is still continuing

90%の剣道防具は海外で作られていると聞いたので

With fancy armour like this

日本で手作りされているものを見るのは本当におもしろいです

It's been really interesting so far

本当に珍しいのでこんな体験ができてすごく嬉しいです！

You get a chance to look around the factory they have here

ここで私達の剣道体験が終わります

And seeing all the old equipment is really neat

So to find somebody who is making it here, by hand, in Japan is really neat
